I'm looking at buying a 4790K for my new PC -- what are a few motherboards that won't need me to update the BIOS for them? I don't have a PC I can take the processor out of to flash the BIOS so it's a little bit of a pain
Any Z97 one. Or H97.
I need an SSD for windows only (so doesn't have to be big - 60gb will do).
What one should I get? Looking to spend <$100 AUD
Generally I shop at MSY because it's cheaper.
Looking at this one at the moment: http://www.msy.com.au/qldonline/hard-drive/14414-sandisk-ultra-ii-sdssdhii-120g-q25-120g-sata3-ssd-solid-state-drive.html
I'd go for an MX100 but they cost too much here. I already have an 850 EVO I'm happy with, but I want something a little cheaper as I am only using this for the operating system and microsoft office, my 850 EVO will be used for a couple of games.

You generally don't want to go under 120 gigs because drives under that are usually very unreliable
my brother gave me this pre-built computer that he had since i was in need of one and i'm just wondering what would be the best way to upgrade the build for around $200-$300 to improve gameplay performance
any suggestions?
it won't be a grand experience with PS2 or SE but dota 2 should be decent enough
i'd really aim for a new gpu with that rig as soon as u can, cpu is good enough for now but it could be better but that's your budget limitting you
Planetside 2 is now quite well multithreaded, to the point where I'm GPU-bottlenecked on my 8350... I'm not sure what that really means for the 6100, but if your budget limits you to that, I would see if you could get an aftermarket cooler and overclock.
Really all he needs is a bigger GPU and it's fine for most games.
Yep, I agree. It's worth checking the secondhand market, especially for AMD GPUs (mainly because nVidia's cards hold higher prices for longer).
I could always push 60+ except for those massive battles where I dropped down to 45ish. This was on high too. From what I've heard they've done pretty good work on the optimization. Too bad that's the only part of the game they've worked on.

Look in to a 750 Ti

For $2-300? That's on the low end of the budget. Pick up a 4gb R9 380 or R9 290.
Can anyone recommend me a compatibal gpu for this system I can set my sights on? Im a little nervous the one I get wont fit or whatnot (not too schooled on hardware compatibility)
I think I'm in the right thread, but if I'm not sorry.
I am looking to buy a nice new monitor. Currently have a 19 inch screen but I want to upgrade. After working on a 27 inch, programming on that is just a pain in the ass. Plus I wanna get back on that dual monitor horse.
Price is not that big of an issue, under 400 if possible but I can go over if there's a really nice feature. I also want 144 hz, or whatever the standard is for high refresh rates is nowadays.
Also, gsync/freesync? I have no idea. I don't even remember what card I have right now, but it's certainly a geforce. GTX 660? I am really not sure, haven't upgraded my computer in a couple of years.
Any help would be appreciated.

Oh shit, I didn't mention I would like a 24 inch. The 144hz is a big want too.

Oh, you said 27 inch so I assumed you wanted one of them

This monitor has server me well, and meets your specifications.

You're gonna wanna get a Display Port cable, assuming your graphics card supports it.
I should warn you though, this monitor can be annoying at times. If you try to switch between presets, it sometimes switches back and forth between them, making you press the button again until it stays. Other than that, I've felt good about it.
If you aren't looking for ~features~ and just want the basic 144hz and 24 inches, then you should probably just go with Sand Castle's recommendation. It's cheaper and suits your needs.
or kiwi's 2nd link
I'm in Canada so prices seem to be varying greatly. Is there a difference between display port and DVI? Shit, I might update my gfx card too it seems if it's a big deal.

There is, but you can just get a DisplayPort to DVI adapter for little money

i don't think a displayport to dual link dvi adaptor exists though. one of the reasons why I didn't end up with the acer.

Looks like they do exist but are 'spensive, huh
WTF Nuke, can you find out what GPU you have
It kinda depends on your monitor too. There is no DP to DVI adapter that can handle like more than 85hz for the korean overclockable monitors.
Yup just got home, it's a GTX 660. I think it has display port port. It has HDMI and some other port, all port like in appearance. Probably used for porting. I think it's a display port port.
Is it this?

Yup that's it!
So I'm wanting to upgrade my 2 gtx 760's in SLI to 1 gtx 970 but I'm wanting to make sure I can meet the power plug requirements. The 970 requires one six pin and one eight pin plug, but my PSU only has 6 pin and 2 pin plugs. Can I use one six pin in one plug, and then one six pin with an auxillary 2 pin plug in the 8 pin slot on the card? Sorry if I'm wording this weird, it's weird to describe/explain.
you mean 6+2?
like one of these?

if so you'll be fine
My usb 3.0 header pins are bent out of belief, is there an alternative so I can use the ports in the front of my case?
There are PCIe cards, that's about it.
There are PCIe cards, that's about it.
I've seen a USB 3 PCIe card from Rosewill(?) but I forgot what the hell it was called
Decided to go with building a new PC. I have hard drives already and I would like to be able to upgrade the GPU and RAM when the time comes. Any recommendations?

Budget is $650 at most. Only problem being that I'm going to slowly buy these parts throughout the rest of the year. Can't really change that.
