(if they're on your desktop background) Right click -> Properties -> Change Icon (under the shortcut tab)
(this is assuming you're on XP/Vista/7, if not, sorry, I don't use any others)

Rght-click, and go to Properties. Click on the icon in the properties window, and browse for an alternate icon. Most picture formats are accepted, but .PNG and .SVG look the best.
