At the moment i have a Radeon HD 7700 series (I think it might be the 7770, not sure though), and there are quite a few games it struggles to play. Star Citizen doesn't run well enough to be really playable, neither does GTA 5, CoH2 lags at higher settings, KF2 is around 15-20 FPS at higher settings etc so i'd like to upgrade.
I'm thinking about getting a GTX 960 but I'm not sure if that would be something more than i need really and at around £180 that wouldn't leave me with a lot of money left. I have at most £200 but don't really want to spend it all. Can anyone help me decide what to get?

I see you are from UK, so I found this on Amazon. This is probably best you can get at this price, and it is far better than any 960 you can get. Its "one level" higher than your 7770 or 960. If you cant get this, try 280x (like this, XFX looks amazing: http://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-Express-Graphics-2xDVI-2xm-DP/dp/B00FSC5N66/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1434448527&sr=1-1&keywords=280x), its better than 960 overall.
another question: should I just get a g3258 and a h81 mobo and just overclock instead of an i5-4590 and a h97
i'm all ears :~)

i haven't built a computer since i was like 14 and i've never had much experience with dealing with hardware.
[editline]13th June 2015[/editline]
the gst is already applied, the total is including gst (10% of the product's price)
the total is $1501, the total GST is $136.45
the total - GST = 1364.55 and 10% of that is 136.45
generally in australia all prices include GST, it is very rare for a price to be shown without GST applied because isn't displaying the total price.

the motherboard was just a selection based on reviews, i'd totally go for a cheaper board if you have any suggestions?
I have the GIGABYTE GA-G1 Sniper Z97, and so far it's been flawless. I also love the apps. You don't have to go into the BIOS to change settings.
another question: should I just get a g3258 and a h81 mobo and just overclock instead of an i5-4590 and a h97
No.
As a retard, that know nothing about pc building, I wanna know if the high end build in the OP is still the "best" option if your budget is 2k or if it could be worth switching some of the components with something else. Not interested if the differences between the components are very minor.
Would the specs also be pretty good for recording and video making and such? Probably a really dumb question but I know nothing.
Sorry if I should have made a new thread.
Well the OP was last updated in May, so it seems recent enough.
so many cool games this year, i think i need to buy a new GFX card. I've got an i7-4770 and 16GB RAM, but still using my old 260GTX from my last build. Is the 970 really worth the $100 extra over the 960? I don't play PC games a ton, my monitor is 1920x1200, and 60fps at max resolution isn't hugely important to me. I'd just like to be able to play FO4, JC3, and the new Mad Max (also Deadly Premonition because currently i get like 10fps lol
I know the system specs aren't out yet, but what build do you guys think will be needed to run Fallout 4 at max graphics settings at 60FPS? I need a new build, excluding keyboard, mouse, hard drives and DVD drive so I figured I'd ask here for advice.
No.
Glad you said that, looking at it now the i5 blows it out of the water in mostly everything else.
Current build is 8gb RAM, i5 2500k, gtx770 and as ASRock Pro3. I was going to completely build a new PC but think upgrading the majority of it would be the best thing to do price wise at the minute. I need a powerful build that can run stuff like unreal 4, zbrush, Maya and Photoshop at the same time.
Mostly looking to upgrade the RAM, CPU and mobo. I think my PSU is 750w so if I need a new one - one of those too. Budget is £400ish?
[editline]16th June 2015[/editline]
16gb RAM minimum.
I can also buy some of the smaller parts in the USA since they're cheaper while I'm here.
Merge but put the budget where you think is good then.
another question i forgot to ask too
do you by any chance take advantage of open cl or what does maya need exactly?
i know maya you need threads for days
I don't quite understand what you mean but I basically just use Maya as it installs. Its probably the least resource intensive of all the crap I use, unreal 4 and Photoshop are the biggest memory sinks.
I need help to understand why my 970 isnt at 100% load when playing games. Im worried that my CPU is bottlenecking it but I dont know if its my drivers acting up or what
My CPU is a I5 2320 @ 3.0 hz
Maybe because you're not 100% loading it? It's a powerful card. Games that will really run it hard are few and far between. Run a synthetic benchmark like furmark, or better yet, just download msi afterburner and the msi kombustor add-on for it and that'll give you an easy way to run furmark while also allowing you to read all your gpu stats in real time in afterburner. Could also over clock with it if you're interested.
The witcher 3 will also run it at full usage all of the time for sure, it's a very well optimized game. It'll also run it at damn near 4k max settings with hairworks at over 30fps so I mean yeah we're talking about a pretty high end card here.
I dunno if this is the place to ask, but I want to upgrade my sound from my pc/TV combo, don't really care about surround sound, what's the best 2.1 speaker set I could get for a reasonable price? I'm guessing between 100-200 bucks for decent quality but I may be underestimating the prices a bit. Or if I could go just above 200 or to 250ish and go for full surround sound that'd be cool too, just not a requirement if I can get something just as good cheaper.
My computer just broke today and I'm complete shit at building computers. What would be recommended for someone who plays a game like FFXIV?
So far I only have a 120g samsung solid state that I havent used.
wooooooo got all my parts, the case is at my friends house because i had to lug ALL the fucking parts including the case 1 km to his place and i couldn't be fucked taking it all in one run to mine.
gonna go grab the case now and put it together!

