You're right, I got my versions mixed up. The 2xx series is 1.1, and the R9 380 is the only R9 one on 1.2, the rumors of 390 and 390x on 1.1 were incorrect.
Pretty much, if you're interested in the changes between the 290 series and 390 series, this is a good read : http://anandtech.com/show/9387/amd-radeon-300-series/3
I don't understand the purpose of the 390/390X cards.
To me 8gb seems really off performance/memory wise, unless you get them in SLI.
And if you're going to go SLI its either 860 / 660 dollars for a 390X / 390, while you can get a liquid cooled R9 295X2 8GB for 630 dollars.
3xx cards are basically middle children to keep the R7/R9 children happy
that being said they're actually ok cards if you're upgrading from a much older card
But why would you ever pay for a version of the 290 with more memory and no real increased performance.
If you're playing games at the resolutions/settings required to go over 4gb, you're literally playing at ~10-20 fps.
Like the 390(X) is 80 dollars more expensive then the 290(X), its just a waste of money if you're never gonna use it.
Unless there is a giant shift, this makes no fucking sense.
Bit the bullet and bought a 970 for only $297. First upgrade since Feb 2012
Teach me how to airflow, please, will you Facepunch?

Yellow is fan surfaces. The case (Source 530) is open everywhere but the sides.
First setup is negative and the second is positive.

good buy.
Neither of those are positive pressure. This is positive pressure.

I have a few specific questions:
1) Is there any case that could be recommended? If possible I'd still like it to look good and function well/have good airflow.
2) What are your opinions on buying an SSD? I thought of putting it off until later if I wanted it, and it would save me a couple bux to spend elsewhere.
3) Are any of the new Radeon cards worth looking into? Should I be looking into GForce alternatives?
Thanks in advance!
Fractal define r4 is usually my go-to case, it's roomy, silent, has filters and is pretty damn sleek. They usually go on sale for $70.
You could get a 970 instead of a 290, it'll be like 50 dollars more expensive, but you get what you pay for either way.
The 3xx series 290(X) feature 8gb of ram, and are thus 80$ more expensive, while providing a very marginal performance increase. 4gb of ram will be more then enough for the time being.
You should get an SSD, but i am not sure how to budget your build, you can always buy it later, or go for an 50$ 120 kingston SSD right now.

Another R4 user here, it's cheap, sleek and has noise reducing panels. Personally i like to leave my front panel open because i feel it will increase the airflow. Also removing both HDD cages will greatly increase airflow.
With no fans on and everything covered its dead silent. With all fans going and front panel open with low noise fans, its still pretty quiet.

Generally a psu evacuates its air through the rear then, right? In which case that makes a lot more sense and I feel kind of stupid for thinking mine was an exhaust fan for the unit.

That cpu cooler may conflict with the ram placement on the Asus board. I have one and it's very close to the left most ram slot.
Instead of getting 2 970s you'd be better getting a 980ti. Sli isn't perfect for some games but the 980ti will still outperform it at a better price.
Why do you need a sound card?
[editline]20th June 2015[/editline]
Unless you're using high end studio monitors you'll be fine with the built in audio the mobo gives you
There was only meant to be one card whoops
Sound cards gone
Also corsair water cooler/ asus hero/ and titans should i invest in any of them as in the future as a upgrade?
Edit: how is the 970 at: 1440, multiscreen or 4k?
Should i skip the coolmaster for a corsair water cooled one?

it should be okay for most games at 1440 in the near future. 4k is a different story.
Would just get a 980ti instead of 970 SLI, you'll get twice the ram at the cost of 5-10% less performance.
And you'll have less diminishing returns if you choose to buy a second one at some point.
I meant to put 1 970 not two
Also on the cooler and ram space issue: its only two sticks of ram could they just go in the furthest slots to the right?

You can save a bit of cash by dropping to a 4690 or 4590 if you aren't overclocking, otherwise you should upgrade to a z97 motherboard so you can overclock it. If you aren't overclocking, you might not need the cooler: I'm using a stock intel cooler on a 4590 and under load it doesn't go higher than 63c. It isn't too loud either.

Huh, I thought I did get a Z97 one. Also I'm having a bit of a hard time deciding whether I want to overclock or not, it'll cost an extra ~$80 all up to make it overclockable, but I'm really not sure if I'd ever do it. I've been playing games at low settings, 720p, and 25fps for most of my life, so just being able to run something at decent to high settings will blow my mind.
What're the benefits of overclocking? From what I've gathered it's just a quick way to squeeze a bit of extra performance out of your rig?

