Alright. Got my build.
i5-2400 runs at around 28c average on all cores, 5850 is 27c. Now lets see how GTA IV runs. :buddy:

Question: Will this fit with an ASUS M3A78 mobo?

That's an AMD motherboard right? Of course an Intel chip won't work.
No it's not got 1155 socket
This is such a step up from my old busted e6600 :D
Render times in maya down from 20 mins to 1,30. and that's rendering at double the resolution!
Longest one was 7 mins, and the temps were stable at 48'c
edit:
Also, overclocked to 4.6ghz on the stock cooler
i5 2500K?
Got my shit from scan, everything apart from processor so I'm hopefully getting that on Tuesday from overclockers.
i5 2500k
8gb DDR3 1600
GTX570
upgrading from
E8400 C2D
4GB DDR2
GTX275
Painful to see it all boxed in the corner unable to be set up as I'll be using the case my current system is in.
Reading all of these makes my computer cry

I can relate. My E6850 is quite sad. I'm already two generations behind.

okay so how about thermal paste? i got some from my friend in a syringe, will post name later. i have never applied paste myself, how much should i use? or should i just pop the cooler on with the attached paste?

Clean both surfaces with rubbing alcohol. Then put on a bead about the size of a grain of rice. More and it'll overflow, less and it wont fill.

It should be a really thin layer just enough to fill the small gaps because of irregularities in the metal. And preferably cover the whole thing.
I think the technique is to put a little bit on, then scrape it out with a credit card or something similar. Maybe do that on both parts and make sure to smear them together until the metal touch? I don't know.

Rubbing alcohol? Aww man, i don't wanna go to the city :saddowns:
It's not strictly necessary but it's good for getting any dust or something that might decrease the efficiency out.
Last time "i" changed processor my friend did it for me, and he used a

to smear out the paste, and it works great as of now, never had any worries with heat..
But this is a brand new board with cpu, shouldn't make a difference, right?
I cleaned my brand new ones with rubbing alchol just for posterity.
Didn't seem to make one speck of difference. They should be clean already.
The cooler with the attached paste should be adequate and is a lot less hassle, just smear it some until the metal touches.
Just use a paper towel or something to clean it off, make a flat layer as thin as possible and scrape it with a plastic card or something. I think I need to redo mine because I've been doing it pretty poorly. My temps are fine, though.
Oh look, what does the counter say about my posting level? :v:
I presume that there's no point on upgr8ing with my Phenom II x4 955?
2600K represent. Also how did you overlook it?
If i'm being honest, I used the auto tool but set a cap of 4.6 :)
Good lil' read on thermal paste:

I've always used the double rice method myself, but might have to change looking at that :S

Even a few months can make a fairly significant change in prices with computers.
