i7-4770K or i5-4690K i do wanna oc, i also do video rendering/editing/recording but only very occasionally
if you think you're going to be doing a lot of cpu heavy stuff like rendering, editing & lots of multitasking, the i7 is probably your better bet, but the i5-4690k will still do the job pretty nicely. if you really are just going to be doing it only occasionally then it's not worth the +$100 going with the i7.
if you do grab an i7 though, I'm pretty sure you can get the i7-4790k for the same price or less than the 4770k

I thought I remember you posting that they were shit. may have been mistaken.

The other half of their models are pretty bad.
This is a sort of personal PC building question. Does it deserve its own thread?
I'm starting to want to build my own desktop since I'm tired of my 2011 Asus laptop. I already have all the keyboard-mouse-monitor stuff (thank god), so it's really a matter of getting the actual computer built. My budget's somewhere between the OP's $750 and $1000 recommended builds. Things like RAM, motherboard, CPU and HDD are more important to me than the GPU since I'm not playing that many games anymore, and I just need a well-performing mid-budget Radeon of some sort for video/photo editing and streaming. I figure if I spend the extra bucks on a good backbone, I can get a top-of-the-line GPU later on when I have more saved up. My main question is what products do you recommend for a PC that prioritizes processing and memory power somewhat over graphics power? I've already decided on the case, the Corsair Carbide compact GTX. Again, my biggest priorities are processing power, memory, and good ventilation.
Sorry if this is too much to ask, I'm just a little lost. I know what the parts all do, I just don't really know how to choose specific items over others and I need a bit of a hand.

I put these parts together for a friend of mine with a low budget. He's going to use my old Radeon HD6870 until he can afford a better card.
Is there anything bad in this list that I should swap?
Debating whether or not to upgrade or build a new PC.

Not sure how the i7 920 is nowadays. I want to be able to run GTA V on Med/High at a reasonable FPS. Right now I'm on lowest everything at 1080p and get 30fps after the latest update.
I want to replace the GPU, CPU Cooler, and maybe the RAM. Not entirely sure though.
If you're comfortable with overclocking, pick up a good cooler, a Xeon X5660 for $75, and a 970.

Something like this with that Xeon would do very well, dunno what your budget is though. You could also opt to get a full new skylake setup.

I'm more worried about those temps. Were you running anything particularly taxing at the time? :v:
what's the best non-Skylake/X99 socket

Budget for an upgrade would only be $300 or so. Going to go with building a new MicroATX computer, I'll post a parts list here in a few. Also it's an i7, not a Xeon.
I'm more worried about those temps. Were you running anything particularly taxing at the time? :v:
Nope, just the desktop and one YouTube tab! Makes a great heater, though.
What I was saying is to pick up the Xeon I listed.
Oh, whoops.
Building a whole new system though on a $300 budget isn't going to happen.
That's his budget for an upgrade though. Maybe his new pc budget is different.
I'm looking for DDR4 memory to use, but I noticed the high amount of latency compared to what I have seen in DDR3, should I just ignore it?
I'm looking for DDR4 memory to use, but I noticed the high amount of latency compared to what I have seen in DDR3, should I just ignore it?
Wait another year or two
I'm looking for DDR4 memory to use, but I noticed the high amount of latency compared to what I have seen in DDR3, should I just ignore it?
CAS Latency is a relative latency, not an absolute constant. CL 14 on DDR3 and CL 14 on DDR4 are not the same hard thing.
I'd like a new modular PSU to power my GTX 970 so I can use my old one for a rebuild.
Is a XFX P1-550B-BEFX 550w XTR Gold Fully Modular Power Supply Unit the right sort of thing?

Yep, great unit.
For some reason my r9 270x's fans won't rotate. Any ideas what could be causing this and what aftermarket cooler should I get?
if its not under load then it's probably not going to turn on
throw it under load
lmao it'll go to 103c playing minecraft and 94c playing eu4
oh dear god
get msi afterburner, force fan speed

[editline]22nd September 2015[/editline]
if you can't start the fans after that, update drivers to latest and if that doesn't; work RMA it
Will MSI Afterburner work on a non-MSI card? I have Sapphire and I'm using Trixx but it hasn't done anything
Afterburner did nothing either. The kicker is I bought this thing on ebay
shit
unless it was advertised that the fans weren't working i'd get your money back dude
also check on the card that the actual fan pin is connected
I don't see anything
which model of 270x is it?
sapphire dual x r9 270x 2gb
pull it out, check if this is plugged in, if it is, and it sold to you as working(as in they didn't describe any faults on the ebay listing) get your money back
Had to adjust the little cable but it worked
now my PC sounds like the jet engine it's supposed to be
yeah just use afterburner to set a custom fan curve so it's silent during no load but the fans are working under load and not like a jet engine
[editline]22nd September 2015[/editline]
glad to know it's working now
Alright, ill do that
thanks man
Hey guys, havent had a pc for ages, but cant fork out ridiculous amounts of cash.
SPECS:
AMD FX-6100 3.8GHz Six Core CPU
16GB 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM
1TB Hard Drive Storage Space
ATI Radeon HD 6670 2GB Graphics Card
High Performance USB3.0 Motherboard
Hows this for £250? Thoughts? Can I upgrade it to awesomeness?
Planetside 2, dota 2, space engineers.
Not exactly going for ultra 60 fps but they should run?
Im just looking for a good Base starter, I wont be throttled too hard by other components if I get a modern gpu?
