the GNOME devs removed the ability to be a functional DE from GNOME because they weren't using it, so nobody else should be either
What do you mean by "They removed the ability to be a functional DE"? What did they change recently?
They removed the ability to be a functional joke.
anyone got experience with Crossover by Codeweavers? apparently it's Wine with a GUI + support that costs 60$ for a year. from what I gathered, lots of the Wine guys are on this as well
Haven't used it in ages, but it's a bit more user-friendly than straight Wine (though I find that Wine on its own or with one of the free frontends is Linux-user-friendly enough), and well you have the support.
I had a years worth of free crossover (some promotion), and didn't use it because wine works fine for what I need.
I just use PlayOnLinux if systemwise wine doesn't work.
Anyone up for helping me debug my X11 issues over irc/tox/whatever or something today/tomorrow? [editline]22nd June 2015[/editline] wayland is not a viable solution for me due to compatibility

It was great before I realized I could just install windows with Bootcamp. Their staff was extremely helpful, too. However it should be noted I only ever used Crossover Games. Performance wise I was looking at about a 10-15 FPS drop with the same game comparing OS X to Windows on a MacBook Pro with a C2D T9600 and a 9600m GT.
#! (CrunchBang) is dead. Sooo I went debian sid and took all of the #! config files and whatnot with me, along with openbox. Been working wonderfully. Running Steam and garry's mod better than I have in a while.
https://crunchbangplusplus.org
So apparently with Thunar I can't just use Browse Networks no I have to use command line
tal@kiwiinside:~$ thunar smb://192.168.1.202/files
This works fine but still throws out above error. What the christ :v: [editline]26th June 2015[/editline] Okay what the hell I assumed it was Thunar but it's not. What the heck is going on?
Holy shit I remember having this exact issue years ago back when I used my main pc besides my laptop.
https://crunchbangplusplus.org
So it's Debian Jessie with newer packages?
Got a Xbox 360 controller. Running Archlinux, it was literally plug n' play. Plugged it in, started steam and super meat boy. Works. Even setup mednafen (NES (and others) emulator) and got it working with the controller! Edit: Also got ZSNES working, just had to rebind the controls!

Also Thunar likes to throw such error because it doesn't automatically retry if something goes wonky while establishing initial connection.
So it's Debian Jessie with newer packages?
Wasn't #! always just Debian with lots of customizations and a sleek post-install script?
No I'm not using Gigolo. Should I?
Seems to make Thunar be less of a bitch when accessing windows/samba shares for me.

i need some help with installing steam [t]http://i.cubeupload.com/YRDbut.png[/t]
Anyone know any FOSS alternatives to VNC (tightvnc/x11vnc etc) that use more efficient compressing (h.264 or something like that)? x11vnc (with RealVNC client on mac) becomes practically unusable if there's some heavy animation going on on the screen.
i need some help with installing steam [t]http://i.cubeupload.com/YRDbut.png[/t]
As a workaround, you can comment out lines 248 and 252 (put a # character in the beginning) in ~/.steam/root/bin_steamdeps.py. Steam will of course complain about the dependencies every time it installs/launches, but will continue if you've actually satisfied them. It's probably Canonical being idiots again.

Hi everyone, I think this might be of interest to you. Our new tool – 3D pen that can also solder, burn and cut is now on Kickstarter: [•http://••••••••3DSimoMini•] I would be happy if you could share the idea if you like it, back us or even post your comment here to give us feedback. for so long I've experienced stutter (aka 60Hz) in gnome on my 144hz monitor. turns out if VSync is enabled in nvidia settings, it'll sync to 60hz. just turned it off and woaaah, I had no idea the fix would be so simple
Today I learned pulseaudio has a built in equalizer which is actually handy
Today I learned pulseaudio has a built in equalizer which is actually handy
For music listening its fine, but it stutters when I tried to route Dota 2 audio into it. But why route game audio to an equalizer anyway? My biggest problem with that is in the qpaeq UI, which is that it doesn't come with presets and stretching the window horizontally will increase the amount of frequencies that it can control, but close it and it will return to normal size.
Yeah, I discovered the equalizer has a stutter issue after a messenger app beeped at me and caused the whole thing to explode fortunately pavucontrol lets you choose what programs use what sinks so
I'd love some low-latency audio system like JACK or even ALSA but with the multiapplication shit that PA brought on. PA, but without all the shit latency, would be nice. Then I could finally properly play Rocksmith 2014 on my desktop PC, considering the game runs fine, detects the cable, and everything, but has a noticeable delay.

What would you recommend as the MOST accessible and foolproof linux distro, I suppose something -buntu based so there's some amount of package support? I need something for grandpa and mind me, he had windows and just couldn't really handle them well (mainly keeps filling them with viruses and malware which is the main reason why linux should be somewhat better) I am fairly sure that he pretty much all he needs is a browser, skype, maybe a text editor and that's pretty much it. I will be able to do some maintenance via SSH but sadly won't be able to do much hands-on help as I will be leaving his living place in a week, we live thousand kilometers apart normally. [editline]5th July 2015[/editline] To be clear, he asked me to help him try it, this isn't me trying to force Open Software on elderly people.
