Replaced my H212 Plus with a Corsair h100i with SP fans, its so much quieter and a fair bit colder.
is the gigabyte GA-Z97-HD3 a decent mobo or am i better off buying something more expensive
Looking for feedback on my custom build. I'm looking to do mainly gaming on it, with some Video editing and 3D modeling applications on it too.

Well you can't overclock with that motherboard, yet you're paying for an unlocked CPU and an aftermarket cooler. The GPU leaves some to be desired for sure. The case is pretty bad and the PSU isn't great quality either. Is about 700 your budget?

If you're looking to get into overclocking, you'll want something better. I'd suggest the Gigabyte Z98x-Gaming 5

I'm not looking to overclock. And I'm hoping to not have to pay much more than $700. Maybe $800?
This'll perform better and has better build quality/reliability

I've not been following the hardware game for a good while now, just wondering how much of an upgrade it would be to go from an i7 2600k & 480gtx to an i5 6600k & 970gtx?
This is probably what I'm going to be going for. Suggestions on matx cpu coolers & sleek looking cases would be lovely as I've no idea!

Those seem like good suggestions. How important is a motherboard in a gaming PC? And what don't you like about the case I picked?
Alright, so my second ASUS X99-A/USB3.1 also has the same issue. Since there has been no physical damage, I can actually return this one. I think my loyalty to ASUS is coming to an end since I've been having trouble with their motherboards and products lately. Can anyone recommend me an equivalent?

A quality motherboard is important just from a failure standpoint. But more importantly the B85 is not guaranteed to work out of the box with any of the Haswell refresh processors. And you need a regular Haswell processor to update the BIOS to be compatible.

Do you need 3.1? Because if so that basically limits you to ASUS or Asrock at the moment.
Do you need 3.1? Because if so that basically limits you to ASUS or Asrock at the moment.
I only got the USB 3.1 because it was the only X99-A that was on canadacomputers.com (It was cheaper to go to the store than to have it shipped from any site on pcpartspicker)
Unless there's any real performance improvements, (10 Gbit = 2x5Gbit?) then I don't really think it's necessary.
Is there any particular situation where I would benefit from 2x the USB speed?

I mean I guess you'd benefit if you had a 3.1 storage device, but you'd have to have some damn fast flash memory. Like a 3.1 SSD.

You could always get a pcie adapter if you really want usb3.1 or type c

Its really bare bones but if its a deal breaker it'll do fine.
that game doesnt need an i7, like levelog said.
your i5 can handle probably any game for the next few years, even more if you overclock it.
I'm just using the stock fan setup with my cpu right now, but I have a slightly older model of this;

If I were to OC it, something I've always been scared to do, would that cooler be enough or should I get something more significant?

the stock cooler can't handle much of and overclock tbh, that slightly older model cooler master should do you fine for an overclock
is the cooler necessary?
Nah. Get a 212 if you want to knock the price down but don't expect very much OC'ing
It really won't. The TX3 is a barely better than stock cooler that really isn't meant for overclocking. I replace any garbage AMD stock cooler with them.

212?
what kinda things do I keep on an ssd rather than an hdd?
My desktop has to cool an AMD Phenom II X4 965 and its a bit too noisy under even moderately heavy loads.
Any recommendations for quiet cooling?
what kinda things do I keep on an ssd rather than an hdd?
OS
if you edit photos or videos I'd keep them on there while you work on them, then move them to an HDD when you're done
games you play a lot that have long load times

No reason to upgrade the CPU for any game.
That motherboard is retardedly expensive.
Get a crucial/samsung/intel ssd.
More importantly, will the 970 fit in the MicroATX case?
Looking for a good PC around ~£500
It does not need an SSD or HDD as I already have them.
