I haven't changed the paste on my i5 2400 in over four years, I probably should do it.
Same here - I decided to dust off my computer, and then I kinda thought that I might as well.
Picked up two brand new ASUS ROG G20AJ desktops today, both i5 4660s with GTX960s, 8GB of ram, 2TB HDDs. £220 each. I'm a happy bunny today. (Insight had a price F' up, they shipped :o)
I'm jealous even though I'd have no use for two more computers.
What's a good relatively-low cost server host if I just wanna host some games and use an FTP every so often? Preferably a VM server because I'll probably want either Windows or Linux depending on what I'm doing. I could host it at home but my upload speed is only 4 Mb/s and there's no way that's gonna work well for things like Fivem.
4 megabytes per second what are you worried about!
Yeah, that's better than most people's download speed. I'm happy that I get 1 MB/s up.
4 megabytes per second what are you worried about!
It's awfully slow for FTP stuff when I'm just trying to quickly get a large file to a friend >.< [editline]6th July 2016[/editline] Wait I meant megaBITS per second, not megabytes. I get 4Mb/s up. Thanks autocorrect.
Try hosting one on your connection and see how it goes, you may be surprised.

Whatever datashack's name is now have some good prices on decent dedicated hardware. You could probably windows base and spin up a Linux VM on it. Iirc they give you the option between a 100/100 unmetered or gig metered for the same cost and 5 ip's.
I wish I had 4mbps DOWN.
Breaking news: American ISPs suck
Fucking hell yes. Cacti is finally working completely properly for monitoring all our broadcast site routers. [editline]6th July 2016[/editline] That took way too long for comfort.
I'm trying to find time to make a really nice Cacti weathermap of all the backhauls and fiber connections in the network. There's a shitton.
That's what you think, but in reality Windows is waiting for you to leave your computer on overnight doing something important, like video rendering. Waiting. Watching.
I had it install updates when I had Premiere CC open one time. Wasn't rendering but still. Re-opening that project takes foreverrr
I'm surprised a lot of people keep their computers running 24/7. I have to pay an electricity bill, and my computer is already on enough time.
I'm surprised a lot of people keep their computers running 24/7. Right now much of the reason I leave my PC on is to keep backups churning. If I had low power fileserver doing the backups I could throw my machine in sleep or something. But since I push 100GB to ACD backups a day, overnight makes up a decent portion.

At $0.16/kWh that's only $7 a month. Low enough for the convenience(for me at least) to be worth it. Also gives me remote access when I have nothing better to do at work.
I'm kinda on call all the time and I can't be assed to have to boot up my computer when I get a call in the middle of the night and reopen all my programs/websites. [editline]6th July 2016[/editline] Also at my old place I paid $0.063/kWh so it was whatever.
I'd say bad mounting of CPU cooler. Also Doom 3 BFG edition. Why does Dropbox insist on making me add a shared folder to my Dropbox. I just want to download the damn folder and the file contents, not add it to my Dropbox. If the process is, add to my Dropbox, then download, that's stupid. Just stupid. In Google Drive, I have the option to just view the folder and download whatever I want without adding it to my Drive. This is just dumb to begin with.

Insync know the folder is there but just doesn't want to actually sync it despite being checked. [editline]7th July 2016[/editline] Oh it seems clicking each file would let me do it one by one but that's a pain in the arse.
Geez, and you say I play with fire.

Truly incredible. Thank goodness I run dd-wrt.
Yeah, its built to be more of a virtual machine host than a rendering server.
i feel like our new master server is going to be a trainwreck, it has an i7 and like 32gb of ram, and it's supposed to host multiple vm's with windows server on them i don't even know how to begin setting up a hardware raid for that :suicide:

Since you seemed to still be able to download the ZIP via Chrome, then it should have worked with Insync. After opening the link several times, Dropbox actually gave me the option to just view the folder instead of adding it to my Dropbox. The link just wasn't there on the first 5 or so dialog windows telling me to upgrade. Either that or it was not noticeable until after I got annoyed and frustrated by this bs.

If you've an i7 and (as you say) no idea what you're doing, then I'm guessing you don't actually have a hardware RAID controller though, just FakeRAID (which is a terrible idea). So if the hypervisor you're planning to install supports it, use software RAID, if not, you'll either have to buy a controller ($$$) or live without RAID for the hypervisor itself and create disk images on all your drives and set up software RAID inside the virtual machines.
