If it's been a hog for you it's probably because of the skins you're using. I'm using 5 skins (clock, system monitor, mail count, weather, computer temperatures). I find that skins downloaded from the internet have lots of extra crap. I write my own skins so that they're very minimalistic and don't hog resources.
