Very quick question: Those network extenders that claim to use your home wiring to extend your network, do those actually work?
I have my router in my basement and a netgear extender on the first floor. My computer is on the second floor but still has trouble getting great speed. Would something like this actually work to fix my speeds? By plugging it into a wall and using a small Ethernet to connect it or does it just work as a wireless adapter?
[editline]23rd December 2015[/editline]
ah nevermind, those things require a plug in both the router and the socket.
Quick question, when I hook up my case fans I connect the MOLEX plug to my PSU and then plug the 4 pin connector on that wire (comming from the PSU) into the case fan pins on the motherboard? I don't want to plug something into something where they shouldn't go.
My dad solved my video problem. I installed the GPU and was trying to use the motherboard DVI port like a big dumb idiot.

If you have fan ports on your mobo you should connect them to that, else you cannot control their speed.
I was wondering why you used the motherboard DVI port anyway.

The fans only have a MOLEX connector, nothing to connect to the motherboard.

Assuming you haven't bought additional fans, you can just plug the fan connector straight into the mobo's fan headers which allow the bios to control your case fans instead of having them run at max speed. Any extra fans that don't have a spot to use on the mobo connect to a molex adapter that plugs into the psu. This'll run the fans at max speed though so you might wanna get a fan splitter if your mobo doesn't have enough fan headers unless you don't mind the noise.
Hey everyone, I'm making some upgrades to my computer and need some advice.
It's a used Dell machine I got for cheap; here's the overview.

I'm looking to upgrade the RAM and graphics card, and I'm hoping to spend around $100-120 total (not a hard limit). Right now it can hardly run any games. I'm not looking to play new games at top settings or anything, but relatively undemanding games at a reasonable FPS (Civ V, Dota 2, KOTOR, XCOM EU). My resolution is pretty low as you can see, so that should help, though I may upgrade to 1920x1080 in the future if I can find a monitor for cheap. I'm also hoping that some better RAM will make the computer a bit snappier, even outside of games; it can slow down a lot when multiple programs are running.
The PSU is 255W, so that's a concern. I've done some cursory research, and I'm considering this graphics card. Still looking into RAM. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Are you sure there isnt a molex to fan plug cable connected to the fans?

Dell machines notoriously difficult to upgrade.
I also think you dont really need more ram.
You do need a better PSU if you are going to plug in any GPU. If that is even possible in that build.
Can you link the exact model of your pc?

Given that I have a 255W PSU it's the desktop version. From the research I've done it seems the motherboard would accept DDR3 RAM, and I might be able to manage with the current PSU and a low-power card. Currently I'm considering the R7 250, GTX 730, or perhaps the 750Ti for a bit more.
I was bored so I threw together a completely ground-up budget 1080p build.

As a Xmas present to myself I want to rebuild my PC. I already have a case, hard drives and gfx card that I'm fine with reusing. I thought I was going to be able to reuse my RAM for the time being until I saw DDR4....shows you when I last did a major overhaul of my PC. I'm thinking $500 or so for motherboard, cpu and RAM. I'd rather stick more money into the mobo and cpu because I can always add RAM down the road easily enough.

If you're not planning on overclocking this'd be a great choice.

Yeah I'm not big on overclocking. Always afraid I'm gonna break something and don't really care enough to learn the ins and outs. And how many normal sata ports does it have? I'm kind of confused. Also are any of the 8 core cpus of a decent price or are they all still crazy priced?
4 sata ports. 8 cores are around a grand plus a lot more expensive motherboard for them.
how much would one have to spend to make a nice facebook machine
how much would one have to spend to make a nice facebook machine
Facebook machine? That's going to be about a thousand bucks, easily.
Serious answer: About $350. You can get a fairly decent PC that can play a few modern games and handle the basic stuff pretty cheaply. If you really wanted to cheap out, you could even pick up a Google Chromebook for $150 or so and just keep an HDMI cable around.
That's assuming you want to actually do stuff with your computer. If we're talking strictly internet browsing, YouTube videos and the like, $50 should get you everything you need for a Raspberry Pi setup aside from the monitor.
Wouldn't a raspberry pi do facebook fine?
Wouldn't a raspberry pi do facebook fine?
Playing videos and shit is still pretty rough on a pi 2.
4 sata ports. 8 cores are around a grand plus a lot more expensive motherboard for them.
So quad core is still the best for a reasonable price then?
Yeah. And really the only necessary level for gaming.
Would you be able to tell me which motherboard you're using? I don't currently have any plans to overclock but it may come up in the future, so I wouldn't mind a z170 chipset. I think the motherboard I picked out will do me well, but I wouldn't mind a second opinion.
Sorry for the late reply. I got the Asus Z170-P which is part of the z170 chipset. There are lower end and higher end versions of this motherboard that offer DDR3 or more SATA ports etc. This one was DDR4 and has everything I needed really, price was within my budget. The one you listed looks good.
I'm still not entirely sure what the budget will be, i'll find out soon enough and that's when i might change on certain things to keep the costs down a little. Safe to say i can see this being roughly a grand but if it future proofs me for a couple of good years, then that's cool.

