I can always port it myself v:v:v Not sure why I would need libhybris, though? I thought the latest Atom processors have decent Linux support.
i can't even manage to past boot on ubuntu into an quad-core atom soc (Z3735G)
Holy shit, I just heard China brought UMPCs back. Except this thing probably actually exists.
So what warrants a Core M chip being 10x as expensive as a Atom chip?
iirc Intel actually lost money on every Atom chip in an attempt to get them to have better market share Core Ms have (much) higher margins (but are also far better chips, of course)
Where do you buy them? Even at $330, it's a pretty nice little machine. Especially since you can use it as a mini desktop with a USB hub and an HDMI LCD.
http://www.geekbuying.com/item/GPD-Win-5-5-inch-Game-Console-Intel-Atom-X5-Z8500-Windows-10-OS-4GB-64GB-Gamepad-Quad-Core-2-24GHz-Gorilla-Glass-Screen-1280-720-Type-C---Black-367872.html
since this thread was about tech illiterate people during an internship i had 4-6 years back, it was student helpdesk at a school. basically just helping students with any issues with their pc they had. it sucked one time this girl brings in her laptop. says shit's slow and prone to freezing i open it up, taskbar is loaded with those malware-esq toolbars, i wouldnt have been surprised if bonzi buddy showed up open up ie and the screen is 70% toolbars go to google.com, it all freezes up. ran memtest, turned up nothing. i told her i'd have to reformat the laptop. any data she needs to save has to be copied now, i said, or it'll be lost forever. 'nah its ok' 2 weeks later she comes back to her freshly installed laptop. first thing she cries out when she opened it up was 'WHERE ARE MY PICTURES'
Sounds about normal. I tend to make an image of the hard drive before doing anything like that. Loads of people do this.
I looked up the price from the wikipedia page, Skylake-Y ranges 280-390 USD, Cherry Trail-T ranges 20-40 USD. Its just the processor itself afaik no chipset or other things included. So i thought that price of chip would mainly be like declared by production techonlogies and the size of the die, but the package size is 20 mm × 16.5 mm for CoreM and 17 mm × 17 × 1.0 mm for Atom. And they are both 14nm production technology. [editline]12th August 2016[/editline] Their Atom and Core M lines are on a collision course, like ~2W vs 4.5W, performance difference 30-50% in some cases, meanwhile with a price difference of a factor 10, it seems really crazy.
Prices of the chips themselves are kind of irrelevant since Intel was basically giving Atoms for free to big OEM's to get it market share. Also they aren't on a collision course because Intel announced the Atom line is no more.
Fuck. My GTX 1070 money has to be redirected to fixing someone's bumper in a parking lot collision
Intel announced the Atom line is no more.
good riddance
Atom has no reason to exist if they don't want to go super-low-power, like with the phones. Still hoping for some cheaper Core M chips in the future then, else we're stuck waiting for AMD to do something not-shit to get cheap windows tablets ever again.
iirc Intel actually lost money on every Atom chip in an attempt to get them to have better market share Core Ms have (much) higher margins (but are also far better chips, of course)
This wasn't due to cost of manufacture or anything. This was the fact that the only way Intel got any market share with Atom (Around Bay Trail and up) was they were literally paying manufacturers to take it. They sunk billions. They then merged Atom and PC revenue in their financial reports to cover it up. It is one of the most moronic strategies I have ever seen a company undertake. No vendor actually wanted atom, they should have realised this when they literally had to pay them to take it. The main reason that Core M stuff is so expensive is an artefact of when it was released. It was the first shipping 14nm ASIC, which had terrible yields, but also due to the power profiles they're trying to push which hurt yields any more.
Go to the WiFi settings and set it as metered.
So in theory, I can set all WiFi as metered and Windows Update won't download anything? Forever??? And not update every single frigging time??? :D
So I tried booting into safe mode this morning in Win10. It started to boot, then started installing updates. Not even joking. Then the updates failed and it rebooted into normal windows. :goodjob:
If I bought something like this do you think it would be worth using an iPad mini as a note-taking machine? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01712AITC/ I haven't touched my laptop in weeks and I forgot just how shitty the battery is on it. welp, ordered another stick of ram. gonna rock 16GB for the upcoming years

What I did to keep my shitheap HP for around two more years. They're surprisingly cheap when no-name OEM, and even turned out to have longer battery time than the original when it was new (and i did a fresh windows install)

I can get ~4 hours out of it on lowest brightness. Don't want to get rid of it yet though because it's the i7 model w/ 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, it's still a powerful machine.

It's got a dual core ivy i7, 8gb RAM, and a 256gb mSATA SSD. I really want better battery life and I'd enjoy a better iGPU but I don't know if it's worth the money.
Looks like I'll probably go with my new build after the 1st, but I'm wanting to go with a new case, don't want to build in this disaster of a case, Cosmos 2. Wanted to go with a smaller case, but still need hard drives, especially in my 3x5.25 to 5x3.5 front-bay adapter.

Holy shit Ikea's sign up page is awfully coded. Can someone else verify it's impossible to enter your email address twice? I'm on Chrome and it just isn't working.
I'm taking a CISWEB (HTML coding/web design) class for extra credits and the textbook is seriously the worst formatted textbook I have ever seen. It literally looks like they wrote the book as a website then saved the webpage as a PDF. It looks worse than trying to convert a PDF ebook to ePUB
