How far would I be able to oc it? I'm already at 4.5-ish
I mean it all depends on motherboard and cooling, but if you're already at 4.5ghz with a Sandy Bridge i7 you're really not going to see any difference upgrading. I figured you were at stock.
Nah. I oc'd a year or 2 ago. 4.5 was the highest I could really get it.
Yeah processor tech has really stagnated for the most part. No sense in upgrading it until it's causing you performance issues.

However, I think I'm gonna toss a monitor into the build. What's a good monitor around $130 and below?

If you are okay with refurb, looks like you could save around 70 dollars on a similar build if you just get one of these
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883148251
But then you have to risk HP consumer parts. If it was a refurb business line one, I'd be all over that.
Never built a computer or anything of the like so I used LogicalIncrements and some other resources to figure out what I want to get.
A friend then put this together, so I was wondering if it looks alright or if there's anything we've missed.

I was also thinking of springing for a 970, so I was wondering whether the upgrade is worth it.

Ehh that's what I get for not refreshing. Kiwi's build is pretty similar.
Thanks to both of you for the help! One last question, I read AMD was about to release a new line on June 3rd, should I wait until then and see if the 280X drops in price?
Great! Thanks for the help, I be sure to keep an eye out on prices for the next couple of months.
Also, don't be afraid to check eBay for GPUs. Since they're some of the most interchanged parts, a lot of people like to sell their old ones. I got my 280x for around $60-70 below retail from a trustworthy seller. Just be sure to get a brand with good cooling.
So I just got my EVGA Supernova G2 750w in. Definitely the most solid feeling PSU I've ever held. Looks great too. A nice matte textured black with a clean look.
Not really going to post a build, as this is more of a motherboard question than anything.
I'm doing quite the budget build for a friend, utilizing a G3258 as the processor. Of course, I plan on overclocking the crap out of this thing. As for my choice of motherboards, I am very uncertain, for quite a few variables:
1) B85, H81, H87, and H97 are all OC capable with this chip. I would really like to try and keep B85/H81 out of this list, as they are typically, if not all, mATX, with lower-grade VRMs, not really meant to overclock with. (I'm aware that this is also the case for most H87/H97 boards, but bear with me.)
2) The processor is just temporary, and I would probably be shooting for an i3 or LOCKED i5 further on down the road. So, shooting for a Z87/97 would be avoidable, but if it is necessary, I will shoot for one. I would like to keep the mobo price down though.
3) As stated above, I would like to avoid mATX. ATX often has more power phases, which as we know, is quite useful when it comes to overclocking. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how that will fair on a H87/H97 board, considering I'm not even sure if 95% of them have a heatsink on the CPU VRMs or not, and I'm not sure if I can compensate for that lack of heatsink with more case-fans or not.
4) When OC'ing on the H87/97 chipset, I'm assuming, at least for the H87, that a BIOS update has to be issued before this can happen. Once it is ready to overclock, is there level control for LLC, or is that exclusive to native OC chipsets like Z87/97?
Guess I should also ask if there are many here who have overclocked the G3258, and if a lot of these factors are really that important for a processor with a lower TDP, or if I will be fine with a B85/H81 mATX board?
or, to shorten this out, can anyone recommend H87/97 ATX board that is pretty decent in quality, that doesn't exceed $80? I plan on buying used anyhow.
There are only specific boards that can overclock the G3258, pretty much any ASUS or Asrock board, and many MSI and Gigabyte boards. Here is a pretty good list of them. As for VRM's on the heatsinks, with modern boards they're pretty unnecessary on even high end Z97 boards sporting large i7 overclocks. I can't find the image right now, but there's a thermal camera image of a 4790k overclocked to 4.8ghz on a Gigabyte SOC Force with heatsinks on and even off and it is not getting to any worrying temperature.

So, would a 4+1 power phase design be enough to squeeze out a sufficient overclock? And do you know if these boards support level control for LLC?
Would i see much performance increase switching from an i5 3570k to an i7 3770k or 3790, or would I be just as well off getting an aftermarket cooler and overclocking?
The only game that really bothers the i5 at all is space engineers with a very large ship. I dont mind keeping it, but if I'm gonna ever upgrade to the i7 I might sell my I5 to my friend.
So I know I'm asking for alot here but I'm wondering if someone can help me with a PC build, I know a little about computers and hardware enough to get my own build but It never hurts to ask for advice as im 100% sure people here will know A LOT more than me haha.
I have around a £800 budget and I'm wanting something that can run every game I want on atleast mid settings I don't think thats a high ask at £800? I'd prefer an Intel i7 but I have no idea if my budget is enough for that or if it would be worth getting if I can't afford a graphics card to make use of all that CPU. So yea any advice would be great! thanks in advance

I might also switch to a modular PSU, depending on how much money is left. Ive got a budget of 400-500 bucks. Upgradability is the main concern.

Ah, thank you very much. One question though, how many PCI-E connectors does that PSU have? One place says "Multiple PCI-E 6-Pin and 6+2Pin connectors", one place says "PCI-Express Connector: 3 x 6+2-Pin" and another place says "1 x 6-pin PCI-E
1 x 6+2-pin PCI-E"
Im thinking I might just get a Corsair CX600 and do the rebate. At least they have clear specifications.

3x 6+2 pin. The CX600 really isn't a good quality PSU.
ooooh I get it, I had never heard of XFX before, but after discovering theyre made by seasonic, Ive got no problem at all trusting that one you linked

See where the hard drive is? The power connector to it pokes out so much that I can't put the side of the case back on. Did I do something wrong or am I just screwed?
On a lot of those the hard drive slide actually goes in on the back. Also what the hell CPU cooler is that? It looks like a double wide from here.

It's a Hyper T4. That angle makes it look a bit wider than it really is. Still better than the generic, crap, underperforming heatsink that came with the CPU.
I pushed the drives in a bit more, now I'm just barely able to close the case, but those power connectors still press against the glass like no one's business. Eh, looks like my only solution.
