Wow thanks. I guess the small trade off for a better video card is the better move.
If you can plump the extra money, you can even overclock the CPU for just $27 with a fairly decent cooler.
Some more expensive, but superior options also, should you so desire.
Is there any reason that you want an AMD CPU?
From experience, I got an 8350 and am not happy with it.
In this country, summer's a fucking bitch. I have a goddamn 212 Evo and I can't keep the fucker below 46-48ºC ... at IDLE.
Well, that's why I'm getting a pretty good cpu cooler as-well, and also, I can live with those temps.
I have always had AMD CPU's in my desktops. And I've always been happy with them.
The FX series was a massive letdown though. So did I until then. I would not recommend an FX chip.
If you're ready for having an oven under/on top of your desk, I guess we can't talk you out of it.
Just expect poor single-thread performance across the board, it's not even funny. It works wonders for the stuff I need it to, gaming and streaming at high quality for example is easy enough, encoding shit too as long as you feed it as many cores as available.
So I guess it's up to what you want to use it for.
Are there another chip with about the same performance you would recommend instead then?
The whole point is that it doesn't get great performance. Get an i5 4460 and H97 motherboard.
It's considerably more expensive, and only worth it if you're looking to overclock. Then you can push it up to 4.5ghz+
I'm thinking I want to get a wifi card/adapter/thingy to put in my desktop. The reason is all my ethernet cables+router etc. are on the bottom floor of my house, but I want to move my desktop into my room on the top floor. I could spend an entire day snaking a giant ethernet cable up through my floor and cutting a hole in my wall for an ethernet jack or I could just get a wifi card for my PC. Since I've never bought one, what should I look for? Should I try and get a cheap little USB thing, or something that I can plug straight into my motherboard? what kind of specifications should I be looking at?
just an update yeah turning off msaa in gtav made my fps go from 45-55 to 140 lol
MSAA is shit, it's always completely wrecked my framerate in any game
Hey guys, spilled a drink into my computer today and fried my ancient processor so I figure its time for some upgrades, but its been so long that I have some basic questions:
First question: Can I run my ancient Nvidia GTX 550 ti on a new mobo running something like a 990fx chipset? I want the ability to upgrade my graphics card to a 960/970 in the near future, but I just want a functioning computer with a dope processor for now.
Second question: Does this seem like an acceptable start while I save for a decent graphics card? http://pcpartpicker.com/p/rfzYZL
Third question: What problems should I expect to encounter by just implanting my current memory and hard drive into the new board? Current memory is 4x 2GB sticks of DDR3 (although I don't know what channel), and the harddrive is pretty standard but is all set to run on my current mobo/processor/video card, so I have no idea what drivers and BIOS issues await.
Also, is there any specific software setup side of a new processor/mobo besides the obvious of new drivers? I took my whole computer apart cleaning it today so I know I can handle the hardware side, but I have never actually built a computer from the ground up before.
I'm not looking to build anything colossal, I just figured that this is a good time to move on from my ancient 3ghz quad core, and maybe throw in a GTX 960 or 970 later.
I would get a different mobo. Not too familiar with amd cpu's to give you a fair judgement on them.
Your RAM and HDD should be fine when swapping everything. If anything I'd get an SSD as well, maybe 128 or 250 gigs for your OS and some programs and a few games.

I think they went over this pretty well on the last page, but there is a much better value in opting for an intel i5 4460 and an h97 motherboard. You're looking at spending like an extra 20 bucks maybe, but for a far, far better processor. The processor you have in your list there certainly wouldn't qualify as dope in my honest opinion.

Whoops, that was an old link, I'm looking at this mobo currently: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-m5a99fxpror20
Someone else was telling me I needed to have everything backed up since I'd have to be reinstalling Windows after the processor and mobo swap, but that doesn't seem logical to me. Is this accurate or is it just a matter of setting up the BIOS and that sort of thing?
SSD might come later, gotta work with my budget for now.

I play neither, the highest quality game I run is Red Orchestra 2, and I'll be playing GTA V once I replace the video card down the road. I'm pretty casual with my games since work and school eat up most of my time and budget.

I use an 8350. Yes, I spent £80 on a liquid cooling loop from Corsair, but I'm clocked at 4.6GHz stable. I'm doing just fine running, for instance, Arma 3 on high at a stable 60fps. CS:GO, I can run at 4k (via DSR) at 60+fps.
"Literally the worst choice?"
If you have the time, wait to see what DX12 does to the FX-series, because it could bridge the performance gap between the FX-8's and the i5's.
My friend with an overclocked watercooled 8350 has less than a 5% boost over my 4 core processor speed.
This is in cinebench with all cores used, and I'm using a laptop processor, even though it's an i7.
Don't touch the FX processors, their individual cores are weaker even when overclocked with watercooling, and they're not a good choice for actual multithreaded performance, where the i7 comes into play.
The 8350 is also weaker than a xeon e3-1231, so for the money you spent on an aio loop you could just run that at stock and still be more powerful in the multithreaded level.
Buying the inferior processor because unreleased software COULD make it up to scratch of the superior one isn't a good idea
cinebench
But this doesn't equal real world performance, at least in games.
i7
But then you've already spent double on just the CPU.

Yes, correct. But it's almost a lateral upgrade at that point.
Buying the inferior processor because unreleased software COULD make it up to scratch of the superior one isn't a good idea
Hence why I proposed they wait before buying if they have the patience.
I completely agree that the i5 is better than the FX-8's. But I dislike how it's completely shat all over. It's not as bad as it's made out to be.
I'm quite aware of what DX12 might do but it won't necessary make things run better if games can't take advantage of it.
And yes I have quite a few friends who complain about their AMD FX cpus who tried to play Arma 3 and have struggled to push past 30 fps.
Arma 3 is getting DX12 in the Tanoa upgrade.
As long as you don't put AMD gpus in AMD cpu systems you're generally fine.
Anandtech
Please don't use Anandtech or Tomshardware as a source. They use arbitrarily single-core threaded applications which obviously show Intel's better IPC.
There are TekSyndicate videos on this topic that disprove many (not all, I agree) of the benchmarks that you provided.
The videos also cover power consumption, too. That's not exactly the best argument against the FX chip.
Have a bonus video, too.
Edit: I'm not trying to say that Intel is bad, seriously. I'm sorry if it sounds that way.

laptop I7 please read
You can pick up refurbished thinkpads with similar i7s in them for dirt cheap. They aren't as pricey as their desktop variants.
The point is that it's getting outperformed by a laptop processor, which are always much weaker than their desktop variants.
Also Cinebench is an application that favours the AMD processor because it uses all threads, in real world applications the single thread of my i7 rolls over the 8350. So just saying, in a test biased towards non-real applications that favour the amd processor, it has a negligible lead over a laptop processor, and not in a premium laptop at all.
laptop I7 please read
Thankfully, the desktop processors are more powerful than their mobile counterparts.
For it not to be the case is why it's concerning on AMDs part
