Need more info?
I had been told PSU might be shit by another person on here before- I guess that should have been obvious because all the info is in Chinese. Will the gtx 970 be adequately supplied by this PSU or am I gonna have to swap that thing out first?
Yeah it is shit, if you use a 970 with that, you will start a fire.

WELL FUCK.
I guess it's off to the first post to mooch off the build lists. Looking at the "Antec Green 450W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply" (stolen from the 1000 dollar build) or perhaps the "SeaSonic G 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply" stolen from the high end. I'm going to go see if this shit is compatible with my shit but while I'm doing so, why don't you criticize my taste and lack of computer knowledge?
PS this pc part picker site is really cool, good on you linking it on the frontpage.
Edit: Antec and SeaSonic seem to be compatable with the asus card (http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-video-card-strixgtx970dc2oc4gd5) I'm looking at. Would rather go with antec because I'm fucking poor but if you've got a better idea, let me know.

Recommend minimum wattage for a 970 is 500, so I would go with the seasonic
Oh hello. I'm building- well, modifying a computer. I'm looking for a new graphics card, and those around me have reccomended the asus gtx970 or 980. Here are the ones I've dug up:

And here is my rig:

What's your fan situation? A some 970s doesn't blow hot air out the back of the case, perhaps getting a fan for that front intake could be a cheap worthwhile investment?

The 970 has a tdp of under 150w. He'll be more than fine with the quality 450w.

Fan situation is weird but until now functional. I'll look into additives. I'd love to just nick a cheap one from bestbuy but I'd assume that's probably a terrible idea.

allright, changed.
My motherboard died recently. I'm trying to find a motherboard that can replace it cheaply and that can support all hardware I already own.
After some digging, I found this. My CPU, RAM, HDDs, and GPU all seem to be supported. The only thing that makes me hesitate is that it is a micro ATX board instead of a regular ATX. Are there any huge disadvantages or pitfalls I should be aware of when going with a motherboard like that until I eventually do a full upgrade? All I'm looking for is something to get my PC through the next 6 months or so.
I would honestly not touch anything that still uses usb2 ports.
I would honestly not touch anything that still uses usb2 ports.
Why? I'm sure a majority of your devices only use USB 2.0.
Not to mention just about every board still has some USB 2.0. It's pretty much required if you're installing 7 and don't have a disk drive.
So I decided to try using an AIO liquid cooler with my XFX R9 290x, and so far I am not impressed. I've got a Corsair H50 with a Kraken G10, and my temps are actually worse than with the stock cooler. I don't know if it's the paste I used, or if it's how I have my radiator situated in my case. If I mounted it on the bottom, would I get better cooling? It does seem to happen in spikes--sometimes it gets way too hot and then just cools down instantly.
I thought maybe it was an issue with how the pump was getting power but I disabled ALL of the controller settings for the headers on my mobo, so there is a constant 12v being supplied to the pump. Right now my radiator is mounted above the card on the rear of my case. I feel like if it were on the bottom, the pump would work a lot less.
What's a good paste to use for GPUs? I've heard that MX4 is good for them. I'm not too sure what I used, but I used whatever was available. I've used the same cooler with my CPU and had no issues like this, so could the paste really be the problem? I've heard that some pastes handle GPU heat better than others.
Just looking for some advice because I'm sick of seeing my GPU heat to 77c when opening a youtube video.
EDIT: now that I think about it I have my GPU pump hooked up to a fan header on my CPU pump (it's a thermaltake water 3), so maybe that's just giving it irregular voltages. I'm gonna switch some stuff around.

The H50 is really not a strong cooler at all. GPU's require a lot more heat to be dissipated than a CPU does.

I initially wanted to use the thermaltake with it but the hoses are too short to be mounted in the front or the top. Pretty much had to use the H50.
[editline]30th May 2015[/editline]
P sure it's a voltage regulation thing, the headers on the thermaltake are designed for changing voltages so I bet the pump isn't getting enough power
[editline]30th May 2015[/editline]
Definitely seems to me it's the paste. I just took the cooler off to look at the paste and it's all pooled up onto one end of the GPU. And I applied it properly for even coverage. I plugged the pump straight into the motherboard and went to open a youtube video and temps jumped up to 98C.

Personal preference and future proofing. My only devices that use usb2 are my kbm and ilok. I have a lot of drives and I refuse to use anything that isn't 3.
Yeah this is def a paste problem. I'm gonna order up something actually good.
Yeah this is def a paste problem. I'm gonna order up something actually good.
Paste quality won't make that big of a difference. How are you applying it?
Paste quality won't make that big of a difference. How are you applying it?
Like normal, less is more, etc. But with this I do need more. The initial application looked like plenty but it covered only half of the chip after it heated and became runny. I just added more and now it no longer crashes when opening Youtube. I've seen plenty of benchmark reports on temps with the H50 and people are reporting much better temps than this.
I do not think paste should have the consistency of melted butter after it's seen some use.
EDIT
Out of curiosity I managed to find a (shitty in the sense of cable management) way to get my thermaltake water 3.0 on my GPU and it's the same exact results. Watching a video on youtube causes it to quickly heat up to 90C. I still need to give it time for the paste to set but I'm really not going to hold my breath.

Nothing wrong at all with having an mATX board, I used one for my first build for years. Just watch that it has all the ports/slots you'll need. For example, if you have a PCI expansion card you may get space/airflow difficulties with a big graphics card. Picking mATX is great if you're focusing on spending your money on other hardware and only need something to stick it into without any bells and whistles.
I'm trying to decide on what monitor I'll get with my PC build, but I'm not entirely sure what's a good choice.
Does running a game on a 2560x1440 monitor use the same amount of power/CPU/GPU as running it on a 1920x1080 with 2x MSAA? The latter yields a higher pixel count (4.1472 million vs 3.6864 million), and is there a noticeable difference between the two resolutions?
Well I figured out my problem. The cooler wasn't making proper contact with the die. A small plastic piece was forcing the cooler to sit higher up. When I noticed that I pushed the cooler up as I was reseating it and now it's as I expect it.

So I just realised I haven't got enough cable ties to tie my wires out the way and such properly and I thought i'd ask, is there a better alternative to cable ties that you guys use?
I personally use velcro cable ties because they're reusable and spiral cable wraps for cables that are all going to the same place. It makes usb outputs very clean and tidy to manage.
Oh yeah that shit is great. Also as a part of their most recent email promotion, for the next day or so, they have a 970 for $299. It's one of the smaller ones meant for smaller cases. Their zotac 970 is 310 and the evga one is 324.
Pretty good deals really if that's your price range.
Is the Zotac 980 Ti the cheapest 980 Ti?
If you're going to blow so much money on a graphics card do it right and don't just get the cheapest you can.
I didn't think 144hz would make much of a difference, but once I got mine all the motion was just sooooooo niiiiiice looking. I'm hooked now.
Instead of getting a 4k I might just wait and get a higher hz 1080 monitor then.
750$ budget. Can you guys help me with a build?
Some things I want it to have:
Intel / nvidia
Dual gpu (SLI? It's been a long time)
Processor uncapped
Only building the tower itself, no OS or anything. Do need a case though.