Still need to talk to certain people about this build again but people have been busy.
If required, i can change the processor back to the I5-4690K, the reason why i thought on
the Intel Core i7-6700K is for the future.
I might change the SSD to what was mentioned to me before, although i can't remember for the life of me what it was called.
Decided to stick with the 970 because that's been recommended by the people i know, it seems like a safe enough bet compaired to the Radeon R9 390.
I'm not entirely sure about the power supply, would the Corsair CX 600W be more than enough if i decide to upgrade in the future or was i better off with the EVGA SuperNOVA GS 550W in the first build?
Should i change the Motherboard to from Asus MAXIMUS VIII HERO ATX LGA1151 to the Z170A or something else?
Is there a recommended case or am i good with what i got? (Corsair Carbide Series 300R)

If you are on a budget, just get an i5-4690K and matching mobo, its fine for everything.
The 6700K is only a tiny bit faster but costs a shitload more.
Also get a better PSU. (Seasonic m12/s12)
The SSD is fine, but the BX200 would also do. Its cheaper for almost the same performance.
The MOBO is very expensive without a real reason.
I would get the R9-390 instead of the Nvidia 970. It has more vram, performs better at High res and better at the soon to come DX12 games. (And this is coming from an 970 owner)
In my last post, it included this monitor, but I think that's pushing it. I'm looking for a decent monitor with 2560x1440 with at least 60hz, I'm not sure how response time affects it so I'm unsure about which one to get.
So I'm looking to upgrade my CPU, and I have a few questions.
Currently, my setup is the MSI 760GM-P23 (FX) motherboard and the AMD FX-4170 processor.
The CPU, as far as I can tell, just isn't cutting it anymore in most games - I constantly get ten-second long lagspikes, usually lowering the FPS to 10FPS and then it springs back to normal as if nothing had happened. I doubt it's the GPU as it's easily the newest part of the entire system (GTX 970) and the HDD is only a year old (with 300~GB free). RAM is also fine. So yeah, the only thing I can think that's causing me issues is the CPU.
So what would be a good replacement for it?
Random lagspikes sounds more like something other than your games are using a lot of CPU in the background rather than a bad CPU. Try using something like HW-Info to take a log of your RAM/CPU/Disk usage while you play games, then look to see where there are large spikes.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211768 can anyone find this cheaper anywhere?
[editline]24th December 2015[/editline]
Maybeee an NZXT or Fractal.
Right, i've done some fuckery with the build and after speaking to certain people in my group, i've decided to scavenge my GTX 660 and continue using that on this new build just for the time being, until i get the money to buy a 970 and i'm fairly sure i can survive without the SSD for the time being. I've figured out that the 970 is slightly longer than the 660 there won't be any issues with fitting the thing.
With holding back on the 970, i can concentrate on buying the I7 Skylake and future proofing myself... plus it makes negotiating this bloody thing more easier.
http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/bHFfqs
Is there anything in this build that i need to be alerted about or is everything in order?

I've discovered that when the lagspike occurs, my motherboard "says" that my CPU temp skyrockets to 255C. I strongly doubt it does that in the space of a second, so it's probably my motherboard, not my CPU.
By chance, do you let Windows index you files? I used to have a similar situation which stopped when I disabled the "Windows Search" and "Superfetch" services, the downside is that your Windows searches will be considerably slower (unless you're using an SSD). I also noticed better overall performance aside from playing games, so imho it's worth it to disable them, but it depends on what you think is best.
