Neovim's Vim's future now.
[sp]But ya'll are all silly for not accepting the Holy Editor as blessed by St. Ignucus anyway.[/SP]

Ah yes, the emacs spokesperson is here guys.
[sp]I said I use spacemacs, but I guess that doesn't count[/sp]
Everyone tells me atom is slow which I don't get. Sure, maybe it takes like a second or two longer to startup than vim, but then it works just fine.
My only problem with it is that it's electron so it's harder to make it look like the rest of my desktop but it has power mode which makes up for that 100%.
[sp]I know people make fun of it and I should probably confess my usage of it to a priest but I can't help but use power mode[/sp]
I also use ee for small things that I don't want atom for, like messing with config files. Only problem with ee is that it's from FreeBSD so most distros won't provide it. It's a little bit like nano, and is in the FreeBSD base system in-case you aren't kinky enough to punish yourself with vi.
edit: it's usually packaged as easyedit so might lookup that if interested
When you're used to an editor that starts up instantly regardless of a 400 byte text file or a 40GB text file, then atom is really really slow.
Yeah, opening up fuckhuge log files that aren't being properly truncated because who the fuck knows is super quick with VIM.
What is it with some windows having arbitrary minimum sizes? On Windows I can scale a Chrome window down to 480x800 just fine, but not on Linux (XFCE). However, I can scale Firefox down to 480x800 just fine in either.

none of you understand what slow means until you try working with Android Studio
why does a glorified text editor have so much shit running that it makes my typing lag
Java.

I genuinely don't understand how Android Studio is so fucking slow.
It's like 10 times slower than the rest of Jetbrains' stuff too.

What exactly do you mean?

Maybe it's just XFCE then? I can't scale my chrome window down even remotely that small. Other people have noted it too.
It isn't just Chrome either, the default PDF reader for XFCE also can't go as small as I'd like.

I don't know how small that is, but it's pretty small.

It's also annoying as hell to work in. It just has some weird UI quirks.
Like the way the debugging icons are. 'Step over' looks like stepping into something.
It also shows the 'step over' icon first, then the next one is 'step into'.
But the order of the hotkeys for step over is F8 and step into is F7.
So the order of the hotkeys doesn't match the order of the icons. It's small shit like this that just makes it frustrating, but maybe I'm easy to piss off.
I'm comparing it to Visual Studio which by no means is really fast but the UX design (if we can even say that for an IDE) is arguably better. And also the fact that I'm used to Visual Studio hotkeys is of course just a biased annoyance. "Change your hotkeys" yeah but I can't change the hotkeys if I'm helping a fellow classmate on their computer :D
Visual Studio is honestly the best IDE out there at the moment. Shame it's so Microsoft centric.

For .NET development, anyway.

I don't need an IDE for 90% of the kind of programming I like to do anyway, so :v:
Dunno why, but this just happened to my desktop:
[t]http://i.imgur.com/CgAlSUA.png[/t]
It all started when i've installed latest updates from the official package. Selecting something leaves the rectangle and icons are duplicating when i place it somewhere and panels are not affected by this. This happens with MATE and Cinnamon.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, I am using Antergos 64-bit

I've definitely got a minimum width but I do on windows too.

took a bit of finagling but i managed to get mine pretty small
probably could get it smaller too but i think it's trying to make sure i have room for that tab or something

So this thing is finally pre-orderable. I thought it was really expensive but then I realized what 90's unix workstations were priced at. I hope it succeeds and prices come down, power8 is hella rad and the freedom aspect is great too. I'd be willing to pay like 1000-1500 or so for a board, especially when the gentoo port completes. Might just throw in $10 bux or so next time I get money

I assume Power8 is a descendant of PowerPC?

As a light Windows user looking to get Linux, what should I be looking out for?
As a light Windows user looking to get Linux, what should I be looking out for?
Looking out for as in differences between Linux and Windows, or which distro to use?
If distro, then anything targeting less technical people and also using XFCE or Mate for their Desktop Enviroment.
Personally I'd suggest either Xubuntu (XFCE based), or Ubuntu Mate, although I'd advice you to stick to the LTS releases, since they're generally better supported, unless you have cutting-edge hardware.
I really wanna get back onto Gentoo again. It was so nice how it was basically the true neutral of distros, allowing you to do basically whatever the hell you wanted (e.g. supports any init system, even supports the freeBSD kernel, etc.) without making it difficult and having great support.
I guess I'll have to. I really like runit, and void was really nice but sometimes the small community and little documentation could be confusing. Just gotta remember to do my updates when I have time to.

Doesn't wmutils let you specifically tell a window how big it gets to be? If so why not just order a window to be 1x1

If it doesn't follow window manager hints (aka most things out of the mainstream), you can shrink it as little as possible. Resizing with the mouse in CWM obeys these hints; resizing with a keyboard does not.

Glad to see more people using the wmutils besides us.

It's possible that I could have gotten it smaller by changing my scrollbar and window decorations but that's a lot of effort for such a tiny little window
maybe if it was part of an art project
