I'm pretty set on the 4790K now seeing as I don't plan on upgrading for a looooong time. Looking at prices, the 500R and a better HSF won't be much of a stretch. What would you recommend?
doesn't matter, you can't future proof processors. sandys are still a very good for their age. ivy is still amazing too. point is, a 4790k is going to be no more beneficial over a 4690k for gaming, and this plan for waiting for an upgrade will make no difference down the line. unless you get into video editing, rendering or any program that can actually take use of an i7.
companies know exactly when people buy stuff so they can push out the latest right after they do it
Gonna be building a beast of a computer in the least amount of space possible over the next few years, Budget is ~$2500, I'm gonna be using it for gaming, modeling, programming, and multitasking, Any suggestions? Change the power supply otherwise it's good imo
with that budget, just go skylake imo.
with that budget, just go skylake imo.
I wonder if there are any micro itx z170 boards yet. Probably going to try and get this (or a newer model) around christmas time. What do you all think? http://www.amazon.com/AOC-G2770PQU-Ultimate-Performance-Professional/dp/B00L8LTB3W/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1440179264&sr=1-2&keywords=1080p+144hz%5C
This might be a silly question. The two cheapest 980s I can find are manufactured by Gigabyte and Asus. Is there any noteworthy difference between these or should I just go for the cheaper option?

Eh, I really don't like 1080p at 27 inches. Even 24 is stretching it. [editline]21st August 2015[/editline] The Strix is actually a pretty solid cooler for once, but I'd still go with the gigabyte.

Does anyone have any issues with the AMD 970 gaming motherboards? I just put mine in and it keeps telling me windows didnt open correctly and that I should do a system restore.
Going to shove this to this page [editline]21st August 2015[/editline] It's never smart to get something just because it's cheaper, though if anything i'd get the gigabyte one
Get the Strix it's worth 50 pounds more and is on a sale. With GPUs the cheaper you go you're only going to get down to reference cards, which isn't the end of the world. Interestingly the cheapest 980ti has equivalent performance to ones that cost 70-80 pounds more as it actually has a fantastic cooler on it
The Windforce should cool better, but the Strix is quieter. So up to you. Definitely the windforce if you plan on overclocking at all, which I highly recommend. The MSI Twin Frozr is actually the same price as the Strix though, so I'd recommend that over either.
Looking to upgrade my poor old Phenom II 955 in the next couple of weeks. I was looking at getting an i5-4460, but I have two questions first. How much of an improvement would the newer processor tech afford me if I have my 955 overclocked to 3.8 GHz over the stock 3.2, and what mobo is the best value/most reliable to get with it?
Before I cock something up, if I put 1600 MHz RAM with a CPU that only supports up to 1333, it will just downclock to 1333 right?
Before I cock something up, if I put 1600 MHz RAM with a CPU that only supports up to 1333, it will just downclock to 1333 right?
Yes.

Build quality, display, all top notch. And 144hz is great, I can't go back to 60hz
Do you guys think a single gtx 980ti would be able to run 2-3 (preferably 3) Asus rog swifts (1440p, 144hz, g-sync) fine? Or will I have to sli/get a titan x?
if you're using surround you need SLI
Thanks, now I gotta find a mini-itx board with 2 pci-e3 slots (which are probably few and far between/nonexistant) Edit: I just realized the corsair 250d doesn't have 2 gpu bays/holes/whatever-the-fuck-theyre-called-because-i-cant-remember for a reason, because if there were mini itx boards with 2 pci slots the 250d would probably support it
Woops I missed this thread the other day, any thoughts on the SG10 and SG12 cases? Thinking about one for my mATX build.
M-ATX yes Mini ITX never
This is why DTX needs to come back.
I got Asus gtx 970 and currently I have not so trustworthy PSU Aerocool Strike-X 600w. Can you recommend me some decent enough to not be really expensive PSU 600+ PSU (can't tell budget, because local currency kinda unstable). EVGA and XFX are not available here.

A bit offtopic: How bad Aerocool Strike-X power supplies are? And what kind of problems I can expect from that kind of "quality" power supplies.

You can expect potential outright failure, improper voltage and fluctuation that can decrease your other part's lifespan, with very high load perhaps even a catastrophic failure that can take out other components.
