I'm racking up a build for my friend to buy, but I'm a fool when it comes to CPU fans. Any suggestions?
Also what are the best case fan manufacturers or just case fans in general?
These are the potential cases so they need to fit in these and not be too greedy on space. [his choices]:

I believe the Scythe Mugen-2 is known as one of the best, and fits in almost any case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185093

Since the CPU will probably already have some thermal paste pre-applied, is this necessary?

CPUs don't have thermal paste, the heatsink has it pre-applied, but usually it's really shitty. A good thermal paste (like that one) can drop your temps up to about 7 degrees.
usually only the HSF has thermal paste not the cpu
That's what I thought, Yahoo Answers said otherwise, my bad.

It didn't look big from the pictures D:
It can fit in the Antec 300 if you're lucky I heard lol

2 inches bigger and it wouldn't fit in my HAF.
Either a Mugen 2 or a Freezer 7 Pro.The F7P comes with Pre-applied Paste too.
I have the F7P but looking to uprade to a Mugen 2 when i get a case that can hold it.
Get the CNPS9700, great fan, probably one of my best purchases yet.
CPUs don't have thermal paste, usually you would want to read what is on the IHS to see what batch you have, and you would want to apply your thermal paste (if at all).
