I'm looking for some advice. In my currect pc, I have an Athlon II X4 640 cpu, 8GBs RAM, and a GTX 460 768mb. The parts I have picked out right now are an Intel i5 4690 + a new motherboard that'll house it, and an MSI R9 380. I don't have enough money to buy all the parts at once, so the best I can do is buy them piece by piece. Which do you think would be the best to start with? Either way I'll be bottlenecked by either my processor or my GPU, but which should I upgrade first to give me the most immediate improvement on performance?
Honestly it's a tough call. I guess it depends. How long is the piece by piece going to be?

probably over 2-4 months overall. I would have to be stingy with my spending to get all of it, I'm actually considering getting a credit card just so I can do monthly payments instead. Unless newegg offers some sort of payment plan :v:
I'd get the GPU honestly first.
that's what I was thinking, but a lot of games are messing around with higher CPU requirements, like Fallout 4 and GTA V, which both say you need at least an i5 to run them.
if you already have the 212 evo just get the 6700k and mobo+ram
also your 980's temps? nah wouldn't; worry about them unless you wanted to include them in a custom cpu water cooling loop
Yeah nah, if I can avoid it I'd rather just stick with what I've got.
and nah we're into ddr4 now
god dammit
you can get skylake boards with ddr3 if you wanna swap it out and not spend the extra
Ugh, do you think it'll be worth it to just go DDR4? I'm not sure how often this shit changes but every time I've upgraded my mobo I've had to get new RAM. Then again, I doubt I'll be needing to change anything after this for a very long time. Then AGAIN, that's what I said last time.
What would be a better upgrade then the GPU or the CPU? I am looking into doing some upgrading.
If you have an Intel pentium 1 with an nvidia GTX 980 then I would say the CPU.
If you have an Intel core i7-6700K with a Nvidia 6600GT I would say the GPU.

DDR4 really isn't that much more expensive than DDR3 to be honest.
DDR3 lasted from like 2009 until 2014 so it's farely safe to go with
I doubt you'll notice any performance difference between a simple 8 or 16 gigs of DDR4 versus DDR3

Right but if he ever wants to upgrade his processor/motherboard a few years from now he won't be able to swap over his DIMMs
True. But at that point he'd probably want some faster ram regardless.
that's what I was thinking, but a lot of games are messing around with higher CPU requirements, like Fallout 4 and GTA V, which both say you need at least an i5 to run them.
Yeah GPU first. If it was going to be over the course of a year, I'd say CPU because GPU tech changes a lot faster, but a few months is negligible.
What's a decent mid tower case that'll fit a 760 and a Corsair heatsink with usb 2.0 front panel ports? Not really looking to spending a whole lot. Maybe $100 USD max. Something that doesn't weigh a ton either.
Reposting for new page.

What heat sink?
Corsair h80. The old one.

I have a 3570k and a gtx 770
Well, guess I gotta put upgrading on hold yet again. My hard drive won't let me reset. It's old and slow as balls so I don't think I'm gonna be fucked with fixing it, I'll just buy an SSD.
Can I get feedback on this?

Way overkill PSU. Sweetspot is around 70/80% load. Get a 500W SeaSonic

I'd get an i5 and use the extra money to get a 980 over the 970 tbh
Should any 6 pin PCIE cable work with my brother's GPU and PSU? He threw his away and used Molex connectors instead
Anyone else have that curse where no matter what PC they buy or build, one of the fans inside starts rattling within weeks of being used?
Anyone else have that curse where no matter what PC they buy or build, one of the fans inside starts rattling within weeks of being used?
Never had it happen to the fans that come with cases or on components, only on the $2 (for 2) Chinese fans I got. Even then it's intermittent.

Don't get a 970, get a R9 390 instead if you're not going to go for the 980.
Thoughts on this PSU? Posted this on /r/buildapc and they recommended a SeaSonic. I've managed to snag the CPU and HDDs for free, so don't need to worry about those.

how the hell did you manage a free i7 and two hard drives?
how the hell did you manage a free i7 and two hard drives?
My dad's workplace was getting rid of a basically unused workstation, and it had the 4770 with some terrible generic HP cooler in it, hence the aftermarket. The hard drives were used for a short period in their file server before they were wiped and replaced with 4TB ones a month later.
Not going to complain one bit about having to spend some money on a cooler, though.
With all that money you saved I'd go for one hell of a graphics card if you can afford it.

He should also get an 850 EVO
I have a 3570k and a gtx 770
Your CPU is fine, a 300$ upgrade will get you about 10% more performance.
Your GPU is semi fine, a 300$ upgrade will net you 25-35% more performance.
However, the 770GTX will still run most games maxxed out. Only really heavy games like the witcher 3, GTA IV, will fall below 40 fps on it. (ultra, 1080P)
So really ask yourself if you need to upgrade.
Also note that games like Arma III run shit on everything. An upgrade wont help much.
He should also get an 850 EVO
I hope to!

Don't have enough to upgrade the gpu unless there is a hell of a deal on a 290X/390X. 980ti or whatever is totally out, though.
