giving it a second go, it appears to work now! it's still not optimal though.
I found another way which got me the desired result. it's still not 100% perfect, but I can live with this approach. I made the panel transparent and let there be about 5% clearing for window buttons. now when I maximize a window, it'll appear as if it's part of the panel.

only thing I'm missing with this is that I'm not able to click through the panel to grab the window, nor am I able to dynamically stretch the panel to fit the exit, maximize, etc buttons so there's a permanent gap. doesn't look too good with programs with custom window borders either

Can you offset the panel 1px from the top?
Can you offset the panel 1px from the top?
I can't precisely set the offset, it's done via pulling it and when it's about 5-10px's away from the top, it snaps into place
How do you migrate a currently installed system across different drives that are always in the machine and are mounted at boot? Do you use symbolic links or hard links?
Like certain root folders to a different drive?
If taking the machine offline isn't an issue, I've always booted to a liveCD and dd'd the first drive over, and then expanded the filesystem.
Don't need anything more complex, if the problem is easy.
Is there any easy way to get multiple video cards and monitors running on Linux Mint LTS/Ubuntu with the ATI proprietary drivers? I have a 5870 and a 5440(?) which I have two 1080p monitors on the 5870 and a 1080p TV on the 5440(low pro media center ATI card). I want to run all of the displays at the same time or even just mirror one onto the TV. None of the GUI menus seem to even acknowledge the card/TV either.
I'd love to run newer drivers too or less shit drivers but Garry's Mod doesn't work with any drivers other than the drivers on the repo. I remember how much better the open source drivers were to deal with in regards to displays allowing me to run 3 out of my 5870 before I snapped my HDMI port and installed the ATI drivers.
I'm trying to desperately untether myself from Windows but I can't even watch video on my TV without it.
I just made the switch yesterday to Ubuntu 14.04.2 after having used Windows for 15 years or so. After the first few struggles(I wasn't exactly new to Linux, just haven't used it much yet, the farthest I got was setting up Arch) I'm actually quite happy that I switched, it just feels more fluid to work under Ubuntu.
So far I've setup TeamSpeak3, Minecraft, Steam + Games(CSGO, Robocraft and a few other indie titles) and am amazed by how well they run. Ubuntu even recognized my cheap chinese Xbox 360 wireless receiver, which was one of my first worries since I play a lot of games with the 360 pad. Heck, I even got Unity web player working with Pipelight, compared to back in the time where I set up arch it felt as easy as a breeze.
The only thing that concerns me a bit is the font rendering in Firefox, I've yet to find a solution to that. Changing the hinting/aliasing with the gnome tweak tool doesn't seem to apply to Firefox.

you should check out infinality, it's a project aimed to improve the font rendering in linux

Thanks a lot. I think it was one of the main reasons back in the day why I didn't switched earlier, somehow the font rendering on Arch and Ubuntu looked like ass on my VGA monitor. It isn't as bad on my newer DVI one, but still noticeable.
Edit: Wow, really thanks a lot. Just installed it and even with the default settings, it's totally an improvement.
Edit2: So I just upgraded to 14.10, now I'm eager to try out systemd, but I'm not quite sure if this could break anything, even though I read that you can uninstall it pretty easily.
whats the difference between ubuntu's fsck and windows chkdsk? to my knowledge fsck is just an expanded version of chkdsk but is it recommended for usage on a windows partition or linux only?
I want to check my windows partition for errors however i still want to use the computer and i have ubuntu installed
doing -A means I have to unmount the current Ubuntu partition I think. I tried:
sudo fsck -C -V /dev/sda1
and it just gives me:
fsck from util-linux 2.20.1
fsck: fsck.ntfs: not found
fsck: error 2 while executing fsck.ntfs for /dev/sda1
time to google I guess

sudo apt-get install ntfs-3g

Thanks but I figured out I had to create symbolic links: http://askubuntu.com/questions/86086/fsck-cant-find-fsck-ntfs
yeah I specified my partition and added -C and -V too. Works now.
Been a while since I last installed archlinux.
Surprised that my install command list still worked even after not touching it for an entire year.
Finally purchased new parts with VT-d support. Few more paychecks and a new GPU later, and Windows can live in QEMU forever
After upgrading Ubuntu to 14.10, I had some error notification icon in the systray and I disabled it, however I thought it'd be easy to re-enable. Turns out it isn't(atleast I can't find any settings regarding it) and google only gives me stuff related to apport, which doesn't seem to be it.
It was basically a red error icon and had something along the lines that some system problems where detected(the proprietary nvidia driver didn't install after upgrading, a restart fixed it though). Any tips on how to re-enable it or atleast how it's called would be helpful.
So I have a windows tablet, and I want to put my music on it's SD card.
Is it impossible to connect up the storage from the tablet in linux? I also tried putting the SD in my Canon and using gphoto2 to put files on, but it only works with images?
Any ideas?

Why not insert the SD card into an SD card reader?
systemd. what are you doing. systemd stahp.
% du -hd1 /var/lib/systemd
8.0K /var/lib/systemd/backlight
4.0K /var/lib/systemd/timers
49G /var/lib/systemd/coredump
56K /var/lib/systemd/catalog
49G /var/lib/systemd
Better clean those dumps.

If you really don't want to use a SD card reader, you could can install a SSH server on your tablet and mount the SD card on Linux using sshfs. I do something similar on my Windows PC.

Yeah, my system has nothing like that, not even cd/dvd drive.
I'll buy a usb sdcard reader though.
Is there a way to force steam to set a urgent hint on it's unity launcher icon? Or any other way to get a "unread messages" notification type?
All I could find from google was that it's marked as a feature request... If there isn't a way, I guess I could resolve to using pidgin with the steam plugin.
IS there any good Linux 'news' sites other than http://www.phoronix.com and http://www.webupd8.org ?
Personally I'd prefer something that isn't RMS tier wizardry, but still also not 'Linux for dummies, the news site'
Occasionally more generic tech news sites and Slashdot have some good stuff.

Where's your god now?
Hey, at least the exception in exception handler handler worked.
So, I remembered I had an old 560ti from a few years back, never sold it. Thought to myself, hey, that would make a pretty fucking decent host GPU for my Windows QEMU project.
And it fucking worked. Arch Linux as the host with my 560ti, Windows 8.1 as the guest with my newer 670. Right now I'm trying to get USB sharing working, and VNC so I can more easily show you guys, but fuck this is cool
I'll never have to use Wine again

I'd be super interested to know how you did this. I've been thinking about doing something like this for a long time but have never thought about where to start.
