I have another problem with linux related to my server. for some super weird reason, java (I think?) has stopped responding for no reason. my dedicated box had 92 days of uptime up until yesterday where I was suddenly left without the ability to execute my Minecraft startup script. I figured, maybe something weird happened to the script? so I tried launching the server by typing the java command straight into the terminal, no response. it hangs for a few seconds, 10 sec or so, then it gives me back control of the terminal. nothing happens, no output and no server starts. then I decided to restart the dedicated box and now it was working again. though today, not even 24 hours later (this box had 92 days uptime with no issues) it has started happening again.
my terminal is full of this from my restart script trying to put it back up, but every time it returns nothing and gives the terminal back

I tried manually starting it once here but no response on that either. if I skip the script and go straight for the java command, same result. it refuses to start and gives me no info on why it doesn't start. whats up here? the box is running the latest Debian 8.

Try including "crc32c xfs" under MODULES in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf. This sounds kinda like a bug that surfaced in Arch a year ago.
For your server, which version of jre are you using? And Oracle or OpenJDK?

mkinitcpio does not exist on Void it appears. I'm not very familiar with dracut, how do I add modules to that? I did read something about crc32c as well but I'm not sure if I found out that it was already there or I was not able to add it.
it's using Oracle's jre. I've done more troubleshooting and I don't think java's to blame but rather the server jar I use, Thermos. I went ahead and sent in an issue on their github, they probably know how to fix this
What do you guys think of Windows' future? I mean there won't be any reason to use Windows if software and especially games migrate to Linux, which will mean hardware support will get much better as well. We just have to polish some non-techie oriented distro and somehow get the ball rolling. Am I overlooking something here?
Do you guys think open-source Linux based OSes (Not including macOS) are going to dominate the desktop market with %80+ share anytime soon? If so then what is your prediction? 10 years? 20? 30? 50?
No, never. I honestly think that it will never gain the ground it needs in the gaming category. Windows will be king for any foreseeable future.
No, never. I honestly think that it will never gain the ground it needs in the gaming category. Windows will be king over some toy OS.
Toy OS? What are you implying there?
Can you give any technical reason why would Windows be a king? What makes it better other than the fact that somehow every developer and user adopted to it?

This is the only reason there needs to be. And the toy OS was meant to be a joke but I forgot for once that I'm not actually posting from a Linux machine. Damn work won't let me switch to it for my main system.

It would be rough transition but it's surely a possibility. It's not far-fetched to think that the next Windows iteration comes with major flaw or more unscrupulous privacy practices and then something like Valve bites the bullet and releases the HL3 for Linux only. I'm pretty sure that would create a great momentum. I mean that's only one scenario of course.
It's a possibly transition but not one that I really see happening.
You just need few people on power with agenda, that's all it would take to push the first domino.
Linux would be great if it could fit my needs.
It would fit all your needs and go beyond if only there was adoption momentum as I said.

But then you'd run into people who need to run Windows for a specific application because Wine doesn't work with it or as well as it should.
That doesn't make sense because there are many Linux and old Windows applications that current Windows can't run. Doesn't mean that it's not the most used OS.
If it becomes a trend to adopt Linux then you wouldn't need to run much Windows applications if any. They'd all be optimized for Linux.
Linux is basically already ready for most people. Do remember that most people just use their computers as a web browser with maybe some office stuff thrown in too. So if linux takes over, I think it will be gradual through things like chromebooks, that eventually lead it to being a platform supported by things like adobe. As torvalds basically said, the reason it hasn't taken over on desktop/laptops is that it's not preinstalled on things.
I wouldn't get your hopes up about replacing windows completely with it personally soon, if you're a gamer or you do shit like autocad. I mainly use Linux nowadays, because I just feel so much more productive under it and I actually enjoy it, but I still keep windows on one computer for muh games.
catch-22
no one adopts linux because not enough developers for it providing services they require
no one develops said services for linux because not enough return on investment
asked about my issues on the void irc and I feel like I should be starstruck, I was helped by one of the Void distro members :scream:
not sure why, but regenning my initram fixed the problem. it did generate fine when I generated it so not sure why it helped to regen it, but it did.
the only thing I kinda don't like so far with Void is that it's missing packages left and right that I'd usually just find on the AUR. it's not a big deal so far, but there has been things not in the repo. it is fun to contribute to the primary repo however, I just applied a patch to the spotify package to grab the latest version (404 up until that) which was merged! I feel like a part of the gang, helping with the repo

