I went to Best Buy with my grandmother and helped her find a laptop. We went with a Toshiba Satellite 670D. It's a great laptop for her with the large screen and the full sized keyboard. It's plenty fast for what she's used to (1.5 GHz Pentium M *shudder*) and was only $486 CAD after HST. I wish it had more than 2 USB ports, though it's just fine for her. After setting everything up (LogMeIn, MSE, LibreOffice, Windows Live Mail and her games), she gave me $30 for my troubles. Not bad for an hour's work.
kinda sucks how you had to get it from bestbuy because that fuels the geek squad douchebaggery but it wasn't really your fault
My grandfather has a "secure" wi-fi. But not by WPA or WEP or anything - it's secure because he lives in the middle of fucking nowhere.
But security through obscurity is a bad thing!
But security through obscurity is a bad thing!
Unless you're a hipster.
Unless you're a hipster.
"You would really love my router! It has the best wireless security protocol. But you've probably never heard of it."
"You would really love my router! It has the best wireless security protocol. But you've probably never heard of it."
IPv6? Fuck that. I'm already on IPv8. It's still pretty underground right now. Plus, it's totally green and all.
kinda sucks how you had to get it from bestbuy because that fuels the geek squad douchebaggery but it wasn't really your fault
The guys there are pretty good, they got the idea that "This group knows what they're looking for" and stayed out of the way until we made our choice. The person ringing us up just asked a few basic question like "Do you need office? Do you have an antivirus? Are you going to need a warranty?" and didn't push anything on us. He informed us that the laptop had a 1 year manufacturer warranty and asked if we wanted a store warranty, though we said no since my grandmother has me to do repairs if necessary. Best Buy is pretty nice in the area, the people working there are knowledgeable enough and since they don't make commission, they're actually helpful. Futureshop on the other hand, is terrible. The people working there make a commission, so you get a lot of the "BUY THIS BIGGASS TV AND I WON'T BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN!" type interactions with the staff, who aren't always helpful. The layout is pretty annoying at our local store, where Best Buy is fairly decent.
the steam chat is just terrible
As much as I hate groups like the Geek Squad (they keep getting re-named at PC World over here for some reason) for not repairing my monitor no matter how many times I told them it was faulty, the actual staff at PC World can be decent guys. While looking for a laptop I asked one of them how the model I was looking at would fare with intensive applications, he knew exactly the kind of things that would show it would work for me. And didn't push a more expensive model on me. But back to this monitor. For the last three years I have had a broken monitor. The display isn't picked up correctly by any computers I have connected it to. Almost like the firmware that reports that information has been wiped and replaced with some generic data. It is a 19" monitor, computers see if as 17", it supports 1440*900, computers think it only supports up to 1024*768. I had to use PowerStrip to fake the data the graphics card receives to get it to work correctly. Sent it in to the Geek Squad or whatever as it was under warranty with them still. They reported no faults. Hauled the bastard over a mates house to see if it worked on a computer that has never used it before. Same errors. Sent it back to them, they returned with without fixing it, and without reassembling it correctly as the bezel wasn't on right at all. Do they hire literal chimpanzees or something? [editline]8th August 2011[/editline]
the steam chat is just terrible
The constant "You have lost connection to the Steam servers" errors me and friends get are the only real issue I have with that.
Well that is nice that not all Best Buy stores are not money fucking grubbers and uneducated, nice thing you did for your grandmother. I wish I had some stories come my way, at least I would have something to share.

I just installed a program on a new mac for the first time wow that was weird having to drag the icon to the applications folder doesn't make any sense
Not to mention the piece of shit voice quality.
Don't use voice chat, so I wouldn't know. Plus didn't they move to the Silk codec earlier in the year? The same one Skype uses?
Don't use voice chat, so I wouldn't know. Plus didn't they move to the Silk codec earlier in the year? The same one Skype uses?
Well Skype is shite
As much as I hate groups like the Geek Squad (they keep getting re-named at PC World over here for some reason)
PC World is still "The Tech Guys", but Carphone Warehouse / Best Buy is Geek Squad. The two basically do the exact same thing
Don't use voice chat, so I wouldn't know. Plus didn't they move to the Silk codec earlier in the year? The same one Skype uses?
Jesus. Silk so much better. I think steam are using a crap-tastic version of Miles at about 16khz maybe 12khz but its low enough to sound so terrible.

I can't remember exactly, but I remember having to drop the frequency a lot for micspamming purposes. Might be 11.5KHz or something.
I just installed a program on a new mac for the first time wow that was weird having to drag the icon to the applications folder doesn't make any sense
umm how does that not make any sense?
Yet Source is at 16Khz, makes no sense. And I think also again you can pump that up using console commands, but i dont think it has any effect. Steam did go up to silk. Says here http://www.google.co.nz/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CCQQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fstore.steampowered.com%2Fnews%2F5100%2F&rct=j&q=frequency%20steam%20voice%20chat&ei=nFhATsO3EIm3rAfwwbDPAQ&usg=AFQjCNEBFCC7f82XeZpkG-JoB4dC9lr81g&cad=rja
umm how does that not make any sense?
because next next ok or emerge package is much simpler and more obvious
or clyde -S package [editline]9th August 2011[/editline] Or any package manager really
umm how does that not make any sense?
Dragging something to a folder usually signifies storing it. It doesn't mean installing it in any other OS I have seen or used. Only Mac OS. That does sound like a really retarded way to install things actually. What if I don't want it in the applications folder?

Would it be a good idea to order some of the parts for my computer on Tigerdirect rather than Newegg? Some of the parts I plan on getting are cheaper at Tigerdirect.
umm how does that not make any sense?
Because it's unconventional. Not one other OS does it like that.
Because it's unconventional. Not one other OS does it like that.
applications go in the applications folder it makes sense
applications go in the applications folder it makes sense
but it doesn't make sense to click and drag anything for an installer. obviously I want to install the program because I'm opening the .dmg
but it doesn't make sense to click and drag anything for an installer. obviously I want to install the program because I'm opening the .dmg
look at me, i scream windows user because if it doesn't have instructions to install an application i can't do it!!!!!!!!
It's kinda stupid of Apple to do such a thing. Usually their UIs seem pretty intuitive. [editline]9th August 2011[/editline] Maybe "opening" a .dmg should open a prompt asking if you want to install or run the program? Thank you. I was just mentioning that it's unconventional and unintuitive to a lot of people and that Apple, according to my experience, commonly makes very intuitive user interfaces.
