Doesn't really matter if you short the wrong pins, it's not powered up yet :v:

Because IT BOOTS AND SHIT.
still, the psu is still fucked due to earlier happenings, but it boots to windows.
Uh, no. I'm just reposting for the new page.
What's the point in doing so? People don't just go to 5 posts before the end of the page, stop reading, scroll up and go to the next page.
Anyway, sorry for shitting the thread all.
Actually, putting a computer together is just screwing stuff on.
I really hope that my connection sorts itself out by the morning, it seems to be going slower. I doubt that it's a problem here at home, but I guess restarting my modem and router won't hurt.

you screw the motherboard on, that's about it.
unless you have an ancient case that requires screws to hold HDD's in place

Wasn't actually me. That was from the first live test of IPoAC (RFC 1149), back in 2001.
So I just found two computers in the street, again.
2000-2002 era and partly stripped so not much but the most valuable I found was a 20gb seagate hard drive, 2.5ghz pentium 4 and 512mb of *sigh* 200mhz ddr ram.
One was a dell optiplex with a socket 370 celeron sub gigahertz something, don't remember. Second appears to be a custom build with an IBM motherboard with some bulging capacitors, geforce 4, turtle beach sound card and a chassis stripped to its bare frame. Oh and a floppy drive, mustn't forget the floppy drive.
There was also a mystery bag forcibly stuffed inside the custom build, bending the pcb of the geforce 4 to a very uncomfortable degree which contained a disassembled CD drive and a disassembled DVD drive (not burner so no laser fun)
There was also a bag of various sound cables, some of which where marked and considering the sound card on the custom built I suspect this came form someone using it to record instruments, the bag even contained a game port to midi cable.
All in all not bad for taking a late night walk and thinking to bring a flashlight but nothing I'll be using.
My grandmother spilled red wine on her ancient Acer laptop (1.5 GHz Celeron M, 60 GB HDD, 512 MB RAM). It doesn't turn on anymore, so I'm going to Best Buy tomorrow and helping her pick out a laptop. Thinking about it, it's a great time to buy laptops due to the Back to School sales that are going on. It's even easier when her requirements are: Somewhat inexpensive, 15" or larger screen, decent keyboard and somewhat decent built quality. Considering she has a USB mouse and leaves it on her desk, basically anything will do.
why does she want a laptop if she leaves it on her desk? why not just get a desktop or an all in one
why does she want a laptop if she leaves it on her desk? why not just get a desktop or an all in one
probably so she can move with it around the house
anyway i'd get her a thinkpad because those things are durable as fuck and fucking awesome

or an eee pc and a 15' monitor

Holy fuck!
why does she want a laptop if she leaves it on her desk? why not just get a desktop or an all in one
She has a pretty small apartment, so saving space is essential. Since she has very little to do, she wants to get one tomorrow rather than wait a few days to get one online. I'm probably going to look at some of those laptops with the AMD E350 chipsets, since they're low power and inexpensive, yet still pretty fast.
Holy fuck!
See, that's why I always said IP over Avian Carrier was a bad idea. Might've had decent total bandwidth if they standardized on some magnetic, optical or solid-state electronic medium for the pigeon to carry, but NO, they had to standardize on "print a hex dump of the packet onto paper and duct-tape it to the bird's leg. To quote their own RFC: "Avian carriers can provide high delay, low throughput, and low altitude service."
But hey, they've got an IPv6 version, so it's still better than some systems.
What's funny with IPoAC is that I could buy a 100 GB SSD, strap it to the poor thing and it would take less time AND be cheaper than sending 100 GB of data over my current connection :v:
:suicide:
[editline]7th August 2011[/editline]
Just checked the prices for 100 GB SSDs, I thought those things had dropped in price a while ago :byodood:
Let's just say a 1 TB HDD, that's A LOT cheaper.

It wouldn't get off the ground with a hard drive strapped to it. However, it could probably hold a few 32 GB MicroSD cards.

Well, that all depends on its unladen airspeed velocity.

You won't be - you're not being an asshole, you're just generating content.
So about the computers I found, the PSU of one was gutted and probably broken, so I figure I can use the dell optiplex PSU as a power supply for hobby electronics projects, testing fans and LED's and shit like that.
I plug it in and break out my voltmeter, stick it in a molex connector to test the 12v rail and... 8.7 volts.
Are you fucking kidding me? I test the 5v rail, it's at 6 volts.
Maybe this one just doesn't work right when not under any load or maybe there's something I'm missing, but I've tested PSU's with no load before and gotten correct readings, this thing must be broken as hell.
Most PSU's i have have perfect readings without load. The thing has a switch on the back so i just connected the green and a black wire internally so i can power it on with the switch. Kept 2 molex and a floppy connector and now i have some 24v, 17v, 12v, 5v and 3.3v rails :D
It's better than a Silverstone Decathlon 1000W that I found, which fried every compoent I plugged into it. For some reason, the 12v rail was outputting 5v and the 5v rail was outputting a whopping 20v.