refreshing to use something that isn't Arch for once!
having a tiny issue with this so far. my screenshots (created with maim) have the wrong permissions. normally my images will be -rw-r--r--, but on this new install they're -rw-------. access and others should be read which they aren't which makes the images return 403 on my webserver. I have to manually SSH into my box and adjust the permissions which is annoying. whats up with this, can I change the permissions of them prior to taking the image somehow?

imo "ask the irc" should be emphasized a bit more as an avenue for help. Because in my experience they're one of the best resources ever.
I feel like reinstalling void again now, to try to resolve the issues I had with void-packages and git gud at it essentially. Though I'm currently running a pretty nice mageia and argh, I don't have enough hard drives for this stuff.

And none of the players in a significant position to move the market have any incentive to make people switch to Linux.
Microsoft has Windows. Apple has OS X. Google have Android/Chromebooks (and a more conventional desktop Linux would push people away from their services). Who else do you expect to do anything about it and why?
If you are a developer and you already use linux, Most likely you will never leave Linux. Programming on linux feels more natural than on windows, unless you are married to Microsoft and programming .NET stuff.
there are many reasons, the best reason I have is packages. Easy to install programming tools. especially on ArchLinux. other than programming It takes less time to install the same program on Linux than on Windows. the only reason I boot windows every once in a while is some games that won't be coming to linux.
I really don't mind Linux staying in the obscure state it's in now. It's got enough community support that there's plenty of development going on from small teams/individuals, and you can get just about anything done on Linux through the applications available.
Sure it'd be nice to phase out Windows as the king OS, but until Adobe ports its products and schools/universities start adopting it, I don't see that happening any time soon. I'm a programmer and there's no way I'm moving away from Unix-based OS's any time soon, and it's easy enough to boot up a virtual machine with GPU passthrough any time I want to play a Steam game or something. Works for me.
I think most Linux distros also need to continue improving the usability of their distro. Ubuntu is as easy as Windows in a perfect environment, but if something goes wrong you're right back to digging through conf files in /etc/ trying to find out what's wrong. Most people just aren't willing to do that.
Yep, Linux is the ideal OS for me as a network engineer but I'm alright with it in it's current state. Sure it'd be nice, but it's not necessary.
[editline]24th June 2016[/editline]
What really solidified the switch for me was when I realized all my networking tools were just cygwin on the backend.
Do you guys know how to install Blackmagic capture card drivers on Ubuntu?
On my Desktop I stick to Windows because gaming, but for everything else like laptops where I'm not doing any gaming anyway I'm 100% Linux. It's to the point where when I receive a new laptop or whatever I don't bother with Windows at all and just immediately wipe it and install Linux (though I make backup images first.)
Speaking of which, I kicked OpenSUSE Tumbleweed with KDE to the curb on my main laptop and switched back to Xubuntu and I'm already way happier.

I'll be so happy when I can dump dual booting completely on my next desktop. I'm just gonna set up GPU Passthrough and never have to deal with booting into Windows again.
Technically I could set GPU Passthrough up on my current laptop but I already went through all the trouble of getting Bumblebee and Optimus set up so fuck it :v:

They probably will. One of the crazy things about it, is that support can literally be going to their IRC channel and asking the primary maintainers what the problem could be, and they'll even guide you through it even if it requires stracing the shit out of everything.
que
are you asking for information on gpu passthrough?
si
The gist of it is that CPUs with VT-d/AMD-V support can make a GPU available for a virtual machine guest OS. This allows you to reach near-native gaming performance in a Windows virtual machine. The only catch is that you need a GPU for the host OS too, but usually integrated cards work.

Penis, my i5 2500k doesn't support that.
Maybe when it's time to upgrade my CPU I will try to make the jump to Linux full-time.

Skylake does! or at the very least, my 6600k has support for VT-d.