Overclocking is not worth it for many people. Just get a non OC version and instead pay for a more decent cooler than stock one. Just for noise reasons and maybe even it helps your cpu last longer due less heat. Im not sure about that part. But its deffinetly worth it getting a better cooler.
The Haswell cpus tend to be a little warmer anyway so regardless a non stock cooler would be best
Hey a friend of mine wants some input on a build hes doing and he doesnt have a FP account
What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.
High end modding of Skyrim and potentially Fallout 4 modding. I also want to fit a black/green themed water cooled system, sort of a fallout themed color scheme, but a more futuristic approach.
If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, FPS, game settings)
I'm looking for 60+ at least on skyrim at 1440p with heavy texture mods.
What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?
4500

I left a lot of these catagories empty because I plan on carrying over what I'm currently using, am not exactly sure what I need yet to match the given parts, have not researched a given part well enough to decide, or haven't yet found a part to match the green/black theme.
I'm also really open to other case designs that might fit the theme, I would really prefer a full atx case.
Idea on why i picked some parts though.
cpu: Don't feel like paying for the x99 board, and there are no green/black x99 or z97 boards that I'm aware of. If there are any I would be willing to switch to match those boards.
Motherboard: I'm not too picky when it comes to bios, I couldn't really find any pure black, or green/black motherboards to fit the theme so I just settled with this. Would be entirely willing to change for an upgrade or theme matcher.
GPU: I like the idea of HBM, I'm quiet worried about the limited amount of RAM though. I'm considering going with a 980ti instead, but the enthusiast in me wants to have one of the first boards to have HBM in it, and direct x12 has potential VRAM stacking in the future?
RAM: 1866 is the fastest that my mobo supports that I'm aware of? Want to go 4*4 to match ram waterblock
SSD: I have limited knowledge on SSD and just chose 500gb for the size
HDD: Also have limited HDD knowledge and choose based on advice and 1tb size
Optical drive: Litterally 0 knowledge and choose based on ability to use blueray dvd and cd.
Thermal pastes: I listed 3 empty ones for different parts? I've heard that you need to have specific pastes for GPU's CPU's Ect
Motherboard Wires: Just trying to match theme
Case: The best that i've come across with theme matching, I really want a window, preferably clear(not tinted green). Looking for a Full ATX
Reservoirs: Just matching theme
Pump: Advice from friend
Radiator: Not sure what the case fits, will probably wait to get until case arrives.
Fittings/water lines/coolant: Waiting for case
Waterblocks: Trying to match theme, clear seems like it would be nice for the green coolant that i plan on using
Fan controller: Would be neat to have a controller match the theme based on water cooling
Monitor: To match the radeon Fury x's capabilties in 1440p with free sync, I would swap if i got a 980ti to a 1440p gsync
Keyboard: Either this or razor chroma, i liked the RGB and key caps on this better
Mouse: Pretty set on this, decent optical mouse with RGB, that seems like it would fit my lazy palm style
Mouse pad: I currently have a large steel series, but I'm looking to find a full keyboard/mouse pad that fits the black/green theme
Headphones: I have ad700's right now but the ad700x fits theme better
Speakers: Currently using some $150 klipsch 2.1 speakers from bestbuy, I was thinking about getting Corsair Gaming Audio Series SP2500 or a 5.1 surround sound system. I really prefer using speakers over my headphones most of the time, but I'm not sure how i would setup stands to fit a 5.1 system
Table: Haven't looked into it yet, but I want the computer to sit on the desk to the right of the monitor, and would prefer a black/green design.
Chair: Would prefer to match theme I have no knowledge of gaming chairs/ computer chairs.
NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.
Also, I have no parts I could re-use for this new build
What's the safest way to transport a computer from one place to another?
I'm taking my computer back with me to college and I don't want the ride to damage anything. I'm guessing it should be mostly okay but what should I do to protect it. I kept the box for the case as well in case I'd need it.

The last time I transported my PC, I just put it back in the box the case came in (using the protective packaging) and laid the box flat in the boot of my car. As long as everything's secured inside the PC and you have all the packaging for the case, this should work.
Same goes for monitors too.
