I just got myself a Twin Frozr R9 390 and it's idling at 58c.
Is this normal? I've never had a graphics card before, but this seems a bit high.
Idle temps don't matter at all as long as it's not damaging. Load temps are all you need to worry about. A GPU can idle at 70c and load at 80c is be perfectly fine.

do i need to upgrade anything if i want to run some of the newer games?
Yeah, I used afterburner and as soon as it got to 66c it quickly dropped back around to 55c.

If you want that buttery smooth 60fps@1080/1440 then the gpu could use an upgrade. You should be able to run games like TW3 or GTA V at 30+ fps though provided you tweak some graphics settings. Also get on that ssd life friendo

would i have to replace the cpu or motherboard if i got like a gtx 970?
would i have to replace the cpu or motherboard if i got like a gtx 970?
Nope cpu and mobo should be fine. Assuming gaming is your primary purpose, most games are GPU intensive rather than cpu. There may be few situations where the cpu will bottleneck, but those moments should be very sparse and constitute a few frames at most.
Maybe if you play GTA V at max settings and turn the density sliders to the highest possible then you'll run into some trouble but that's a pretty extreme scenario
would i have to replace the cpu or motherboard if i got like a gtx 970?
Nope, you can probably just pop in a 970. What PSU do you have?
Nope, you can probably just pop in a 970. What PSU do you have?
corsair tx550m
Yeah you'll be perfectly good to just replace the 670 with a 970.
what about the ssd? Would this one be ok for like the operating system or should i just get a smaller one? http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VX82P38/ref=asc_df_B00VX82P383818363?&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=mysimon-pc03-20&linkCode=df0&creative=395093&creativeASIN=B00VX82P38
You're better off getting a Samsung 850 EVO, Crucial MX100 or MX200, or an Intel. Whatever is cheaper. And 120gb will be fine for just OS and some programs, but more is always better.
alright, thanks!
Note that if you get a 120gb ssd, that leaves pretty much no room for anything else. I'd personally recommend 240 gb or more if you can, simply because ssd loading times for games are amazing. Hell I have a 256gb ssd as my OS partition and I wish I had a 500gb one. Most modern AAA games seem to take up 40 gigs or more so a 256gb ssd barely seems to cut it now, let alone a 120gb one
Please could someone create a build for my dad? It's purely for multitasking and non-gaming but he requires an i7 and a 1440p monitor, so you could save money and not get a graphics card.
He won't require any peripherals, but a case, ssd (to run basic programs), hdd, etc.
Will this do the job?
I know the power supply is a bit overkill but in the future he could just add a GTX 960 or something and use it for gaming without needing to switch the PSU
Absolutely no point buying a supplementary CPU cooler/overclocking motherboard on a CPU that doesn't overclock. Either upgrade to the K version to overclock, or remove the overclocking motherboard and CPU cooler.
Rest is solid.

It isn't an overclocking motherboard though?

Assuming you are speaking of the build above. H97 cannot overclock so you cannot consider that an overclocking motherboard, in addition the CPU cooler is never a bad idea in terms of acoustics and increasing the lifespan of your components.

To be fair pretty much any temperature below tCase will lead to the same lifespan.
I should stop posting while tired.
My point with the CPU cooler stands.
Tbh, I'm really not a fan(excuse the terrible pun) of the stock Intel CPU cooler, Its just not good enough for an I7, I'd much rather be safe and get at least something that isn't the stock cooler. Admittedly, It's not 100% needed but it will run cooler and quieter for not much extra cost
I agree with Dawnkiller on the point that there's no real reason to run a aftermarket cooler on a non overclocked cpu. However, if you do decide you don't mind spending some extra money on a cooler, then try and get one that reduces noise more so than temps. There is no universe in which a non-overclocked cpu will ever hit TJmax unless you do something silly like forget the thermal paste

gonna need more info than just asking for the best gpu. all depends on what res you're playing on, what games you plan on playing, what your current system is, etc.

A big mix of games, I'll probably pick up JC3, I play some other triple As, a lot of emulation, a fair amount of indie games - Really pretty much every game overall
