Any real danger with used CPUs? I'm getting an i7 4790 with its cooler completely free, but I'm taking it out of a relatively new workstation. Sadly not a 4790K, but I can't complain.

Actually it's an i7-4770. That will still be fine today as long as I get the right mobo, right?
Because he's banned, LegoGuy wanted me to post on his behalf:
ARitz Cracker: Can you post this in the PC Building thread? http://www.lian-li.com/en/dt_portfolio/pc-o7s/ That case is almost prefect, except I need at least 1 5.25" drive. It's an absolute must. Another requirement is that I must have 3 120mm fans in a row for my radiator. Can anyone help me find the perfect case? ARitz Cracker: Mention that LegoGuy/ARitz Cracker wants that

Okay so it seems i lag when theres a full server of 20-30 people in the game, so many particles and models for tf2 and gmod. still it would be nice to upgrade my computer in ways that could probably stop me from lagging in servers like that have more than like 10-15 people in it. i just hope to god it isnt my graphics card, i just got it 2-3 months ago :mindblown:
Does your FPS actually drop or can it also be server lag? Well your your GPU is 3 years old.(But you bought it 3 months ago?) But should still run tf2 or any source game, maxxed out. Have you actually plugged in your screen to the GPU and not the Motherboard? Are your drivers up to date?
Posted this in another thread before noticing this one, but I'm giving my PC a pretty major upgrade as it's currently running on a Phenom 955B and GTX 460. Does this seem OK? I was trying to keep it below £700, I already have things like a case and hard drive and DDR4 and Skylake means the system is kinda future proofed.
what are you doing
R9 380's a better pick over the GTX 960. Some games (GTA V) will have literally a frame better on the 960, but games where the R9 380 comes out on top (Witcher 3, especially Far Cry 4, GRID) it's usually by a much bigger margin (nearly 50% in Far Cry 4). If it's not CPU bottlenecked at 1080p it performs better. Oh, and the GTX 960 he listed is a blower card, so if there's any doubt about not needing extra fans on that case, it's there, there will be no change in temperatures on that GPU and a better CPU cooler saving money from the fans would do better. Skylake's premium cost over Devil's canyon doesn't match well to performance boost, particularly for games. It's a tiny increase in CPU performance, the main reason to consider it is new features such as DDR4 support and m.2 becoming more standard. On a build with more budget the performance increase could be worth it but not on a build with a 960 as a choice GPU, devil's canyon would not be a bottlenecking factor. Buying an NH-D15 for example with the money saved from the switch to Devil's Canyon would allow for a cooler that will work in the future: adapter packs are released by Noctua with new boards. An even better option would be to use saved money from not getting the extra case fans + using devil's canyon to get a better GPU. Sticking lots of fans on an mATX case just makes it louder, anything more than a single intake on the front and a rear outtake and you will struggle to see any difference. 250GB is a slightly small SSD, depends on what's put on it, newer games + OS + main programs can quickly eat it up though. If there's no budget to get a 500 then obviously there's no way around it. Backblaze's examples aren't definitive because they're not actually tests and not all their drives are treated equal (they also say this), but it's also difficult to find actual data on this, doesn't help that backblaze has made a lot of those articles. You can get a seagate if you want, though I'd personally like a proper test that attests in their favour before I'd consider their quality compared to WD. Extremely difficult to get a test like this, seeing as you'd need a reviewer with some 1000 hard drives or so running them for years.
i dont even know where to begin, so much wrong in that statement.
i dont even know where to begin, so much wrong in that statement.
He's got valid points for his first few.
Ehh, didn't say all was wrong.
i got that GPU recommended, but drivers are up to date, and yea whenever im in a server with tons and tons of people i tend to go from 80fps to 40-20 fps
-What is the max temperature you see on the CPU/GPU while these drops are happening (Download HW monitor). -Try clearing your tf2 steam cache as well. -Make sure you have plugged in the screen to the GPU and not the motherboard.
Hello all, I am looking for some advice on upgrading my computer PSU Corsair cx500 it was a prebuilt from Cyberpower currently It can play games like Diablo 3, Subnautica, the Forest in the lower settings without frame problems, I would like to be able to run these games in higher settings. So I am thinking about getting a gtx 950 but I am unsure if this is wise will this even work? I have 200£ to spend on upgrades thus the 950. Thanks.
You can do more than a 950 with 200. I'd recommend upgrading to an 8gb kit too. Well, I have had it for 2 years, but it was my brothers before me so it probably pushing 4 years. replace it?
Seems like CPU and GPU are at their regular temps when framedrops happen. My GPU is plugged into the screen, and clearning cache doesnt help.
Hmm, maybe that CPU is too slow for tf2 afer all. (Source really favors single core performance) Does your CPU/GPU/RAM usage shoot up to 100% when the framedrops happen?

But I can wait a while - I was just thinking it would be better money-wise to space out the spending over a few months.
Drop down to an H97 motherboard and keep the 4590.
Hey everyone, I'm looking to build a ~400-500$ small form factor that can handle some games as well. My "games" computer has a GT 630, so anything's an upgrade at this point. I can't even run half my steam library. Pitiful, right? The height of the place it'll be is about ~6 inches, so I don't think it'll be that much of an issue.