What's your budget?
What's your budget?
400-600

Yeah that's what it was, I made it use more power and used the OC mode in MSI gaming app, now everything runs great!
400-600
That's a tight budget. What was your current computer? What broke?
That's a tight budget. What was your current computer? What broke?
I'm so bad with this stuff, so I apologize in advance.
I basically bought this 5-6 years ago off of newegg. It was an already built ibuypower PC.
It had an amd radeon 5650 (er maybe 5600?) with 10 gigs of ram.
I had video memory of about 1gig.
I also had water cooled systems that made loud noises that sounded like if you put a piece of paper in a fan. But it made that noise for like 3 years? had no issues.
Until recently when all of a sudden I didnt hear any noise from the water coolent system when I booted it up. I was just on the browser until I saw that the computer overheated and I believed fried some of the ram sticks.
I tried turning it on again and the computer turned "on" but nothing on the monitor was showing and none of the fans moved. So I assumed everything was a goner.
What CPU does it have? That's probably the most important thing.
These new radeon cards look dope. The really small one is quite amazing tech.
boy this is fucking hard, i've been at it for a good hour and i'm almost done, gotta go to work though have no clue how to actually wire this shit up.
the graphics card has 12 pin holes in total for power and the pcie cable has 8 pins
Is the 970 really worth the $100 extra over the 960?
Yes it is, if you have money for it.
boy this is fucking hard, i've been at it for a good hour and i'm almost done, gotta go to work though have no clue how to actually wire this shit up.

They are 2, 6 pins rather then 1, 12 pin.
Almost all 8 pin cables are actualyl a 6 pin with the other 2 being optional

You'll have to to connect both 6 pin connectors.
If you lack the cables you can get an stata 15 pin to PCI-E 6 pin, or molex to PCI-E 6 pin. Or 8 pin to 6 pin.
Although most PSUs should have for the connectors required for hooking up a GPU like this, unless you're putting a new GPU into a prebuild.
ah so i use 2 of those cables, ignoring the 2 pin part?
[editline]17th June 2015[/editline]
putting the cpu in and then the cooler was one of the most tense moments of my life, i really hope i didnt break it.
oh fuck yeah, my pc is onnnnnnnnnnnn
just gotta put windows on it and we're in business baby!
[editline]17th June 2015[/editline]
forgot to connect sata cables from hhd and disk drive to mobo :~)
What CPU does it have? That's probably the most important thing.
oh god I dont even remember. I believe it was an i7 quad core with 3.2 ghz?
Also my boss just told me if I buy a Thinkstation p300 at work I can take the current one I use at work and take it home. The one I have at work is actually pretty decent. So I'd end up paying about 550$ for it.
