Can't use my external hardrive

To start off, it worked fine yesterday. So today when I started my computer I simply just can't use my external.
In the my computer screen it looks like this

(lokal disk (j:) is the external) If I try to open it explorer crashes, I've tried searching for it and trying any solutions I've found but nothing.

I pretty much have everything I use on it, so if you can please help.

Edit: Well shit, now windows told me it needs to be formated. Does anyone know a way to fix this without losing all my stuff?
