I hate dealing with Release and Debug builds though, just makes my usual way of sorting things harder.

Would I see a performance increase in anything by upgrading from 4GB of RAM to 6GB of RAM? I thought I could because RAM is so cheap atm in the UK. DDR3 1333MHz btw. For example would it make extracting zipped files faster?

That was the wrong thread mybad.

Unless unzipping files takes up so much memory you must use pagefile then yes it would be faster but chances are it's not doing that so there would be no performance gain from upgrading

Unless he's doing heavy VM stuff.

That too
4 to 6 gb of RAM would probably decrease performance unless you're getting 2x1 sticks, because you'd lose dual channel
-snip-
Awww shit, turns out the "Introductory course to computers" was a mistake
Oh well there's still programming...
I have two single channel 4GB ram sticks. Would getting a dual channel version change anything?

what did you think it was gonna be about lol
Alright guys, I need a cool name for our network's private network, and the public guest network. And don't wuss out like last time.
I'm thinking 'Peasant Internet' for the Guest network.
Your RAM supports dual channel. Your motherboard probably also supports dual channel, look in your motherboard manual.
Anything else?
Sorry, I might be too picky for a beginner.

A bit late but I'd say CodeBlocks works pretty well. It's up to date and also quite lightweight compared to VS.
I love how we're talking about cars in the steam group. Completely not computer related...

of course a few years from now all cars will have a moderately powered computer in them (raspberry pi and the like are first steps in this direction)

Use OptiFine.
Using Linux also helps

Speaking of Linux, what was that command to get system info in the terminal? (Debian)
Oh, that's pretty cool. I wonder how I've never seen this before.
Situation: at work, have 3 mapped network shares, set to autologin. Domain Password expired, but I run Home Premium so I have a VM where I can logon to the domain. Changed password, but Windows still cached the passwords. I could probably disconnect all 3 network shares and recreate them, but it turns out there's a better way.
Start > Run > control userpasswords2 > tab Advanced > "Manage Passwords".
That opens up dialogue or window that allows you to add, edit and delete stored passwords. And in Windows 7 also allows you to make a backup of it.

uname -a
For resource usage, sudo apt-get install htop and then just run that. You can kill processes through htop as well.
UGH, fucking hate my schools internet, now I have to type this post all over again.
Anyway, the command I'm looking for printed an ASCII logo of the distro you were running and everything. I just can't remember what it was called.
Hate my internet, I think I have noise on my line. need to talk to my provider and see if I can't get it fixed.
