How well do windows games run on linux with wine? I'm considering switching to mint from windows for gaming.
varies heavily from my experience. some games won't work at all, some games will work with a few issues, and in some rare instances it'll work just as well or even better than when run natively. https://appdb.winehq.org/ good source with how well certain things run
How well do windows games run on linux with wine? I'm considering switching to mint from windows for gaming.
In addition to the above link, a surprising number of popular games on Steam have Linux support now of days. Some have Linux support as in "we have Linux support, but really untested ;)" on some lesser-popular games, but most work just fine; even the most half-assed ports generally run better native, rather than WINE in my experience.
I'm surprised how well Red Alert 3 and Path of Exile run under Wine. Path of Exile needs some specific configuration and both games don't exactly like multiple screen setups, but while in-game, you barely notice you're using Wine. Too bad Skyrim has unplayable input problems, though. (Or maybe there's some specific configuration needed for that, too?)
is it really not possible to use separate wallpapers for multiple monitors in Gnome? apparently it was possible to work around that using nitrogen and disabling a function in Gnome, but that function was removed some time ago and isn't possible anymore. why would you not add this kind of functionality? only thing I'm able to find that sort of works around this is to stitch two wallpapers together, which is far from ideal [editline]23rd February 2015[/editline] I recall having separate wallpapers before, wonder how I pulled that off
Well, not installing it today, every DVD-R I bought was scratched and my laptop refuses to boot from USB.
How well do windows games run on linux with wine? I'm considering switching to mint from windows for gaming.
If it's in Mint's repos, use "wine-staging" or "wine-compholio" (they're the same thing) instead of just "wine". They have a shitload of patches to fix bugs and regressions that WineHQ won't fix for unknown reasons. [editline]23rd February 2015[/editline] and as a result games tend to behave way better
Does anyone know if it's possible to shove text in a background task? Kinda like $ echo "Hello world" > [PID GOES HERE] Is that even possible?
I'm sure if someone's creative enough with pipes and other programs, it's possible, but I can't think of anything built into any shells
Does anyone know if it's possible to shove text in a background task? Kinda like $ echo "Hello world" > [PID GOES HERE] Is that even possible?
Have you thought about redirecting the text to its PID with file descriptors? You can check in /proc/$(pidof $your_process_here)/fd/. This is just a guess, your mileage may vary and I will not be held responsible for anything you do here. My expriments are not being too fruitful of peeping into a background `yes` job's stdout. But I would probably suggest named pipes/FIFOs. A lot less hacky than checking in /proc.
Ah ha! I've got it! $ (while [ 1 ]; do sleep 1; done) | [name of program] > output_file I was then able to echo text into /proc/[PID]/fd/0, and grab output from the output file I specified. [editline]23rd February 2015[/editline] Hey, using the < operator didn't work for what I wanted to do.
Hey all, I'm trying to run Nvidia's FX composer under WINE. As far as I can tell, it uses .NET 2.0 and visual c++ 2005, and has dx9, dx10, and opengl renderers(which you can also choose to omit during install). Install works, but it crashes on run. I've installed dotnet20, mono210, dx9_43, dx10, and vcrun2005 through PlayOnLinux. But the furthest I've gotten is getting this error:
[02/24/15 09:55:59] - Running wine- FXComposer2.exe (Working directory : /home/william/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/fxcomposer3/drive_c/Program Files/NVIDIA Corporation/FX Composer 2.5) fixme:mscoree:ConfigFileHandler_startElement Unknown element L"appSettings" in state 1 fixme:mscoree:ConfigFileHandler_startElement Unknown element L"add" in state 3 fixme:mscoree:ConfigFileHandler_startElement Unknown element L"add" in state 3 fixme:mscoree:ConfigFileHandler_startElement Unknown element L"add" in state 3 err:mscoree:load_mono Could not load Mono into this process
EDIT: got it working, switched to WINE 1.7.37, had POL install vcrun2005, dx9_43, dx10, mono210, dotnet20, and dotnet20sp2 BEFORE install, this time the windows python installer appeared, and now the program runs.
What should I do to my arch installation. Running enlightenment atm without too many issues. Possibly looking for a different desktop environment, any ideas?
What should I do to my arch installation. Running enlightenment atm without too many issues. Possibly looking for a different desktop environment, any ideas?
Just try some out? I'm using XFCE on my desktop and Awesome WM on my netbook. I feel like tiling doesn't work all that well on my desktop (I mean it works great, but not for me), however non-tiling on a netbook feels awkward. So it all depends on what you like and when and how.
What should I do to my arch installation. Running enlightenment atm without too many issues. Possibly looking for a different desktop environment, any ideas?
CDE. Just like Enlightenment, but older.
CDE. Just like Enlightenment, but older.
and marginally better looking :v: I love Enlightenment, I just wish someone competent would make a nice theme for it.
Lenovo S205 laptop/netbook, Xubuntu or Lubuntu?
Lenovo S205 laptop/netbook, Xubuntu or Lubuntu?
I've heard good things about Ubuntu Mate.
Lenovo S205 laptop/netbook, Xubuntu or Lubuntu?
Xubuntu. Lubuntu should really be reserved for 15 year old dinosaurs at this point.
Xubuntu. Lubuntu should really be reserved for 15 year old dinosaurs at this point.
LXDE is for really REALLY low power systems. Think Raspberry Pi & similar
LXDE is for really REALLY low power systems. Think Raspberry Pi & similar
LXDE is nice, I always liked it better than GNOME 3 or KDE
Gnome 3 is so nice these days. I've combined it with the panel from budgie and its pretty much my ideal desktop
LXDE is for really REALLY low power systems. Think Raspberry Pi & similar
I really like LXDE for pretty much anything that's just a web browsing machine. The only thing I put XFCE on are machines that require a bunch of multitasking as I like XFCE for that a bit more.
been trying to get .webm recording via bash to work for a while now, but I'm not able to get it to work like I want it to.
#!/bin/bash _date=`date +%s` _file="/home/vlad/Videos/Recordings/$_date.webm" eval $(slop) ffmpeg -f x11grab -s "$W"x"$H" -i $DISPLAY -f alsa -i pulse "$_file" scp -P 12345 "$_file" root@81.4.110.159:/home/predme/public_html/videos echo http://pred.me/videos/$_date.webm | xclip -selection clipboard
it works, halfway. it starts recording, but once I cancel the recording and let it upload, it'll get the resolution right but it'll only display a black square. it doesn't record sound either, only picks up my microphone. I'm not terribly used to ffmpeg, nor am I able to find any posts etc which could point me in the right direction. what needs to be changed in my ffmpeg line for this to work?
Are you using ffmpeg from a repository or from git?
Are you using ffmpeg from a repository or from git?
comes from the arch repo
Try adding -vcodec libvpx-vp9 -b:v 1000k
I think you're forgetting to tell ffmpeg exactly which region of the screen to record. The example given on ffmpeg's wiki is:
-f x11grab -i :0.0+100,200
I think "eval $(slop)" provides $X and $Y for you to use, so
-f x11grab -s ${W}x${H} -i :${DISPLAY}+${X},${Y}
Is it vital that you set the screen to record from through an environment variable? Running
echo $DISPLAY
on my end produces ':0', while ffmpeg would need ':0.0'
:0 is the same as :0.0 afaik
Is it vital that you set the screen to record from through an environment variable? Running
echo $DISPLAY
on my end produces ':0', while ffmpeg would need ':0.0'
I think the .0 refers to monitors .0 is monitor 0, .1 would be monitor 1, etc
