Also it should be noted that the mid-high end Gigabyte Z97x series actually has great power delivery. They've got full digital IR3563B's. Their lower end boards, and even the lower end x series like the Z97x Gaming 3 are the ones that have those issues. As far as haswell goes they're really only matched by the high end ASUS boards and only outclassed by the Z87 MSI XPower and MPower. The Asrock SOC force also has better parts, but less true phases.
No, model for model mATX boards usually have vastly inferior VRM's. For example the Gigabyte Z97x Gaming 5 has an 8 phase VRM setup. The mATX Z97x Gaming 5 version has 4. This is the same for pretty much any full size to micro conversion of the same model name. There are very few mATX boards I'd recommend anything but a light overclock on.
But if you aren't planning on overclocking regardless, VRM is not the thing to prioritize
Hey guys, I was planning on upgrading my cpu and I've narrowed it down to two choices. Intel Xeon E3-1231v3 ~$247 or intel i5 4690 ~$223 My GPU is a MSI GTX 970 and I don't plan on overclocking. My computer is mainly for gaming, but I also record, edit, and live stream videos. Both of these cpu's take the 1150 socket.
So my specs so far are CPU: Intel i7-4790k @ stock speeds RAM: 16gb 1600mhz cl10 SSD: 128gb corsair force 3 HDD: 2x500gb nat drives in raid 1, 1tb seagate PSU: Corsair CX750M semi modular Case: Corsair 330r Graphics: Asus GTX 650 ti 2gb Mobo: Gigabyte z97p-d3 Someone i know is selling 2xradeon 7870s with a crossfire bridge and I'm aware my motherboard supports it, is it worth upgrading from my current graphics? I want to be able to play DayZ, Arma 3 and GTA V at higher framerates and I was wondering if it'd make a huge difference. cheers Oh also I forgot to mention that I'll be streaming with this setup whilst playing the games mentioned above.
There will be no difference in arma 3 and dayz.
how come?
The 2x7870 is better than what you have now, but I'm not sure if it will drastically improve your fps in Arma/DayZ. If you can get them for cheap though I don't see why you wouldn't.

Following one of the $1k builds other than the PSU and the RAM ( its not on newegg ) (PSU is a Japanese Brand; I live in Japan) I need help if this power supply will work with the pc I am building, and is it okay if I use these ram sticks? CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($219.95 @ SuperBiiz) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($29.99 @ SuperBiiz) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($115.99 @ SuperBiiz) Memory: Team Xtreme 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400 ($74.99 @ Newegg) Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($119.99 @ Micro Center) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($47.99 @ NCIX US) Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB ACX 2.0 Video Card ($329.99 @ Amazon) Power Supply: ElephantMax 80+ Gold 750W
Anybody know where I could pick up a 970 in Ireland or the UK that doesn't cost 400 euro? Or is there a better card?
Price/Performance-wise it's still the best card out there. This was the lowest price I could find.
My specs are here: http://puu.sh/eMoap/315115431f.jpg Would you recommend I upgrade anything first before the GPU? I want to make my computer pretty beastly, new CPU and RAM etc. Ah that is so expensive why do Americans have it so good with electronics prices
If you're going for a new CPU, then keep in mind that Haswell uses 1150 sockets. Which means that you'll end up needing a new motherboard. And at that point you should build an entirely new PC. You could theoretically upgrade to an Ivy Bridge, the i5 3570k for example, but then you're simply investing into an old architecture. Upgrading from 8 to 16 Gigs of RAM is also a bit of waste since even games like GTA 5 currently don't profit from it. Definitely get a new GPU. The i5 2500k still is a pretty good CPU and 8 gigs of RAM are sufficient.
Hmm okay cool, if the CPU is okay and not a bottleneck then it might be okay. Wanted more ram for snappyness and also video editing stuff. If I was just to get a 970, would it be bottlenecked ? Also would I need a new PSU? Finally, any suggestions for a 4k monitor
Does anyone have any recommendations for a small server build? I'm planning on having a little server running in my place for our gaming community (windows, because some of the games we've hosted don't support linux) and since our last one crapped out we've been quite seriously using an intel edison I got to control a hexapod I'm building to host some of our services :v: basic requirements/desires: -smaller and quieter the better, it's going to be on 24/7 in my living room so the less intrusive it is the better (a more flat case would be awesome but definitely not a requirement) -2 hard drives and raid controller support so that we can be a bit safer with our data would be nice -we'd prefer to build this fairly cheap (<700$), the server's not going to processing an excessive amount of tasks (just a low volume web server and a few games/patching applications) so we don't need the best parts available -unlikely to need more than 8GB of ram -we definitely want to throw most of the money at the processor, since graphical tasks will be at a major minimum -all parts being from newegg would be a plus, I'm in Canada so shipping from multiple companies cross-border can really add up to the cost sometimes honestly the sub-$500 build in the op should be fine for the most part but if it can be specialized a bit more for server usage it'd be great

You wouldn't have to ship cross border that way.
Does it all have to be from newegg if they're all CA stores? To drop the price you can drop the aftermarket cooler, or slim down the drive size. These drives are the same capacity and speed but a bit lower price http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/western-digital-internal-hard-drive-wd10ezex . Big thanks for the build help, by the way
Yeah, the blue's are still solid drives. They come with a 2 year warranty though versus the 5. Nothing at all wrong with them, though.

That's good, is over clocking the CPU easy? And no the heat isn't an issue, that was before I got a CPU fan. Have a 212 evo now and its in the 40c range I think usually. Oh the ram is okay? That's good to know. I duno I thought ram would help editing and make everything a bit faster, but I guess that's more CPU. My PSU is an XFX 750W Pro Core Edition 80 Plus Bronze Wired PSU. Is that okay ?
My PSU is an XFX 750W Pro Core Edition 80 Plus Bronze Wired PSU. Is that okay ?
You have a pretty decent quality PSU. Your current system overclocked wouldn't even draw close to 750 watts. Reason I state this is that I usually generally advise to change your power supply unit every 5 years or so, but since you were using a 750W unit with your current build then you're fine enough to use it for longer.
I'm almost about to buy a GTX 970 4GB because i really need a new graphics card. Should i wait a little till it gets lowered in price or hows the forecast looking for the next couple of weeks in terms of price reductions of it, and new cards coming out? Just don't wanna buy it now, and in 2 weeks there's a new better coming out to the same price you know.

It seems Hynix is having yield issues with HBM. Even with release, the 970 isn't going to drop much if at all, probably down to $300 from $330. The 980 is probably going to be the only nvidia card to really drop in price.
