Which I promptly disable because I never use it and it takes up space.
I left mine at the default of system managed and hibernation on and mine combined are only half my RAM (24 GiB)

I thought SSDs had gotten to a point where it would take more than a decade of normal use to wear it down completely?

You're pretty much right on that, but i like to play it safe
Played around a bit more encoding on the server. If I feed ffmpeg a 720p UT422 file (AVI lossless) it can encode to 720p veryfast, main at over 100fps. If I feed it an h264 mp4 file it's more like 50-55. I can actually encode TWO 1080p files at the same time at fast preset and get nearly 50fps on both of them. But one encode still only manages about 55fps. This is some GTA5 footage. So 1080p30 is easily doable on Fast preset. And 720p60 on fast is also doable. Oddly enough Fast is... the fastest preset, veryfast is like 10fps slower.

Basically when you have so many threads to work with, of course you lose some efficiency due to overhead, but also it seems you are limited sometimes by the ability to read the file effectively.
Is there a way to get hold of a Windows license for two computers for cheap?
At work I gotta upgrade two computers to 8.1 or higher (I need to check yet if an XP computer can run 8.1 or 10). First I'm going to install a trial version of 8.1 on the XP machine, then I need to find out where I can get a legit install for not too expensive. I find 135 euros for Windows 10 home for just one machine ridiculously expensive.
PM me and I have some 7 keys you can have. You can upgrade them to 10 still.
When does the upgrade cut off?

I think you sent me one of your keys before but I was a dumb dumb and lost it somehow.

can you do a search on your PM's? I usually would rename the image files incase people lost them but I don't see yours.

At some point I purged my inbox and the one from you didn't survive.
i am smart :downs:
I can spare another if you need it. I had to stop some people because they were up to like 6-7 keys and requesting 2-3 at a time.
Like come on.
If your willing to send one that'd be pretty neato.

Brt is a lovely man.
That would be really great!
One thing I need to know tho is how can I download a installation file of Windows the legitimate way? For me it's quite a gray area yet.
hmmm. We are running a Windows 7 machine at work which still has the product key on its sticker. You reckon I could use that key to install Windows on one of these computers? My biggest concern is the machine running Windows XP, since I've been badgering around for a while to get XP ditched at work.

Downloading an ISO isn't really that big of an issue, you pay for the license. Microsoft also let you download ISO's directly from them for many years. But you can just google Windows 10 USB download and find a tool on their site which will make a USB bootable drive to use.
Also yea, Windows 7 and 8 keys can be used with windows 10 for the next month or so.
And it still works because I used one when installing 10 on the server (Yes, I prefer 10.)
It seems like there is a bottleneck somewhere with my encoding. I can encode 1440p CRF 20 at medium preset at 90FRAMES PER SECOND. But if I scale it to 1920x1080 it sits at 40.
So to help with this, I bid on a used 750 Ti on ebay. I think some sort of GPU will provide some sort of help here as well as letting me test OBS.
Edit nevermind, in a few minutes it sat at 30%, but like 95% usage over all cores interestingly. But it seems I can't encode 1080p or 720p fast enough, it's so annoying.
I don't think ffmpeg has many hardware acceleration capabilities. I'd first try different scaler options (mostly the scaling algorithm).

I was just using -s
But still, it's such a simple operation, I'm sad it kills the performance so much. In terms of GPU, I was thinking ffmpeg might be tapping into some decoding available to it. Some footage seems stuttery when I watch it.
Anyways, it does seem that if my goal is one job at a time, be it 1080p or 720p60 for streaming then this server is not what I want. Selling it might be much better for me. Then I can get like a used E5-2667 v3 or something and an x99 board. From there I can maybe use my current CPU/MOBO/RAM for a streaming system if needed.
Wonder what I could get for this server

Way more than what you bought it for

Check out eBay. They're going for like ~$2,000+

aka sell it and buy something that would be more fitting for your rendering and other uses.
(Yes, I prefer 10 [on a badass server].)
I'll be running a lightweight web server just showing a gif of a burning n9
If I'm cool enough I would just run a freeciv or halo 1 mp server (I'll figure it out somehow)
I'll probably run some domain redirecter
Check out eBay. They're going for like ~$2,000+
I might grab two used SAS drives and put it in there before selling it. Make it more complete and might be more valuable to a buyer.
Edit: I guess it'll be a local thing, shipping would be awful on it.
Why not just have enough RAM? Either way I'm hitting a hard barrier.
Hibernation is another enormous file, which I also disable, particularly on desktops. Shut it off, or go to sleep. Hibernation is stupid for all but a handful of specific uses.
Some programs will bitch about running out of memory regardless, and Windows will too if the page file isn't present. It probably has something to do with the way the kernel allocates memory but I don't really care enough. 4 GB so trivial I don't fret about it.
That project Scorpio tho
Betting it's a Zen/Polaris APU
Betting it's a Zen/Polaris APU
Polaris probably, but I'm not sure about Zen. That's a much bigger change, not sure they'd go for that.

I'll be running a bot ordering N9s on eBay and shipping them to landfills.

Well Lisa said Zen is done and ready to be pushed to market last I heard.
Wouldn't surprise me if they went for a combo for the Scorpio
