So my ego is wicked inflated today. I was appointed the assistant in my webdesign class just cause I know shit. I barely have to work. EDIT: uhhhh...
Can anyone suggest me a tech blog that isn't biased towards Apple (and not biased against Apple), preferably with a gaming part, like Gizmodo/Kotaku and Engadget/Joystiq.
anandtech doesn't have an apple bias but it's got a pretty weird antec bias [editline]8th September 2011[/editline] it has a corsair bias too but I've got one of those too so I'd say they're in the clear
Should I be worried that Geek Squad is appearing in Sweden? Since I'm looking at some job ads, I found that The Phone House was looking for people for HelpDesk/ITSupport, click link and find that it's about Geek Squad.
Expertise in DOS is a qualification but not expertise in Windows 7 ? Based on their ad, you could make it to Geek Squad without knowing shit about anything but DOS.
I don't see why working at geek squad would be bad. You could make it a better place and actually help people that don't know as much about computers.
I don't see why working at geek squad would be bad. You could make it a better place and actually help people that don't know as much about computers.
Only bad thing I see right now is that I'm still in school and it would take me maybe 3 hours to get there with train everyday. Else I just don't really know what to think about it. I think their bad support goes first when it comes to me. But that I'm basing on tales from this thread with no real experience. So I'm mostly making a biased opinion without experience. So yes, that was actually a bad post. But still a bit worried who they will hire. Hopefully someone that knows their stuff.
First real assignment in Web Design class: "Here's a list of file extensions, define them". Most of it makes sense (".jpg/.jpeg" [he even grouped together the ones that were the same thing with multiple extensions], ".txt", etc). Some of it doesn't fit in with web design but still good to note (".doc" and ".ppt"). Then there were three formats that bugged me: .pcx, .tif/.tiff, and .rm. .rm (RealPlayer) made me internally rage a little, because it's RealPlayer. And PCX and TIFF made me wonder "people still use these?". Also, content from district IT! We finallly got Office '07 on these computers. But they aren't installed correctly: Launching from start menu got me this: "ehhwhatever" thought I. So I went into the Program Files folder and launched EXCEL.EXE directly (I was trying to see if Excel changed the file extension in Office 07). I got this instead:

Edit: Nope, I'm wrong, I was thinking of .xbm/.xpm. .pcx is an old DOS format.
I saw a link to a TIFF, on Facepunch, no less, last week. What are you on about?
OMG OMG OMG OMG! I emailed Valve last night about going to their offices when I am in America. They emailed back and said I can on October 11. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
I saw a link to a TIFF, on Facepunch, no less, last week. What are you on about?
I fucking hate TIFFs.. The US patent office still uses them for patent photos.
And then you saved it as a low quality jpeg. JPEG is dead, long live PNG.
If you're sharing screenshots of games, your desktop and other crap on forums, PNG is massive overkill. In threads with a lot of images (The screenshot thread here for example), people are likely spending a few seconds looking at your picture and then they move on. In this usage, a 90%-ish quality JPEG will still look great with minimal distortion. EDIT: Found at my school: Since the lab's power was turned off, some of the computers had a reset clock. I guess this causes WGA to freak out, since it would be dumb if the PCs with an OEM XP Pro key on the side had a non-genuine copy of Windows on them.
I've just started working on a nice Android app to hold my college timetable, I might flesh it out eventualy with a compass/GPS/Wi-Fi router triangulated directions to a specfic room, it will be a fun little project to get used to Java with. And of course I'm texturing it with the incredibly sexy Holographic UI. The background of the app is set to show whatever the system wallpaper is. Oh god I thought I was safe from the Mac fanboys but it turns out I'm encircled by them :ohdear: "Introduction to coputers" a.k.a. teacher reads Power Point about stuff he doesn't know about. We're on a slide about "Computer security". When the teacher asks a question (that's written on the ppt, no creativity allowed) "What is the best way to have a virus-free computer" Guess what comes out? "just buy a mac lololololol" Dear god. The whole class (teacher included) agreed with him and for once, he actually said something that wasn't written on the screen : "Mac OS has less viruses because it's used on so many devices, the iPhone, iPad, iMac, iPod..." SOMEONE HELP ME
It's okay, my art & design class was the same. You know why they said Mac were awesome? The stupidly reflective glass plate over the screen. "PC's are cheap and shitty and use plastic displays." :suicide: A few of my friends from my old school just looked at me and started giggling. They think I moved classes because the teacher was an utter Macfag and I couldn't stand him :v: [editline]8th September 2011[/editline] Not to mention the retards sat laughing their asses off because the volume up button made a popping noise! my god they were doing it for 4 hours solid.
I don't see why working at geek squad would be bad. You could make it a better place and actually help people that don't know as much about computers.
You really, really can't do that while working for them. going against their operating methods (i.e: informing customers of better solutions) will get you in serious shit if you are caught. Eventually fired if you continue. You cannot deviate from their guidelines, and must offer every service you can within reason for maximum profit. Going by the horror stories I have heard from employees there all over the internet. If you want soul crushing computing hell, work there. Otherwise, just do freelance support and hand them their asses with better customer relations.
my god, is PC World any better?
I'm probably late, but I still feel I should let you all know that if you're a student and if your college/uni provided you with an email address, you can get double the extra space from your referrals on dropbox, and your max extra space goes from 8gb up to 16gb. It says you need a .edu email address, but I used my college email which has a .nl suffix but it still worked! https://www.dropbox.com/edu
None of the schools I've gone to have had an .edu email for students or teachers. Atleast I got Dreamspark and other stuff via Mecenat.
They even give you the option to add your schools email domain to their database soo..
my god, is PC World any better?
Pretty much the same as they are all backed by similar/ the same group. But not selling enough at PC World results in warnings. Higher ups tend to take sales from their underlings for the reason of looking better.
That really does sound shitty, are there any legit computer sale/repair stores around?
They even give you the option to add your schools email domain to their database soo..
Put up my schools adress for review. Hope it goes through. Going to a company owned school isn't so bad after all. Atleast I get the education I want (even if I'm in the last group of people at my program that can get it).
Just did my trial computer studies exam. When you open the exe, it literally says this Student Number: [________] Password: [________] The password is Friday. Why have a password field if you write right under it the bloody password. [editline]9th September 2011[/editline] Also I finished a half hour test in ten minutes. Bitchin!
Phone refusing to charge. I wiggle around the USB connector, keeps disconnecting, probably a broken cable. Take out battery, plug in cable, boot phone, wiggle cable around, it fucking runs like normal. I'm thinking it's the OS being a dick to me again.
I'm being sued for $100,000 :\
