I came from 8.1 and got the free upgrade to 10. If I were to upgrade my motherboard (for new cpu, ram, etc.) would I be able to simply clean install windows 10 with their downloadable media version or would I need to buy a new copy of windows?
You'd have to buy windows but I think there are loopholes. I don't know them though.
You should be able to contact Microsoft Support through the support app and they will activate it for you. No guarantees though. http://www.howtogeek.com/226510/how-to-use-your-free-windows-10-license-after-changing-your-pc%E2%80%99s-hardware/ Haven't done it myself so I don't know if it still or ever worked.
Since my PC's basically falling apart (I don't know why, but it's gone through hell of a lot of abuse and most of the ports on the damn thing are broken) and it's not great for upgrade-ability, might make a new build instead from scratch. I have £720 left over after accommodation fees from my uni budget - I have a job to pay for food etc and also have savings as backup money so I'm good financially. What do you guys think?
Get an aftermarket CPU heat sink for the CPU or it will run hot won't last as long and you won't be able to overclock it. You should try the cooler master hyper 212 evo which is a great inexpensive heat sink that will help you decently overclock and cool your CPU.

Hey guys, I put together a build for my friend. She has a 629$ hard budget, and there's like a 9% sales tax in her state. Build is for gaming and photoshop. Here's what I came up with: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/BfdYjX Its $582 after tax, and probably closer to $600 with shipping. Gonna get Windows by other means, and she has an external HDD so the 250gb SSD should be fine for installed stuff. Is there anything obvious I've missed or some better parts available?
I take it peripherals are all taken care of (keyboard and mice and all that). The only thing I'd change is the 8gb stick to 2 4gb sticks unless you're planning to upgrade. That way, you are not holding your eggs in one basket and can still use one RAM stick if the other fails. Bear in mind that the AMD processor will only be worth if it she plans on utilising all of them, the games and Photoshop work she'll be doing should be decently heavy, because AMD processors have pretty poor single-core performance compared to Intel. If she won't get use of all 6 cores, then it'll be better to get an equivalent i3.
Was wondering if anyone had any critique on this build, been a while since I've done this! Mouse, keyboard, other peripherals are already taken care of. Have some flexibility on budget so open to upgrades if warranted

You can get 2TB and an SSD for that price.
I won't complain much however if you like the "convenience" features NVIDIA offers such as ShadowPlay and decide to stick with the 970, but if you're wanting to do things at 1440p or 4K, the R9 390 is a quite compelling alternative.
AMD cards have had very similar features for a while now, so not having ShadowPlay isn't really a problem since you'll have the AMD alternative.
Current Specs: CPU: i5 4690k @ 4.6 GHz RAM: 16 GB @ 1600 MHz CL9 Motherboard: Some Z97 GIGABYTE (ATX). GPU: GTX 970 Asus Cooling: Corsair h100i I am considering getting another GTX 970 but not sure if that's the way to go (A bit struggling with 3 monitors, in games playing on 2560x1080 monitor FPS is sometimes unsteady) Would it be better if I say sell 970 and get two other cards? Like two AMD's or something? (I know nothing about AMD GPU's). Also anyone can suggest good big ATX case with side window? (Around 100-150 Euro for case)
Why not sell your current 970 and put it with the money and get a 980/980 Ti?
It's possible that I might have more than 4 monitors soon, so I need to SLI to get more connection ports.

Hey, looking for a new MoBo to replace my busted old P8Z77-V CPU: i5 3570K GPU:AMD 7970HD RAM:8GB Nothing fancy needed, just something that'll do the job for gaming.
just double 970s over getting a 980 or 980 ti honestly thats a huge performance gain and the cards almost scale 100% it's dumb crazy [editline]15th October 2015[/editline] what happened ot your p8z77-v? also im not gonna lie http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-p8z77vlx this is the only z77 i could find with out going ebay
Oh I don't mean replacement Z77 in particular, just any MoBo that'll be compatible with my CPU/GPU and is good enough for gaming. No idea, kept breaking at VGA while doing POST, after multiple attempts to fix it, unplugging my GPU and using it elsewhere fine and an RMA the supplier ended up just refunding me. Had it going for around 2 years as well.
Ah okay. How soon?
In the next 2-3 months probably.

Hey guys I'm not really good with the whole building a pc yourself stuff (and I'm not looking to atm), could any of you recommend good prebuilts around $1000? I just want to get something that will let me enjoy most next gen games on high settings, but I'm willing to shell out a little more for a 970.

Is ibuypower a good site to go through? [editline]14th October 2015[/editline] again not really looking to do much myself here, I just want to get a decent machine to play on with little to no effort on my part. :v:
If you want to keep your overclocking potential you have a choice of a Z77, Z77 or a Z77. + Some freak H series boards with overclocking.
Oh right well that sorts that out I guess. I assume my only other option is upgrading my CPU as well then?
Upgrade time going for a GTX 950 @ $160 unless anyone knows of a better deal? has to be 6pin, and $160 is the final max.
Oh right well that sorts that out I guess. I assume my only other option is upgrading my CPU as well then?
Yep. But even the newest Intel CPU (6600k) isn't really all that much faster than your 3570k. I would try and get a cheap z77 board somewhere instead. Maybe even second hand.
Is it okay to get a $80-90 ATX motherboard with an i5-4690? I honestly still don't really know what to look for in a mobo, but most at Micro Center are at least $100. As long as it has decent reviews and the right ports, there's not much else to consider, right? I'm still a noob with this stuff.
Does this look alright to you guys? [t]http://i.imgur.com/raXytnJ.png[/t] I'd appreciate any suggestions for saving a few bucks with this on ibuypower. [editline]w[/editline]
Like the guy above you said, go to Dell and configure a decent enough home/office PC -- you'll get scammed out of less money that way.
I can't find any option to configure anything on their site and all of their stuff has a 300w psu and comes with windows 8/10, which I'm trying to avoid for now.
Anybody bought a laptop from PC Specialist? As far as I know they build or refurbish Sager laptops and shit. I want a decent gaming laptop and they seem to have decent prices.
