That's because macs have desktops.

Which is a good thing, breaks up from the usual ugly windows desktops.
...And the ugly Linux ones too. ;)
There seems to be so few options when it comes to customising App desktops though. Infact the only variation I seem to see if wallpaper.
Can macs actually do anything else in this instance?

and mac desktops aren't ugly?
and mac desktops aren't ugly?
No, they're specifically engineered by the same people who custom design Steve Jobs' turtlenecks.
That means they're good.

Note the different dock and theme + scrollbars.

It's possible to customise, as the above post shows. But (gonna sound like a fanboy here) Macs look pretty damn good out of the box.

They're prettier than XP, sure, but the only thing they have over vista and 7 is a more consistent appearance.

Microsoft's icon consistency is such a joke, they have icons in there from windows 95, all the way through the new Windows 7 icons.

Sorry that MS would rather work on compatibility and new features instead of working on icons you see for two seconds every month.

yeah, whats functionality and back compatibility when you've got matching icons.
oh and they match the curtains.

Rated dumb.

Rate me informative.
their compatibility is a joke, or they wouldn't need "XP Mode" as a virtual machine... they should just improve what's already embedded in the OS instead.

XP Mode is needed because keeping extremely old code for running ancient software in a modern OS is counter-productive. They offer enough back compatibility as it is and frankly the fact they're giving you a free copy of XP to remedy that problem is enough reason not to complain.

Or just work on both? Microsoft seems to be doing this: Work on it till it just about works, then leaves it. Apple always works again perfection and seeing how much apple have grown just the last 6 months proves that it matters.
Sure, windows 7 is good, but it has way to many unneeded features and resource hogging eye candy.

Well I gave up on Windows last Autumn, so it's irrelevant to me at this point.

No, complaining about resource hogging eye candy.

I'm sorry if 30 MB of RAM is resource-hogging to you.

You don't seem to get what I'm talking about, blurry glass windows? Windows flip 3d?
It's not necessary, and more than anything it's forcing a design choice onto the user which an UI never should do.
I think that instead of trying to make it look futuristic and cool, they should get their shit together and remake everything instead of half of it.
Take every little piece into though and make a unified look that has been reviewed by both designers, users and people that know what works.

Sounds like he's on a Pentium II with 128MB of RAM. :v:

Neither of which take any resources. An Intel GMA can support them.

We're done making UI changes without you being able to do anything, so we're going to make another UI change to remedy it.
What about Vista/7's UI isn't finished? The icons? Oh deary me they didn't replace all of the old Shell32 icons and instead focused on the UI that everyone gives a shit about. A 16-bit icon? MY EXPERIENCE IS RUINED!

apple is far from perfect. well, maybe they are if your definition of perfection is having nearly complete control over your users. MS does this too, but not to the same degree.

I never said apple is perfect, but they're way closer to being than Microsoft.
A normal user don't understand or appreciate the different design/UI and code choices that has been made for a OS, but I do as I design UI's myself.
I totally understand that it doesn't matter for most of you and I respect that but for me it's very important, whenever I use windows I feel like I'm using an unfinished, bloated piece of software.

alright, I can see that I guess. people have different tastes. I for one feel like the UI tries way too hard to be simple that it doesn't even function.
