If you have an old phenom chances are you'll be needing a new mobo and ram. If you plan on spending $500 for everything then I'd get an i5 skylake processor if you can. I feel like I'm seeing Haswell processors being recommended more than Skylake ones, are they enough of a jump to be worth getting new ram for? The jump from the 6600 to the 6600k is like $60+ from most places, and then you also need the CPU cooler. Does pushing the clock speed really justify that extra $100 or so with performance?
If you really wanna upgrade something, would recommend in order of priority 1) SSD (highly recommend) 2) GPU (meh, depends on usage, should be fine for most things already) 3) RAM (buy another 8GB if you really want to spend money for not much) honestly, the build is fine
I don't have an SSD and don't know much about them but i want to get one for around 100 bucks. Is a samsung 850 evo 250gb for $110 canadian a good deal?

PC up and running thanks to my brother-in-law. Thanks for all your help too.
so a while back i asked about getting a good upgrade for this pre-built computer for games and stuff. these two parts were recommended to me, but i'm also wondering if you could recommend any good motherboards that support usb 3.0 for this rig as well
Can someone recommend a good GTX 980 TI model? I plan to get two for SLI, I preferably would like a model that doesn't require a lot of work on my part to overclock/set up, if that's possible.
Or MSI TF
if you can get one
They're in stock at Amazon, Newegg, NCIXUS, B&H, and SuperBiiz?
not in new zealand ayyyyyyy
Is anything really in stock in The Shire though?
I'm sure they got plenty micro itx

what's the laziest way to get my computer on my carpet. I have my power supply fan facing downward I'm too lazy to get a slab of wood. I might tomorrow though I dunno what's the best way to get it on the carpet without it being on the carpet, if that makes sense. Perfect world I don't have to buy a thing [editline]19th December 2015[/editline] will a piece of cardboard do
So I've narrowed down my choices for the 980 TI cards to these two. The EVGA one is moderately more expensive (and I'm going for SLI to it'll be two of those cards), but it's water-cooled, but is it worth it over the MSI one? Are there any benchmarks of the two cards, because I can't seem to find any.

It doesn't mention 2 way SLI but it probably means up to quad. not sure though. Either way I'd get the EVGA. I'd take EVGA over MSI imo.
So.. About the ssd
850 evo if you can afford it
Personally I wouldn't take a non classified EVGA over an MSI TF. Though honestly I don't know what the hybrid board looks like, but I'd guess its not a classified one. The stock max OC for the MSI is higher too.

If you have a spare slot http://www.amazon.com/Anker%C2%AE-Express-Connector-Desktops-Chipset/dp/B005ARQV6U
Have any of you ever built a home theater computer? Like a computer that hooks up to the TV and can play Blu-Ray and CDs? I'd just need a good case, a tiny mobo, an i3, a tiny HDD, an okay GPU and some optical drives, right? [editline]20th December 2015[/editline] and like 2GB RAM of course
Excellent, considering my TV isn't even 4k lol
Any blu-ray drive you buy should support DVD and CD, so you shouldn't have to worry about that. I would totally grab storage to rip stuff to, though. Blu-Ray playback on the fly still isn't perfect from what I understand and CDs are lame. Import it all into XBMC/Plex/Emby and go nuts. Older refurbished GPUs can be had for super cheap now if you need that stuff. 7XXX series and stuff. [editline]20th December 2015[/editline] Oh, well then whatever integrated graphics will be fine for 1080p.

And the halting has nothing to do with usb 2.0. There is probably something else going on here.
I'm in need of a PC upgrade since my house was struck by lightning and fried my motherboard (Surge blew right through my surge protector and turned my PC on. After powering it down it wouldn't power back up. PSU is fine though when I jumper the 24-pin connector). I figured I'd look at it like my Jeep: Something breaking means time to upgrade, especially from an i5-2500k. No budget really to be honest, I just don't want overkill for what I'm doing. It will be primarily used for gaming. Since I have a few reusable parts I'm going to build in two stages. I'm able to salvage: Case (Though I want a new one, which will be the last thing to buy), PSU, SSD's/HDD's, and *hopefully* my GTX 970 (If not I have an older GPU I will use for a few weeks before purchasing a new GPU). I have no issue with using the Skylake series since this PC will probably remain untouched (Unless another friggin lightning strike hits my house) for 4-5 years. The first things I want to buy are a CPU, motherboard, and RAM. I've put together the below list. I'm aiming to buy the CPU this week as the 6600k is on sale for $210 at Microcenter. If I do end up having to buy a new GPU, what would be the best? Should I go with a 980 or will another 970 suffice? Thanks in advance!
First off, surge protectors usually come with a warranty. So you might be able to claim the upgrade from them. The i5-2500K is still very valid, especially with an overclock. It should still run almost anything at max. CPU performance hasn’t really gone up all that much since the i5-2### series. But if you have the money and you are sure the MOBO is borked, go for it. Your PSU could still be broken btw, the fact that it powers on doesn’t mean it isn’t broken. Can you test it somewhere?

I never had any issue with using my 2500k and ultra graphics. It worked wonderfully with my 970. The motherboard is definitely shorted somewhere. PSU won't power up when the 24pin connector is hooked up to the motherboard. I could take it to work and have our technicians try and find the problem, but I wanted to upgrade my CPU and motherboard with my tax return anyway. My friend's selling me his lightly used EVGA SuperNova 650 G2 for $50. I'm going to buy that which is better than my older Corsair CX600. And I want a modular PSU for cable management.

(using arctic silver paste and HAF 912 case). Performance is really good too, I shouldn't need to upgrade for a LONG time.

I don't currently have any plans to overclock but it may come up in the future, so I wouldn't mind a z170 chipset. I think the motherboard I picked out will do me well, but I wouldn't mind a second opinion.
