Hello everyone. I'm actually completely new to PC building but I've heard it's pretty simple if you just follow the guides so I'm pretty confident I could put one together. I've also been saving money for a while now to build up a budget for this. The part I'm not so sure of is exactly what parts I would need for what I want to do, so I'm going to be asking for a lot of help, but I hope it isn't too much questions. The current PC I use is actually a laptop with the following specs: Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4500U CPU @ 1.80GHz Video Card 1: NVIDIA GeForce GT 745M Video Card 2: Intel(R) HD Graphics Family Memory: 8.1 GB Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8 (build 9200), 64-bit It's been working really great and runs a lot of games well, but with more graphically intensive games and even some lesser ones (IMO at least) it gets really hot and laggy. I tried GTA V and it ran a bit laggy on the lowest possible settings at 1920x1080, and it felt like anything higher would have caused an overheat since the laptop was already around 80-90 degrees Celsius. What I want now is a nice desktop PC that runs the newer/newest games (GTA V, Skyrim, Witcher 3, games like that) at 1080p really smoothly, 60fps. I'll also be using it to surf the internet, Microsoft Office applications like Word/Powerpoint, and other applications like emulation software and stuff. One thing I'm wondering is if the $750.00 build on the front page would work for me? Or would it be better to save up for a while longer and get the $1,000.00 build? I also put together some things I really want from the PC: -Long-term updates. I want to be able to upgrade the parts when the time comes in the future. -At least 4 USB ports, 1 HDMI port. -Some sort of wi-fi card. Not exactly necessary but I really want it since I'm used to it on the laptop. The next items are things I would like some recommendations on. I'm not sure if these will be in a seperate budget or not, but if it's not too much to ask, I was hoping someone could figure out a build with the following included, as well as with the following not included with the PC budget. If someone does this, please don't include the monitor in any of the budgets. The monitor is sort of a side thing not related to the budget since I could use my TV... -A case. Again I'm completely new to this so I'm not sure what kind of case would even be useful for me. -1TB hard drive I'm thinking 1TB as my current laptop has 1TB. I've used 681 GB out of 909 GB, so I think a 1TB one would be okay, especially since I want to get more games later on which will use more space. I've been looking around and this one seems like it would work, but a lot of the negative reviews are saying "dead on arrival" or "Dead within a week" so I"m not very sure about that. -Good wired keyboard. Doesn't have to be fancy but definitely quality (by fancy I mean lights and colors and such). The keyboard I've been looking at is the Das Keyboard 4C, though it is quite expensive. I was wondering if there's a good quality keyboard for less than ~$150? One more thing: Good monitor? 1920x1080, can show 60fps (so 60hz right?). My current screen is 15.6 inches. Same size is fine. This one is separate because I actually have a medium-sized TV (about 37 inch I believe) that I could use as the monitor with an HDMI cord, but I kind of want a smaller monitor for more personal use. Since I already have one though, this is not a priority. Any info on a good one would be appreciated. I do apologize if this is asking for way too much, because I really do feel like I'm asking for waaaaaaay too much aid on this. The first post says "No question is stupid in the realm of blowing $1k on a new system", but at the same time I'm asking about basically everything so I hope this post is okay. Thanks for any information in advance. I greatly appreciate any help that is given, even if it's "do more research on these things" or something.

The DAS keyboards are very nice, but the Coolermaster ones are solid too. They just don't have as many features like USB ports and headphone jacks. If you want a keyboard with a number pad the version with one is like 10 bucks more.

I just have a little question about the bottom notes it's talking about?
-The NZXT Source 210 (White) ATX Mid Tower Case supports video cards up to 330mm long, but video cards over 230mm may block drive bays. Thanks for any information! You've been a huge help.

The ones on the motherboard in the back will be perfectly usable, you just won't have any USB 3.0 ports on the front of the case, only 2.0 2) It will block a couple of the upper hard drive bays. This won't be a problem unless you plan on having more than 4 or 5 hard drives. Use this picture as an example, see how there's really not enough room for hard drives in the top 3 hard drive bay slots due to the length of the video card? [t]http://www.techspot.com/fileshost/newspics3/2011/nzxt-source-120.jpg[/t] [editline]6th June 2015[/editline] And to clarify a bit on the USB port situation, it means you'll have 2 USB 2.0 in the front, 4 2.0 and 2 3.0 in the back.
So you haven't built yet? I'd recommend getting a better PSU.
Why would I need a better PSU? I put my configuration into a PSU calculator and it came up with recommended power rating of 567 watts. I don't plan on using water cooling or having a SLI setup. Overclocking isn't needed either, but it only raises the needed power by 100 watts.
I'm quite obviously dicking around We'll in terms now call me 'The guy who really has no damn clue what he's doing with computers other than having some Win7 pro copies and knows how to assemble parts' Why would I pay for something near the price of the amazing case that I'll never have to worry about room in any time soon? I don't exactly understand what you're trying to say either. I can swap drives out in two seconds. Pull out, push in. I've even 3D printed some spare hotswaps with auto-locking mechs so I don't have to screw any new drives in. Why ya gotta be like that man. Edit: If you can't tell somebody is fucking around when they say "Guru" other than a person situated in the middle of Asia, please heighten your sense of humor.
I have the all black version of the case, it really is a great case, you have to own it to know just how great it is. Though I do think the Snow edition is a bit meh, but not as bad as the green one :v:

It's a mediocre unit priced like a good one, so you can get much better for the money. Check out the EVGA Supernova G2 or GS series, anything by Seasonic, Delta, XFX, or Superflower (Especially the superflower Leadex platform) as well as the Antec HCP. A 750w will leave you with plenty of headroom and probably end up cheaper than the 1kw RM.

