It can take a bit to look through, but the Astronomy Picture of the Day has lots of very high resolution real space pictures. You'll find stuff way bigger than 1920x1080 in there.

In XP you can go onto Microsofts website and download a feature for multiple desktop changes like what is built into Vista. I forget exactly what it is, but I believe it's a powertool addon, or something similar. Just search 'Desktop' on their website, you should find something for it there. About Vista: I haven't a clue.
