My ubuntu install is already fucking shit up, what the hell did I do? All I installed was xfce, deadbeef, and chromium.
After finally getting the right wireless driver, fixing janky default touchpad drivers and mending the god awful default fan control settings. This ancient 2008 MacBook is running Arch Linux. I haven't turned this thing on in 3 years so it's good to get some use out of it now. Shame the battery is totally shot and I have to get a new one.
I took for granted how easy Arch is to install when all your hardware is supported out of the box. I'm actually amazed of how far linux has come, pretty much most shit is supported without any tinkering.
Tomorrow I might learn how to use a WM.

I get an error or two on boot, and the network manager applet doesn't autostart.

Strange he didn't see the value in his own distro, vanilla Debian isn't that great
rip until fork

That's just the notification though. I'm straight up missing any networking information unless I run that command. I came across a few reports of the issue searching it, but no actual fix.
Edit: Like the applet in the panel
-1694 MB RAM?
I'm sure Apple has some fancy way to save RAM usage by actually sending it through a worm hole making the bits negative.
It's an Archey problem, Archey3 fixes it.

Hi,
I use Skype often (I know I should switch to something else but I talk to regular people so I have to use Skype until something else becomes popular) but the Skype client for Linux is absolutely awful.
The Windows client certainly has its share of problems but the much worse Linux client is one of the few remaining things keeping me from making the switch to Linux.
Is there any way to use the Windows Skype client on Linux or at the very least make the Linux client not awful and primitive?
Wine doesn't seem to work for Skype and booting a VM just for one program seems like a huge waste of time/resources.
I prefer the Linux client, all they did to the Windows client was make it look pretty and remove features.
It works just as good as the Windows client if not better.
Both the Windows and Linux Skype clients are absolutely horrible.
If possible, you're best off not bothering with it.

Every Skype client is terrible in it's own way.
Microsoft also announced Skype for Web a couple months ago. So you might not need a client, soonish

I've already got the beta, if you're in you should be able to access via:
https://web.skype.com/main
Still requires a plugin for voice/video calls though :\

ye, but the end goal is web-rtc. they won't say how long that will take tho
you have tox as an alternative, and slack now that they've picked up screenhero. but it's hard convincing people to switch :~(

Skype works relatively well. I don't really see a reason to switch unless you need NSA-proof privacy.
I'm surprised Tox is still a thing, being a /g/ project they normally die pretty fast.

/g/ projects usually die fast because of /g/ constantly starting drama on how bad /g/ projects are.
/g/ projects usually die fast because of /g/ constantly starting drama on how bad /g/ projects are.
In my observations it's normally because /g/ spend more time deciding on a logo and deciding whether the logo looks like a dick than actually programming.
Tox was a decent idea, but the execution sucked and the people behind it were more retarded than the combined retardation of Something Awful, Facepunch, Reddit and North America.

And then there were the people who shouted: "OMG P2P shows ur IP!!1! OMG backdoored insecure!"

It works, but I don't like using it. The UI sucks in general, and on Linux I have to disable certain notifications that I'm not allowed to mute. Group calls are the only thing I still use Skype for, and they're hit or miss. I get dropped sometimes, or get group invites while offline. I have to rejoin calls through the chat UI, in a separate window, rather than through your friends list like every other version of Skype. Sometimes it won't LET me rejoin a call. If I wait an undefined amount of time, the label will switch to "Rejoin", otherwise it just calls everyone in the group... pretty annoying. Oh, and they force you to use PulseAudio now... which I don't use, nor want to use
Yeah, it's not OSS either. If it were something I enjoyed using, that wouldn't be a deal breaker. Slack is actually nice to use, and it has a web UI, which means it looks the same on any computer I use.
These things probably don't bother most people

I put a SSD in my laptop and my Gentoo install is now BLAZINGLY FAST
[editline]7th February 2015[/editline]
This is hilarious because the compile-it-yourself nature of Gentoo has offered practically no performance increases

I'm aware that both are bad. I don't like the Windows client either but in terms of not having an absolutely retarded UI (and an actually-usable quote function, which my friends and I use often), the Windows client is much better.
I'd use something else if I could but I can't so Skype it is.
As far as Pidgin goes, Microsoft removed the ability for 3rd party clients to connect, didn't they?
Well I think I've finally ironed out all the bugs in my Xubuntu install. Only thing is teamspeak won't seem to install. Keeps freezing up during it.

The only bad thing about the Linux client is the stupid ass chat preview when you click on a contact. It slightly shifts the whole list and makes it literally impossible to double click on a contact that isn't already selected.

I was going to ask why your package manager would be freezing when trying to install a simple package, but then I realized that Ubuntu decided that it was too good to have teamspeak in its official repositories.
Maybe I should become a masochist and install Arch on my laptop because Xubuntu has been so problem free (except for Bluetooth audio streaming) that I forgot how to do command line shit.
Goddamn embarrassing that I had to use Google to help me with setting up a small Linux fileserver for testing on my Rpi.
I just spent the whole day configuring i3, learning how it works. So far I'm pretty impressed, I might actually switch from gnome.

Obviously no sane person would have windows laid out like that.
What file manager is that? Looks nicer than nemo.

I think that might be standard Nautilus?
Oh it is too, thanks.
