A lot of 5 star hotels I've stayed at charges by per article. Washing a t-shirt costs $25, but they'll do a really damn good job washing it for you if you need it done asap.
If you are on a business trip with all expenses covered, including laundry services, then it doesn't matter. If you want to save some money, go to a local coin laundry if there's even one nearby. If not, then go hand wash it in the sink and remember to bring some detergent or something. There's cloth hangers in your hotel for a reason.
Also $25 for a shirt, geez. It better be dry cleaned, folded and smell amazing when I get it (it would be tho).
I gave Rockstor a try. I really want to keep trying it, but it just seems so fucking buggy it's incredible. And it pesters you all the time to set it to the stable update subscription, which is only through paying for support.
I clicked on the Software Updates button and it says it's own clock system doesn't match the format in the system so it fails to check updates. Like this is merely after I install and make a user account. I haven't done anything yet and it's breaking. maybe it's a VM issue but their documentation says it works fine in lots of VM options.
That was just one example, but turning on Samba service gives an error about failing to run a command, same with NFS. Making a new share shows a config file error. making a new pool caused a system error. It's everywhere. This is also my third install.
I wouldn't trust a "pay for this pre-configured distro" distro. What was your problem with Ubuntu again? Try Xubuntu btw, the UI will be much cleaner and more what you're used to.

Well I want to consolidate most of my data into a separate machine which will then run cloud backups on it. I want to move my workstation to all Flash and migrate all HD's to another space.
I'd go FreeNAS, but the expansion methods aren't really practical for me. Like, getting a bunch of 2-3TB drives to make an initial RAIDZ2, then expanding each one to fill out the machine. Lots of upfront costs for me. Which is why I originally liked the idea of DrivePool, but the developers basically confirmed the absolutely last thing they do is actually do any sort of checksum on files, and that's only if it finds a duplicate. So they seem to trust the drives will work and won't lie to them. I don't. They do have an ability to use SnapRAID purely for checksum, but it only tells you which files are bad, doesn't do any sort of automatic healing.
Which is where btrfs comes in. I have no need for striping or performance. Just some sort of drive level duplication or redundancy and ability to expand and balance. I've also considered Storage Spaces with a mirror and ReFS, but most people tell me not to bother with it.
All of this is still just research, the first thing I'm doing is upgrading my machine, the server comes later. But I still have a big interest in this and want to do it right. I like the UI of rockstor and visually it makes sense to me. I can make my way around in it. Unfortunately, it's just not working right, right now. A long with that, they have no inbuilt drive monitoring from what I've researched. So you have to do your own checks to make sure the drives are healthy and to remove them when needed. Really big disappointment.

What if you made an ext4 system partition then stuck btrfs on a different storage partition/drive? Linux only needs about 16GB to comfortably on a boot partition if you're not using it as your main computer, and this would allow you to setup your system with default settings then add btrfs later. I would suggest picking lvm, too.
Looked into seeing what she watched and seeing if cord cutting would be a viable option? Pay TV is extortionate going by the UK's example and if you can get all the programmes she desires they could save a bit of money too.
Well, we have some TV everyone has to pay for (BBC works like that too doesn't it?) which solves that one, but there's another TV station (with multiple channels) that might have some issues with their streaming. I'm going to buy some AP's to accommodate the higher speed and provide better signal by the room with the main TV. (has a chromecast)
She did think about trying it out (just keep the TV package alive meanwhile, but not use it for a while), so hope it'll work out :)
Not sure if one should get a media box for it, since always using an app might not be worthwhile in their case.
Yeah, I configured a striped volume (RAID 0) in the partition manager, does it get wiped if I reinstall Windows?
It won't. The new Windows installation should be able to detect the metadata upon booting and mount the dynamic volume again

How is Play Music compared to Spotify in regards to discovering new music? Had this itch for ages telling me to switch from Spotify but I'm not able to fully pull myself over. I figured out how to import my playlists so that hurdle is gone, but what about custom playlists? Spotify has a ton of them, both from Spotify and user made ones. Does Play have something similar?

There is custom playlists and the ability to share them. There is even a subreddit for it https://www.reddit.com/r/allaccessplaylists/
Google Play Music All Access also has a 30, 60 and 90 day trials, you just gotta find it. If anything, you can give it a shot for free for 1-3 months. I'm currently using it and it works. Also it seemed to allow me to apply for the trial again after using it once some years ago.

Nice, apparently I had a 90 day trial unused from my Nexus phone. There doesn't seem to be a lot to choose from when it comes to playlists though. Seems like Google has 8 official playlists for every genre and searching for rock for example gets me only 49 playlists while on Spotify it just keeps loading in more and more the more I scroll. It has all the music I want (think Play has 5 million more songs than Spotify?) but its discovery stuff and user made stuff seems to lack. I don't really listen to my own playlists anymore since I can just search for the type of music I want to listen to and find a playlist. This isn't gonna last long when something as popular as rock only features 49 lists. Searching for genres I enjoy more has only about 10.
I find it hard to believe there's so few user made lists out there. Am I doing something wrong?
Afaik user made lists aren't really found through Google Play itself. They have been pushing the radio feature more than anything. Which isn't all that bad.
There is a subreddit for sharing playlists at www.reddit.com/r/allaccessplaylists which has a few gems.
Though as a whole, GPM seems to be less about the social aspect and more about just being a general purpose jukebox.

the radio format is based more on songs than users
if there's a song you like, use "start radio" on that song (or album, or artist)
I finally pulled the trigger on my 4x4TB FreeNAS build with room for another four drives. Hopefully the refurb enterprise drives aren't complete shit, but I did get an extra one just in case.

Trying out the radio function now, seems to work okay. Didn't really expect much from it as Spotify's own radio function isn't much to brag about, but this seems to work better so far.

Also, that particle visualizer is pretty cool.
Remember that there is the thumbs up and down option, so if you don't like a song, it will likely not play again in the future.

No ECC RAM?
ECC is overrated.
Don't suppose you guys know how to import a Spotify playlist to Play Music in the correct order? I got my playlists added but they were added randomly. So much music I don't listen to anymore is everywhere, I can't even find the ones I currently like due to the ordering
ECC is overrated.
Seeing a new build for ZFS without ECC is odd to see though. Since I see it every day in my general routine.
If you're going to do a new freenas build, why the hell not just get ecc ram? an 8gb dimm is like 15 bucks
Is there an easy way to check if a windows product key is locked to the computer it came with? I have a friend who needs a key, and I have a lot of keys, but I know that not all can just be used on any computer.
edit: maybe I can just create a VM and check each I guess. save state, enter, if it passes reload if not discard the key.
Yeah my post was sarcasm. The chipset and processor both support ECC so you should get some.

I used my 7 OEM key through like 3 complete hardware changes and upgraded it to 10. I'm not sure they are machine locked.

It really depends, there's a few types of windows keys beyond home/pro/etc.. Some of those can only be used by the hardware they come with. Sometimes OEM keys can be reused but in my anecdotal experience that's less common nowadays

Correct, the backplane uses two molex connectors to power the 8 bays.

Eh, I was on the fence about it. I read a few articles and it seemed like the ECC + FreeNAS thing is pretty overblown. Non ECC was like $67 and the ECC started at $109 for 16GB. I was already in the territory of "Fuck this is a lot of money" so I started cutting corners. ECC was the first to go.
