You sure a 1000£ build wouldnt do? I mean this is gonna be outperformed in 4 years by a new 1000£ build anyway.

It looks like he's building a solid workstation. If he's got the money then this build is fine and will last him a very long time. No need to try and convince him otherwise.
Anyone got a recommendation for a decent 24 inch monitor. It's monitor #2, pretty much just for skype/youtube/other work stuff, so it doesn't have to be anywhere near amazing. HDMI preferred
You get a BenQ GL2460HM.
He get's one. YOU ALL GET ONE.
Cause their so damn cheap.
Just curious, what makes this stand out from the rest? It's the same price as a regular 24 inch thin-bezel IPS monitor.
Yet to hear a single bad thing about BenQ.
If IPS is something he needs then yeah there's going to be an alternative at the same price.
My BenQ monitor takes 7 seconds to turn on. I don't know if that's actually a long time comparatively but it sure does feel like a long time.

My Acer 1440p takes about that long too.
My Monoprice 1440p monitor is especially bad about that. It takes about 5 seconds to start the backlight, which includes anytime you switch the resolution (it also clicks, like a relay, which is an odd design choice even for a cheap monitor :v:). Luckily, GPU scaling is a thing.
OKay, I need some help. I got this hard drive as a replacement for my desktop pc (whose hard drive is no longer working) and I'm trying to install Windows 10 on it via a USB stick. When I get to the page where I select which drive to put the OS on, it tells me "we couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the setup log files". I tried the solution here but no luck. I'm pissed because I already waited a few days longer than it was supposed to take to get here. Anyone know how to fix this?

Even at that price point, i wouldn't blow that much money on storage(speed). Performance difference for general use isn't nearly as impressive going from SSD to a PCI-SSD, vs going from HD to SSD.
Edit: i guess you want the massive amount of SSD storage, for virtual machines tho, i guess that kinda justifies it.

But will it actually float? Incase you want to take it into the pool or the tub.
Looks like I'm in for a busy afternoon  I'll report back in a while

Hello I have what is probably the world's jankiest build.
Board+basic kit + ssd: NUC6i5SYK
GCard: MSI GeForce GTX 950 DirectX 12 GTX 950 2GD5 OC
PSU:picoPSU-160-XT
Extra Ram stick:CORSAIR Vengeance 4GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600
It also needs a PCIEmini-PCIE cable
The weird layout is because I am trying to fit this into a very VERY small case with a total square clearance of 189x195x76 mm. And surprisingly, it fits!

Yes the graphics card has been inserted at an angle. The 'case fan' is a giant pc casefan strapped to the top.
As for power, I'm taking the atx pinout of the psu and using the 12 volt pinout for the card and stringing the 12, -12, and 5 volt pinout to get the right voltage for the board. As for power consumption the PSU provides enough with 20 to spare in case either of their peak consumption is exceeded somehow.
I need to revise this a bit before I can actually make it in case I've forgotten something, and I'd appreciate your input.

Interested to see what those fans look like, (I wouldn't have gone for red and black but was thinking of getting the same model)

You probably want to grab the model that has both an M2 and an SATA3 port, or you'll have to run your OS off USB or SD Card.
You'll need this, http://www.hwtools.net/ExtenderBoard/P4SM2.html as well as a PCI-E 4x flex cable.
I would probably just opt to get an tiny steam-machine-ish box. Surely there is one that fits within that space with a decent GPU.
Just ordered all my parts from Amazon for $940 (tax included, shipping was free). I decided not to deal with multiple retailers, shipping, rebates, etc. Since internet sales in my state are taxed automatically, I paid about $60 over the lowest possible price.
Should all be here by the end of the month. I'm excited. It'll be good to get back onto a working desktop again.

The great thing about these fans is that you can swap the colour ring with the blue or white versions included. So I had no problem with color-matching this build :joy:

Huh. Apparently I overran the limit on my debit card. Despite having more than enough money to make all these purchases. Guess I've got to call the bank tomorrow.

If you got it when you were a student it might still have an arbitrary limit of like $400 a day.
If you got it when you were a student it might still have an arbitrary limit of like $400 a day.
Nah, I paid off a $1400 credit card balance at midnight today, so it's probably a $1500-1600 limit.
On the upside, I now don't have a credit card payment. Go me.
Almost everything is in the case!

Turns out I'm one SATA cable short (I need one for the disc drive), plus my plans to get a copy of Windows have hit a bit of a snag. Well, otherwise everything is working out well. Guess I'll deal with everything else in the morning.
Cable management was going really well until I had to plug in the power cables, lol. I'm glad I sprung for the modular PSU or else things would be really ugly.
Re-route everything through those grommets that you have. You have plenty of room to shove everything in the front of the case and to route it all through those grommets.
Will do.
Does it matter where I plug it into the PSU? For example - I only have one graphics card, does it have to be in VGA1 or is VGA2 okay?
Also your cooler is mounted in a really weird way.
Mount it with the fan in take going in from the right and out to the left so your rear fan picks up the air and pushes it out straight away.
Because of the way the cooler connects to the motherboard (it latches onto side clamps, sort of like this) I can't mount it like that. I can rotate it 180 degrees - would that be better or is it not worth the effort?
Oh I assumed you went with your Intel idea.
Huh.
Aight, mount it the other way then, have the warm/hot air rise up since that's what it naturally does anyway.
If you have a top fan or plan to get one it would REALLY benefit from having this.
And no it does not matter as long as they fit(apart from the CPU 8pin that ACTUALLY DOES MATTER).
A buddy of mine gave me his barely used AMD chip for $20 so I adjusted the build accordingly. Looks like I'll be picking up some thermal paste tomorrow too.

This. Discovered my cooler wouldn't go front-to-back like i was planning, but after adding a few fans to the top, it's actually cooling really well for a 9590. And I think my airflow works better this way, since my case doesn't have a front fan.

Ignore the fan wires, those are temporary until I figure out a clean solution for the fan controls. And no, I cannot just hook them up to the motherboard, my second system fan pins are at the bottom of the motherboard, so one of my fans just can't reach. I'm thinking of taking a 5.25" plate off the front and cutting a hole for both fan controller panels.
Hey guys Im building a pc for my couson(hes going to help and im going to teach) looking for opinions if this is any good pick or some changes needed. Yes it has to be skylake and cpu had to be best one without OC option beceuse he plays alot of mmo's.
cpu : Intel Core i5-6600 / 3.3 GHz - € 242,90
psu : XFX TS Series 550W - € 66,90
case : NZXT s340 - € 69.99
ram : DDR4 Corsair Vengeance LPX 8gbx2 16gb - € 93,90

Budget is around 1300-1350(excluding monitor) I still need a gpu with this build but I told him to wait for nvidia pascal cards in meanwhile he can borrow my gtx780. Ive taken into a account a gpu would cost 350-400 euro (price of a 970)
That's a very fucking sick deal.

It was really nice of him, I guess he just had an extra because he builds a lot of PCs.
$20 is $20, plus it let me shift my budget around a bit because I was saving money
