Why are you in love with Hitachi drives, they're awful. Get a Seagate or Western Digital instead.
For laptop drives I've honestly found WD Blacks to be your best bet. They're pricey though.
I've been doing some research. The exact model used in the PS4 is a Hitachi. http://pcpartpicker.com/part/hitachi-internal-hard-drive-hts545050a7e380 It's only $50. I have been looking at others within a similar price range. Seagate for $66.50 ($51.93 if I can catch the lower priced NEW one on there.) http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ISKS416/?tag=pcpapi-20 Western Digital for $52 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DSUTWMQ/?tag=pcpapi-20 Those would be sufficiently better than a Hitachi, right? Given the price is almost exactly the same. The only difference is the PS4 Hitachi drive is a 5400 RPM, whereas these two are 7200. And the cache on the Hitachi is 8mb, while the one on the Seagate is 32mb and the Western Digital is a 16mb.
5400 vs 7200 RPM is a massive difference in both throughput and access time. The Seagate will be the best since it has more cache, followed by the Western Digital.
Yeah, if I can get the Seagate for the same price as the WD, I will go with it. I've gotta meet the two guys on Saturday to sell my ocarina, and some Final Fantasy games, but after that I'll have a total of $125. So once I pay for the laptop, I will be halfway there. I've got at least 30+ PS2 games listed on Craigslist. I'm hoping to get enough for one larger than a 500GB if possible. This WD Black only has 16mb cache, but 750gb capacity. For $60. Seems like there are only 16mb cache drives at the 750gb level. At least for Seagate and WD. And unless I go up to about $160 for a 1TB Seagate with 64mb cache, the 32mb one is the only Seagate in that price range. Although there is a 64mb 5400rpm one for a similar price. And the 32mb Hitachi, but those are bad, so I'm not counting it.
Just make sure the laptop is in good condition, there are a lot of problems in newer model laptops that are expensive repairs if they break.
I've got Speccy Portable on a 128mb usb drive to check the specs on it and see about the graphics and stuff. Is there anything I should watch out for on it as being bad? From the way he talks, I believe this laptop would have come out in early 2013, since he said it was $900 two years ago when he got it.
It's a bit hard to tell by just a quick look. With speccy when you take a look at the specs it will show you temperatures as well. Make sure nothing is running above say 40Cish at idle.
Yeah, I ran Speccy to check my PC, just to see. It said everything was running good on the Dell. That was one of the things I was going to look at. Make sure it wasn't running hot. I'm going to tell him to have it on when he comes to meet me. So it will have been running for a while, rather than it being cold and just turned on. I figure that'd give me a better estimation of temperature.
One of the most expensive (and ridiculous) problems that can happen on newer laptops are the blower controllers or the blowers themselves going out. Blowers for newer laptops can go for as much as $100. And if the blower controller is shot, you might as well write the thing off because you have to replace the motherboard to fix that. The MSI G series is widely known to have this problem, but I've seen other laptops have this issue as well. Another widespread problem that's been happening for years is the GPU or North Bridge having fractured BGA joints that cause the laptop to stop working entirely. This is partially to do with poor cooling and mostly to do with using solder that isn't flexible enough to deal with the extreme thermal and mechanical stress during normal GPU operation.
