Arch Linux proved much easier to set up and much more usable than Ubuntu on the Odroid C2 :v:
Couldn't get the Mali drivers to work at all in Ubuntu, and after upgrading the kernel my USB wifi adapter wouldn't work anymore.
On Arch I just installed like two packages and then the Mali drivers were good to go (check the wiki tab for the packages). Hardware-accelerated Chromium is a-go. (I disabled GPU blacklist in Chromium but I don't know if that's actually necessary).
Also, using the mobile youtube site dramatically reduced stuttering on YouTube. On the full site it was almost unwatchable, now it's buttery smooth. Definitely recommend switching the user agent to iPad or something.
If you have or are planning to get an Odroid C2, I'd say don't even bother with the Ubuntu image. It's really not ready yet. Even past the Mali driver issues, it took a lot of time and effort to do a dist-upgrade or even a regular upgrade. I was only able to upgrade all the packages on the system by removing libreoffice-* packages (kept freezing on libreoffice-core for some reason, even if left for >24 hours) and using synaptic. And then I ran into the Mali driver issue anyway. Also, if you're having trouble with getting a video signal or graphical glitches, fiddle with the boot.ini. In particular try changing the BPP mode to 24. If you're using a passive HDMI->DVI adapter, also try a VESA mode and uncommenting "sentenv vout "dvi""
I can finally use this friggin thing. I should have trusted my gut and went with Arch from the beginning.
yeah but there are no Mali drivers.
the thing you refer to as Mali Drivers is infact only EGL Stack libraries with some kernel DRM side. meaning you can run only OpenGL-EL applications and get nice acceleration capabilities. No ability to run OpenGL at all. and you shouldn't use fbdev as your xorg driver. looks like fbturbo is the recommended xorg driver for allwinner chips, maybe it's relevant for odroid too.

The odroid-c2 driver is in fact a Mali X11 driver, not just a framebuffer driver. It's different from fbdev. I wouldn't really say it's ready for prime time yet, though. Chromium can use EGL but performance still isn't great.
I've tried fbturbo as well. I'm probably just gonna switch over to Android though since I don't need this thing to function as a desktop. I'll just have to add the r8188eu driver to it and compile it myself :v:

Android!?, what is the purpose of your odroid-c2?
Android!?, what is the purpose of your odroid-c2?
Just a media center. YouTube, emulators, that kind of thing. If I can't get decent GPU acceleration there's not a big point to me running Linux, as much as I'd like to. I have multiple SD cards, I can just swap 'em when I want Linux.
I'm gonna be five feet away from my Arch laptop and Xubuntu netbook 90% of the time I'm using the thing anyway :v:
So I got the UP boards working, my fault in not doing enough work research on USB power supplies, if it gets to 2.4 amps then it jumps from 5 volts to 12. Got a new power supply, will post here most likely then the server thread because I know jack shit about servers even though it's meant for clustering.
Anyway, is there a good grub tutorial site to learn about editing grub?
I'm having trouble with ubilinux's boot menu where I can't set it to console mode no boot up even after editing the grub script based on instructions meant for vanilla debian.
Why do so many QT apps look like shit in Ubuntu (Unity)??? Can I update QT and improve the looks, or is it bound to the application (looking at qpdfview, among others)...
It looks blocky/W95'ish.
Qt has themes you can change.
I can't speak for Ubuntu's defaults, since I haven't used it in ages, so they might be horrible.
But Canonical's stuff is all based on Qt, so I imagine their defaults should be fine.
Got screenshots?

Sounds like Qt is set to use the "Redmond" theme for some reason.
Did you install some sort of Qt configuration tool recently?
I looked at ExpressVPN and it looked nice, but it's way more expensive than BoxPN and has less simultaneous devices allowed, so I'm just gonna stick with Box :v:
I have NordVPN, and while I liked it very much, it was just too slow for torrenting linux distros. Furthermore, I could never rely on any of their Canada servers on being up at all times; Box's Vancouver server seems to never go down. Might not be a problem for you, though.
Yeah I used expressvpn for my seedbox because it was on a gig connection. Everything else I just use a VPN off my VPS.

There's no way in hell that's stock settings.
Is there a way to ensure the default settings are active? It's possible that I changed something but I don't remember.
Is there a way to ensure the default settings are active? It's possible that I changed something but I don't remember.
Yep, you can just remove all your own settings, but it means you need to know what to remove from the ~/.config directory.
qt has superior theming engine, the problem here is that you don't have a proper default qt theme set.
qt tries to be compatible with gtk based desktops and it does so well according to my knowledge. on the other hand, the current situtation with gtk apps is total mess, you have gtk3, gtk2 which are not compatible to each other unlike qt5 with qt4 that have nice compatability.
i'm going to jump the shark today and install Xubuntu on my brand new laptop. Anything useful I should know ?
i'm going to jump the shark today and install Xubuntu on my brand new laptop. Anything useful I should know ?
Hardware support for new laptops is often a bit shaky. Make sure you find as many stack overflow/reddit threads about linux on your laptop before you go ahead and do anything and make sure you back up your windows install
Things like eMMC storage, touchscreens, certain wifi drivers, etc can be very shakey
Should I go with Ubuntu instead ? I don't mind Unity, I just want something light enought. (32gb disk space)
[editline]20th September 2016[/editline]
Yeah my laptop use eMMC

I did so on an old laptop from 2009/2010, the only issues I dealt with were some devices using proprietary drivers and the webcam not working at all, but for the most part it breathed new life into that laptop.
But as killerteacup said, device drivers for newer laptops is going to be a bit problematic, just make sure you install the newest drivers possible and all OS updates after installing Xubuntu.

Yeah my laptop use eMMC
Using ubuntu or xubuntu won't make much difference. Both are the same distribution, they just have different desktop environments, which is nothing to do with your laptop hardware.
In fact if you're going to use ubuntu at all I would recommend xubuntu as the desktop will be lighter on your computer.
Don't be too worried about eMMC - I actually bought an ASUS last week with 32Gb eMMC and 2Gb RAM and I read a bunch of threads saying that installing it would be problematic but so far I haven't had a single problem except for the touchpad not working during installation. So like I said, just make sure you've read up on any problems your laptop model has had from other people installing linux before you barge down the door
Alright guys thanks for the info

Just checked, the audio card of my laptop is not recognized by Ubuntu. Only solution would be to buy an external audio card. Any other distribution worth installing ? I'm using the laptop for checking my mail / internet and playing small steam games.
What audio card do you have?
update your kernel and alsa packages.
i have a Conexant Audio driver.
Sorry, I have an Asus X206HA.
I'll install Xubuntu and report back.
make sure you don't install Xubuntu 14.04 by mistake, some people at my work place still tend to install 14.04 releases on new hardware.
16.04, i'm good
Alright so everything works perfectly except for the sound driver. I'm going to update everything and then take a look at it. Went from a Win10 that used around 18Gb of my 32Gb of space to a Xubuntu that use only 6Gb.
Only getting hits for the X205TA. ASUS is weird when it comes to this.
In a terminal run lspci | grep Audio
And
lsmod
Post the results and use
tags too.
