I have 10 USB ports on my current mobo, plus 4 front panel ports. I use 9 of those rear and am often using at least one of those front panel ones and often use two. This is like the bare minimum I can get away with. And yes, I am using hubs on those. The SATA is also wonderful to have. I don't stop using drives if they arent dead. I still have a 400GB from 2008 in my PC. I just added a spare Intel 520 180GB I had too. SATA is very easy to use. I also am very good at using PCI-E, at minimum I have my GPU, network card and FC card. That's 1 16x and 2 8x. Minimum. Plus I want to invest in PCI-E based flash, so that's even more PCI-E (Probably just M.2 tho).
Like... These things shouldn't be hard. I can understand not having things like a fuckton of sata or even PCIE, but why is it that mobo manufacturers are set on having shitty rear IO? I dont care about VGA or HDMI or DP ports. I have a proper GPU for that, give me USB.

Like, case in point here. Asus Z170-P

It's not exactly a high end board but it's still $200AUD. That's not nothing.
You have 2 PS/2 ports. Why? Use a combo port, put 2 USB ports underneath it. You have a total of 4 USB ports, only 2 of which are USB 3. You have a fuckton of wasted space around the HDMI and USB-C ports. And then you have that VGA and DVI. Why? Just why? There is so much wasted space there, that could just be USB... It's all just so much wasted space and wasted ports. The only ones you'll be using there are USB, Audio and network and at bare minimum probably HDMI. You don't need to waste all that space on VGA, DVI and PS/2. It's all so wasteful and ridiculous.
Almost got this one until I saw the disastrous lack of USB ports. My current board has like 8-10 onboard
Now this... is an IO....

Here's another case.

Gigabyte H170-Gaming 3. A straight up self admitted gaming board. It's better than the Asus. You've got a combo PS/2 port shared with USB. Doing that one right. You've got a decent stack of dedicated USB ports. But then you have the VGA and DVI. On a gaming board. First of all why is it not HDMI and DP? And why is it not HDMI and DP with the two stacked on each other, not wasting space like that lone HDMI port is? and why is there VGA and DVI at all? You could fit like 2x2 USB stacks in that space. Why is everyone terrible?

... Does the voltage regulator heatsink piggyback off the IO shield?

Nothing but networking, USB and Audio. Exactly how it should be.
If I could trust, ASROCk I'd go for their boards. They're fucking insane with IO.
Look at all that... 10 Sataports, 8SAS3, 2eSata, two 3.0 x4 M.2 slots

That SATA is godlike, holy shit.
I have the ASRock M8. It comes preequipped with 6 SATA ports, 4 frontpanel USB, and like 8-9 USBs on the back?
Pretty crazy shit. Love having one hell of a computer packed into such a small case.

I want to know why my gaming board has more than one video output at all. It's not like I'm going to be using it unless something breaks.

I've heard a TON of horror stories about their boards, though. They have the shelf life on a chicken sandwich apparently

Which is why I don't want to spend the money on an ASROCK board. ASUS may have some meh support but their boards are great.
If only EVGA didn't have some amazingly lackluster x99 options.

I can understand why you'd have it in the first place, but wasting it on VGA and DVI? On a gaming board? Get outta here.

Honestly HDMI is much more ubiquitous these days. Like everyone and their grandma has a spare cable tucked away somewhere.
The EVGA X99 Classified doesn't tickle ya fancy?
It looks like a board for tinkerers or overclockers. And it looks cheap honestly.

Exactly. and if you want DVI, pretty much any office supply store or general hardware store like microcenter will have a HDMI/DVI converter.

Molex? What's that for?
Regretting not spending more on my motherboard now, 4 SATA ports is awful. If I want another hard drive I'm going to have to crack all my old games and never buy music because I'm losing the DVD drive.
Also only has 2 USB2 and 4 USB3 on the back, has 4 USB2 and 4 USB3 headers but half the USB ports on my case are broken and only do USB2. I need a new case, one of my harddrives is held in with a single screw because Toshiba are shit at making them and all the threads on it are somehow stripped and fuck me I want toolless.
Monitor is pretty old and I have to use DVI because it doesn't have display port and I don't have an HDMI cable.
But it's got more PCI and PCI-E slots than I know what to do with.
I suspect next upgrade will have a proper board, case that is actually well designed, and some RAID 10. Whenever that is.

Get an external slot loading DVD drive. It's so much nicer.
Molex? What's that for?
Just an optional power connector to give more power for the PCI-E buses and CPU I believe. It's present on my Asus X99 Rampage V as well

I'm more impressed about that chipset HSF lol
I find it hard enough as it is to find 8 port SATA motherboards that are Socket 1151 personally.
I find it hard enough as it is to find 8 port SATA motherboards that are Socket 1151 personally.
I thought it was a limit of that chip type. Like to contain the PCIe lanes.
It would be cool to go from a 1366 system to a brand new 2011v3 system but, like you said, irresponsible amounts of money.
Ugh, I still have a 5870 with my i7 930...
My Sata3 is on a Marvell controller tied through the PCI-E along with another Gigabyte Sata2 controller tied through it as well. Both of which are slower than the Intel controller making them entirely useless. If you actually use them they can cause random stutters under heavy usage. Then you have two USB3's on the back panel but no USB3 front panel headers, triple channel memory which is blocked by many heatsinks and with a slot on mine that died years ago. On top of all this AHCI is achieved through booting into a second BIOS on every boot because fuck it lets just tack on every brand new thing we have on the market.
At least when you spend $300 on a motherboard you get all the most up to date standards and features without them being a last second jam everything we can find into it despite the market not being ready yet and then killing off the socket within a year. I thought spending $299.99 on a motherboard was insane back in 2010 though. It seems like $600 is the new $300 these days, same with video cards.

I went from socket 1366 to socket 1150 a little while back v:v:v
I'll more than likely go with an 1151, but it's fun to think about dropping $$$ on a $1600 processor and a $600 motherboard. :v:

EVGA makes so few options for motherboards.
I'd gladly throw an extra hundred into a build to get their equipment because it just never breaks, the drivers always work, and if something does somehow go wrong, they don't give you any bullshit, but I run into them not having enough options.
actually thinking of getting one of those ebay servers to use as a vm beast at work, y/n?
getting a new one is out of the question totally, and we were planning on building a new server anyway, it's time to move away from physical machines and windows server 2008r2

Ehh EVGA really doesn't have the track record on their motherboards that they do for GPU's and newer PSU's.

But with the DVI and VGA port there wasting so much space I'm going to er on the side of terrible

I should not be allowed to touch computers.