this is just for fun i have an idea for a powerful computer to use in the office for office use in which you can game(dota, counterstrike) too but is mostly used for keeping tabs on a bunch of assignments having lot of windows open with music and stuff.it would be connected to a cloud/tower server it basically just a nice motherboard with integreated graphics and intel cpu with graphics GIGABYTE GA-Z97-HD3 (rev. 2.0) LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard 99$ CPU with integrated graphics comes with fan (i wanted to go amd apu but w.e) 340$ Intel Core i7-4790K Devil’s Canyon Quad-Core 4.0GHz LGA 1150 BX80646I74790K Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4600 personal hard drive (work/group related things to the server) 54$ RAM(is it possible to use the SSD as RAM or do they need to make new motherboards for that) Mushkin Enhanced Radioactive 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model 999006 95$ power supply 430watt for 40 dollars im just guesstemating the watt this build would have CD/DVD reader and writer 20 dollars ASUS 24X DVD Burner - Bulk 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM Black SATA Model DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS - OEM im kind of in a hurry at this point so its w/e cheap case that has fans on it for the case you can just make a wooden box with fans and that would be a good ratio of compact and cheap(i prefer this method) case(proper)(take out the power supply and make the mounts with like Popsicle sticks and screws/nuts or leave it if possible case 45$ APEX DM-387 Black Steel Micro ATX Media Center / Slim HTPC Computer Case w/ ATX12V TFX 275W Power Supply the flap opens from the front with the cd/dvd drives are sideways btw - comes with 80mm fan on the top that you can use as outtake while 1 120 mm on the side for intake that is relatively aligned with the CPU fan aswell some extra fans to distribute 4 for 15 dollars$ you could use 2 fans for the wooden case...would like nicer too sand it down grind the edges with a router to get frame look OS- linux ubuntu dude. [editline]7th June 2015[/editline]
this is just for fun i have an idea for a powerful computer to use in the office for office use in which you can game(dota, counterstrike) too but is mostly used for keeping tabs on a bunch of assignments having lot of windows open with music and stuff.it would be connected to a cloud/tower server it basically just a nice motherboard with integreated graphics and intel cpu with graphics GIGABYTE GA-Z97-HD3 (rev. 2.0) LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard 99$ CPU with integrated graphics comes with fan (i wanted to go amd apu but w.e) 340$ Intel Core i7-4790K Devil’s Canyon Quad-Core 4.0GHz LGA 1150 BX80646I74790K Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4600 personal hard drive (work/group related things to the server) 54$ RAM(is it possible to use the SSD as RAM or do they need to make new motherboards for that) Mushkin Enhanced Radioactive 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model 999006 95$ power supply 430watt for 40 dollars im just guesstemating the watt this build would have CD/DVD reader and writer 20 dollars ASUS 24X DVD Burner - Bulk 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM Black SATA Model DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS - OEM im kind of in a hurry at this point so its w/e cheap case that has fans on it for the case you can just make a wooden box with fans and that would be a good ratio of compact and cheap(i prefer this method) case(proper)(take out the power supply and make the mounts with like Popsicle sticks and screws/nuts or leave it if possible case 45$ APEX DM-387 Black Steel Micro ATX Media Center / Slim HTPC Computer Case w/ ATX12V TFX 275W Power Supply the flap opens from the front with the cd/dvd drives are sideways btw - comes with 80mm fan on the top that you can use as outtake while 1 120 mm on the side for intake that is relatively aligned with the CPU fan aswell some extra fans to distribute 4 for 15 dollars$ you could use 2 fans for the wooden case...would like nicer too sand it down grind the edges with a router to get frame look OS- linux ubuntu dude. anyway so yeah this was an idea for a "office" build that one can use to monitor stocks and multi task above average with high performance non graphical/audio related. i feel like something is missing. total- $696
You don't want to use an SSD as RAM. Because SSD have limited writes, and your system makes hundreds of writes to your memory every hour, which means a SSD device would have a lifespan of a few days at that rate. Plus in terms of pure speed SSD is extremely slow compared to memory. Random Access Memory does not store the values after the power has been turned off, NAND the memory sed in SSD hardware does. NAND would make horrible Random Access Memory for a lot of reasons other then speed. My gut feeling also tells me that you shouldn't buy 3 RAM sticks if that mainboard supports 4 RAM sticks. The third one might not be registered by the system, either use 2 or 4. These 3 stick kits were introduced for mainboards which have 6 RAM sockets. Reading your post makes me think that you shouldn't make a wooden box as your PC case. Things can get hot, and depending on the wood used there might be some unforeseen consequences.
Yeah Shilka is really good with PSUs. Compiles some great recommendation lists too.

Okay so I haven't upgraded my PC since 2011. Right now it has 12gb RAM, dual GTX 580s, and i7-960 3.2GHz Quad-Core. Where should I go from here if I'm not wanting to upgrade for the next five-four years?
I want to upgrade this 7 year old dinosaur: Am I right in thinking that nothing is particularly salvageable for an upgraded setup and it's best just to get the below? Obv I'll keep the monitor, storage, DVD drive and X-Fi if they are all compatible. This is what I'm thinking I need, taken from Sub-$750 build Intel Core i5-4460 MSI H97 PC MATE ATX LGA1150 Mushkin Radioactive 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 EVGA GeForce GTX 960 4GB Superclocked Antec Green 450W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply (Probably Windows 7 too?) Current case is an Antec 300; presumably this will be ok?

If you're targeting 1080p or 1440, you'll want the extra horsepower for future games. Also I would look into getting a small ssd if you can find one on sale, installing Windows to that will male a world of difference for everyday performance.
