Also a 750Ti and the AMD 6950 are almost exactly on the same performance lvl, so I guess it wasn’t much of an upgrade?
when i say replaced, I mean the 6950 exploded one day and i bought a 750ti to replace it, couldn't really afford anything better at the time.
thanks for the help, not sure how i managed to overlook that...
You say driver screw-ups are mostly gone, but Just Cause 3 had a major issue (still does, I believe) where people using AMD cards just get terrible hangups and stuttering. There are still games that do not behave well with AMD, we shouldn't downplay that.
Sure, and Nvidia had massive issue's with audio over HDMI in windows 10 in one of their drivers. And the august update caused WOW to crash for a big part of the users. And also issues with extremely low performance in Tomb Raider. However, they all fixed this fast.
And AMD had issue's with The Witcher 3, Hairworks and issue's with the New crimson driver package. Also fixed really fast.
The change is that 3 years + ago AMD would not release fixes as fast as Nvidia did. And AMD still has worse drivers on Linux.
Nvidia also seems to purposely use their influence to get code into games that doesn't work well on AMD gpu's. An example of this is the massive heavily tessellated sea's under Crysis 2/3 levels which only purpose seemed to be, to decrease performance on AMD gpu's. As it is invisible.

Disclaimer: I have a Nvidia 970.
You can't say too many bad things about AMD with TW3 when any Kepler and earlier card had just as bad issues.
So I bit the bullet and bought this just now

I can't wait to see how it performs :freakout:

Ow yeah thats true! Nvidia even nerfed their own older generation of cards with their new tech.
Okay so the special offer ran out and the computer became too expensive (over 1100 euros) so we had to downgrade a bit with my brother... We decided to go with i5-6500 (no OC) and another motherboard. How does the build look like now? And if there's somewhere to save a bit, let me know. We will be buying from this website, so the prices are from there.

And what do all those things on the memory mean? XMP, LPX etc.?

It drops useless motherboard features and a tiny bit of cpu power in exchange for a much better GPU and a large SSD. It will perform alot better in games.
If you want you can also drop it down to a 250-120GB SSD and get a seperate HDD.
Quick question about Windows - if I upgrade my laptop to Windows 10, could I use my old Windows 8 key on the new build?

there is no cable management... take advantage of those cable access holes to take care of some of that mess. (hard to tell from pictures exactly how much room you have for cable management)
also your power supply is upside down. (the internal fan on the psu should be facing down where the psu fan intake is, that way it's not sucking up hot air)

I didn't find some of those parts from the site I mentioned, and the ones I found had a bit bigger prices. Memory seems to be DDR3, and in our original builds it's DDR4... how big is the difference and does going for DDR3 mobo limit future upgrade possibilities? This build is meant to be a long-time computer that'll just be upgraded a little bit every now and then :P

The power supply position confused me for some reason. The power cable seems to be going in the correct way up (smallest flat end on top). I'll probably get round to flipping it round but I'm tired as fuck now and it's working just fine. There's a dust filter thing at the bottom of it and there's definitely air coming out.
I tried to use the access holes but the case isn't great for cable management, the only actual holes are the ones that you can see on the right going to the hard drives at the back.

Euhh nope its ddr4? The ddr 3 is named almost the same. One sec il Cross reference with your site
Which parts can you not find?
Apart from the PSU orientation and lack of using those cables holes, it's not toooo bad even if you aren't using them :v:

Oh I installed my graphics card, then realized that the HD Audio connector came out somehow (must not have been put in properly first time). Couldn't reach it properly with tiny gap so moved slots.

Yeah, 1100€ is absolutely over budget (~900€). Is 430W PSU really enough? And what about the RAM, I've heard 2x4gb is better than 1x8gb, am I wrong?
EDIT: Also, i5-6500 is 14€ more than i5-6400... Why 6400 over 6500 when the price diff is so small?
-Yeah the 430Watt is enough. If its an High quality unit (which it is)
-You are correct, 2x4GB is slightly better. However this is barely noticeable(like only very specific benchmark see it) and 1 stick is cheaper.
Im also convinced that 16GB is going to be the norm soon in which case you can just add another 8gb stick.
- The 6500 benches around 5% faster than the 6400 in CPU heavy tasks. However in games this is probably even less (No good benchmarks yet). I dont think its really worth it, but if you have money leftover after dropping to a 380x you might as well.

Okay, 430W just sounds a bit scary, and most of the GPUs recommend at least 500W... Is there a good, not too pricey choice of 500W PSU? Like this or this?. It would be nice that when upgrading, the first thing to change wouldn't be the PSU :D
There also wasn't a 380X available from msi, only from xfx, asus and gigabyte. And what about that GTX960, which my brother has been looking for, is it a total no-no? It's 30 euros cheaper than 380x.
You have a good point with that memory, my brother will propably buy another 8gb later on...
We downgraded the SSD to 120gb, it will be enough to store the OS and maybe a game or two, and that's enough for now.

A 430w quality power supply is completely fine. Most GPU's recommend a 500w because they assume you don't know shit and bought the cheapest raidmax you could find.
I think I'm going to switch laptops. I have a spare one that's better than the one I'm using, so I was just going to swap out the hard drives. Is there anything I need to change with regards to drivers, since they'll have different hardware? or will automatic updates automatically download the ones I need for the different hardware and just not use the ones already installed?
Hard drives don't need different drivers, they all use the same ones (unless you're referring to SSD's which usually have infrequent firmware updates).
I dont mean for the hard drive itself, I meant for the hardware in the other laptop, which has a different processor/mobo etc
Ah, then Windows Update should handle the basic drivers for optimal functioning, but you're better off manually updating them once you switch the drives.
Flip a coin. It might work fine but it might not. What are the specs and brand of both?
one is a lenovo ideapad with an i7 and a GTX 660, and the other is an HP laptop with a lower-end AMD CPU and integrated graphics. I'm switching to the HP because the lenovo is pretty beat up and has a lot of things wrong with it.
It's unlikely that the the install will carry though. Different chipset, graphics vendor, and likely many other driver differences.
but theoretically, the only thing I would have to worry about is drivers. All I need to know is whether automatic updates would take care of that or if I would have to disable all the old drivers and manually install new ones to avoid software/hardware issues.

The issue is more that it probably won't boot so Windows Update can't help you. Last time I swapped a chipset Windows just blue screened before it got to the log on screen. Install disk might help you, might not.

I would just wipe the drive upon switching them out and then do a fresh windows install.

Like Levelog said, 430 is fine as long as its a quality unit.
Youd be surprised how many shitty "600" watt power supply's there are that actually deliver 300Watt with horrible ripple currents to boot. Thats why manifacturers play it safe.
The XFX TS is a very good unit however, and probably delivers more than 430 watt.
The 380x is around 10-15% faster than the 960. So worth the money in my opinion. Even the 380 is 2-5% faster.
For the 380x, the MSI has the coolest and most quiet cooler. After that its the sapphire card which is the cheapest 380x on your site. I would get that then.
