Are hybrid HDD/SSDs gimmicky or do they actually hold merit?
Are hybrid HDD/SSDs gimmicky or do they actually hold merit?
Gimmick.
Are hybrid HDD/SSDs gimmicky or do they actually hold merit?
Woah, a thing exists? who would thought that would be a good idea?
Woah, a thing exists? who would thought that would be a good idea?
Might be ok for people who can't be bothered prioritising what's on their SSD. Doubt it would do much to help with boot times since they would get wiped from the cache pretty quick.
Its meant to partition a small bit for OS and the rest for the rest of your shit.
Are hybrid HDD/SSDs gimmicky or do they actually hold merit?
Total gimmick, I have one in my laptop and its just as slow as a 5400 rpm HDD.
Adding faster parts to a slower system will do nothing to improve it. A computer is only ever as fast as its slowest part. It's the same as buying 2400Mhz RAM when your motherboard only supports 1600MHz, you're just wasting money.
How Apple used to do hybrid drives was the right way, but apparently they changed it to be shitty.
Alright, so I'm moving from an old AMD rig and want to jump onto a new build. I do video editing in After Effects and occasional gaming, as well as a lot of 3DS Max work. I can recycle my 750W power supply and my graphics card into the new system. However, I've never fully built a system before so I am not sure what to look for when it comes to choosing a motherboard, and I think I could use some recommendations for a cooler and a case. CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($268.99 whenever I can catch the low price) CPU Cooler: TBD, prefer something mostly passive because I can't stand the noise my fan makes Motherboard: TBD, I've never bought a motherboard before Memory: Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory ($88.99) Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($93) Video Card: EVGA GeForce 560 Ti (recycled) Case: TBD, nothing complicated, prefer a viewing window and I'm currently interested in cube cases (but any suggestions would be nice) Power Supply: Cooler Master 750W Modular (recycled) I think my budget overall would be around $700, but if you can find a good yet cheap recommendation for the TBD parts, I'll take a look at them.

Which makes an absolutely tremendous difference if, for instance, your computer uses an APU which is restricted by memory speed.

The slowest part just limits the performance in the area that the particular part is usefull for. Having a shit GPU, will allow you to browse the web at maximum speed, if your CPU is good enough. Having only 4 GB of slow RAM doesnt cause games to slow down, it only limits multitasking. You have the same FPS on an HDD as an SSD only loading times are longer. Motherboards usually have an only 1-2% impact on overall performance.
Hey so, after like 4 years of saying "I'm going to build a new PC soon" I'm finally able to afford to build a PC. I didn't majorly fuck up with this build did I? I know the PSU is too high wattage but I'm planning on keeping up with technology and adding a few more hard drives and a SSD in the future. I've also had problems in the past with PSUs that were 'good enough' not being good enough for very long. No thanks), none of the PC Part Picker suggested websites were good for buying shit from Ireland so I'm going with hardwareversand.de, which was suggested to me in the Irish Chat thread and is significantly cheaper and more up to date than the Irish and German websites I've looked at so far. Just to be safe, and because PC Part Picker doesn't list the same parts as hardwareversand I'll link to the parts there. Like it doesn't list the case I'm thinking of getting. I don't understand how you guys can stand not having the with tax price being displayed until you're at the checkout. Anyway, did I completely fuck up? Are there any good ways to drop the price (like a good PSU)?
You need a cpu cooler since intel no longer provides stock ones for you.
Looks really solid besides the case. I'd strongly suggest getting a better quality one. As far as dropping the PSU goes, replace it with this one.

Thanks guys. I'll look for reviews of the NZXT and the Corsair and see which one seems best for me.
I didn't see the Source 210 in my quick look of the website you gave, but if you find it go with that over the Corsair. Both of these cases are rather easy to work with, they look quite fine, and they'll fit pretty much anything you dare to throw in them. It's really just a matter of which one you can find cheaper.
They look pretty good for my build too, so thanks for pointing those out. What should I keep in mind when shopping for a motherboard other than socket type, PCI slots, ports on the back, and RAM slots? I guess what I'm trying to ask is "what separates a shit quality motherboard from a decent quality one when they look like they have similar features?"

Get a B or H series board made by MSI. ASUS if you can find a good deal on one.
I might actually be interested in overclocking. If I get into that, what mobo would you recommend?
Would the GA-Z170 be alright? It looks like a great board and it fits my budget nicely. This entry specifically: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B012AQGL4A/
What are yall thoughts on case pressure (positive vs. negative)? I've got a CoolerMaster Pro 5 case, the radiator for my GTX 980Ti is where the exhaust fan was, and I'm putting a 240mm radiator in the case top for my cpu. I was thinking about flipping the two fans on the front of the case to run positive pressure so that my rad fans will get more air to push. Any thoughts?
