Some very CPU heavy games, like Total War games or large MMO's, would probably benefit from the i5. Take a look at this video, as you can see in general the frames are pretty much even, pointing to the GPU being the lowest performing part.
I don't get it. I've just saw a video of someone with less RAM than me but the same GPU and CPU playing Far Cry 3 on max settings, yet I struggled to play it on high settings after a year of not playing it.
My Seagate corrupted. Got it repaired with their warrenty, corrupted again. Got it replaced. Corrupted again. Trashed it. Replaced with Western Digital. Hasn't broke since.
The only hard drive I've ever had die was a wd black 1tb that kept getting more and more bad sectors and corrupting my os. I rmad it and they sent me back a 2tb. I also have a wd green, which everyone seems to think fails all the time, that I have had for around 8 years. It was in an enclosure and the enclosure stopped working, then I mounted it internally in both my desktops so far.
since my laptop struggles to run the witcher 3 at all low and 1080, ill be looking to build a new desktop soon. how relevant are the builds in the OP still? Im thinking Ill want to do a $700 - 1000 build. my laptop is a lenovo y510p 6gb ram 2x geforce gt 750m sli i5-4200m @2.5ghz so im guessing at least 8gb ram, im guessing a 970 or 980, some type of quad core i5 or i7 (i dont know much about cpus) any help?
So I think my AMD FX-8320 is kicking the bucket... And I'm thinking of jumping shit to Intel again. How does an i5 4690 sound? I'm just not sure on what chipset to go for on the board, or what board even (I'm good with a relatively cheap one, not planning to sli and I've got an external soundcard/amp) How would the 4690 compare against the FX8320?
Any arguments? Can someone recommend a low-profile heatsink? I already have RAM (G.Skill Ripjaw) and a PSU (CX500). Don't need a monitor, keyboard, OS, mouse, etc. PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($166.95 @ SuperBiiz) Motherboard: Asus Maximus VI Gene Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($118.98 @ Newegg) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($46.99 @ NCIX US) Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 280 3GB Dual-X Video Card ($149.99 @ Newegg) Case: Cooler Master Silencio 352 MicroATX Mini Tower Case ($59.99 @ Newegg) Total: $542.90 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-06-29 20:28 EDT-0400

wait isnt the 970 the one with the whole 3.5gb actual vram and .5gb "vram" debacle [editline]29th June 2015[/editline]
Do you need an OS? Do you plan to OC? The above build may be great, but it's a bit above your budget.
im good on OS, dont really plan on OCing but i may look into it is the i7-4790 worth it over the i5-4690? from what i saw it only squeezed out a few extra frames in most current games, but i also want the build to last a while. will it provide enough of an improvement over time that it could future proof the cpu for a few years?
wait isnt the 970 the one with the whole 3.5gb actual vram and .5gb "vram" debacle
Yes it is. Though to be fair, if you're only going to be using it for general gaming and nothing "enthusiast"-worthy, the .5GB vram is trivial. If it really bothers you, you could wait for the new AMD cards coming out soon.
i think im good on OS at least i can just beta test windows 10, right? [editline]29th June 2015[/editline] FUCK MERGE also what is the line between general gaming and "enthusiast" I want to be able to run brand new games on very high settings and get good frame rates
will it provide enough of an improvement over time that it could future proof the cpu for a few years?
There's no such thing as "future proofing", having said that, the statement is true to some degree. However, for your budget and what you're aiming for, you really don't need an i7 over an i5. Unless you're doing some hardcore rendering and 3d work. Spending some time reading Levelog, Kiwi, tomshardware and an assortment of other hardware users made me realize that.
I'd get a 4870k instead of the 5820k and get a 980ti instead.
Can't, the motherboard isn't the same LGA. And I replace the motherboard I have to get rid of the M.2 SSD too.
There's motherboards by Asus that support both the i7 4870k and m.2. I generally avoid stuff like that. Crucial's SSD offerings are basically recommended everywhere.
Not sure about that. Also reviews for this SSD are good. Apart from the SSD though, is everything else OK?
Oh, turns out you might be right. I remember OCZ for their RAM modules with laughable "heatsinks" ... seems like they've calmed down a notch for their SSDs. It looks pretty solid regardless though.. I personally probably wouldn't want a 500W psu with a 980 because I like to have a lot of headroom, but it should work fine.

I'm gonna pull the trigger on this one. Thanks for the help! (P.S The previous head of OCZ left two years ago and since then they've been focusing on SSDs, so no more heatsink ram.)
Not sure about that. Also reviews for this SSD are good. Apart from the SSD though, is everything else OK?
You should replace the PSU. It's not a very good one. http://au.pcpartpicker.com/part/antec-power-supply-hcg620m [editline]30th June 2015[/editline] It wasn't the previous head that left, they went belly up. Then toshiba bought them.
Should I go for a CM 212X or a CM 212 EVO? Not quite sure on the difference.
They're practically the same, but the 212X is a bit easy to apply thermal paste with. Different fan, but I think the differences are marginal. I've yet to find a 212X for sale on normal retailers in the US, so I haven't been able to pick one up. If they're near the same price, choose the X.
Oh cool, here in Australia the 212X is actually cheaper for some reason.
