oh my god. I've been using win 8 dev preview in Virtualbox for a bit now. Holy shit what is this tripe, I'm not using a fucking phone. I'm on a fucking desktop.
[editline]14th September 2011[/editline]
In conclusion. Windows is now a mobile OS.
[editline]14th September 2011[/editline]
Who fucking thought it was a good idea to make everything square and replace the start menu with the fucking metro UI?!
And people complain that Microsoft don't change enough.
It will take a little getting used to, but I like it!

How can you live without a Start Menu?
It seems like they're trying to make things shinier and simpler, which is nice. I like the initiative but in doing so they have removed so much fucking functionality, at least leave the option to turn the startmenu on. They have done the thing I dreaded the most. They have gone for fancy over functionality. This is a fucking tablet OS, I would love this on a tablet, I really would it's absolutely awesome for a tablet. But jesus fuck they have destroyed everything which made windows absolutely perfect for A DESKTOP and I guarantee the main functionality windows provided for hundreds of thousands of people. I cannot see a retail store using this. I also bet in removing the start menu they have completely blocked use of so many programs.
I cannot stress this enough
Windows 8 is utter tripe
My laptop is content
It took 50 minutes to boot into Ubuntu running of a flash drive
I seriously waited 20 min, Put it in the locker and went to lunch, and waited some more after coming back
Hit windows key, type in program name, it's how I've been doing it since windows 7 came out, I couldn't care less what the menu which pops up looks like as I just hammer away a word and hit enter.

And when you don't remember the name, but you DO remember the developer? Or you need to access the control panel (or some part of it), but don't remember the name of its executable?
I really don't use a massive collection of programs, I very rarely have that problem.
Besides, once beta comes out you can restore the Aero start menu, right?

Because that's the only way to open programs :downs:
Because that's the only way to open programs :downs:
So you, instead of just opening the menu and clicking "Control Panel", prefer to browse to the Windows folder and look for the Control Panel's executable (or is it in explorer.exe?) and start it from there?
Sure, you can have it as a shortcut on your desktop, or as a pinned application on your task bar, but accessing the desktop is not even nearly as handy and the task bar fills up quickly.
[editline]14th September 2011[/editline]
And if we're talking about some other applications, you still have to browse to the folder if you don't happen to have a shortcut to it somewhere. The start menu is handy, because most installers place shortcuts there automatically, and you can bring it up on top of pretty much any application, instead of minimizing all windows and then clicking on a shortcut.
[editline]14th September 2011[/editline]
And yes, there are keyboard shortcuts for e.g. the control panel, but not for everything. And I still find it better to use the start menu.
Hit windows key, type in program name, it's how I've been doing it since windows 7 came out, I couldn't care less what the menu which pops up looks like as I just hammer away a word and hit enter.
The search is fullscreen now, It's awful. What made that so damn useful in Windows 7 and Vista was you could still see what you were otherwise doing.
[editline]14th September 2011[/editline]
I'm fine with Windows 8 using Metro UI as the primary interface, but taking away the startmenu completely. Holy fuck that's dumb.
[editline]14th September 2011[/editline]
Also the search seems dumber now, you have to search by the application name, not the executable file. So to get Paint you must search paint not mspaint.exe. Nope, this is wrong.
And apparently the bootloader is also dumb, according to horsedrowner it's at first a nice shiny Metro UI, which sounds nice but when you make your selection your whole PC must restart to boot into your selected OS.
Hit windows key, type in program name, it's how I've been doing it since windows 7 came out, I couldn't care less what the menu which pops up looks like as I just hammer away a word and hit enter.
I hated the new start screen before I noticed I could just do whatever I did before (hit start and type).
Except Wifi keeps fucking up for me. After a while, it says it's both disconnected, Wifi turned off, and Limited connected. I can't disconnect because I'm already disconnected. I can't connect because it's turned off (while it's actually turned on). If I turn off wifi, I can't turn it back on again.
The bootloader is pretty nice, except booting into something requires a second reboot.
Other than that, it's pretty cool so far. Can't wait to see the beta.

I really doubt Microsoft would have hidden the control panel deep inside the Windows folder, as it is something you access fairly frequently. I'm pretty sure you're making too much out of a non-issue.
And just wait for the people hanging back on windows 7.
It's like the whole "Windows 7 is shit, XP is better and I'm keeping it bullshit." all over again :v:

Except now it's true.

You can get to the normal control panel by opening the Metro's control panel and scrolling to the bottom and hitting "More options" or something like that, it can also be accessed by Windows Explorer.

I'm reserving judgement untill I get home. My download finished and now I'm at college for 4 hours of web dev.

except vista is shit and 7 is better than xp. That's why we rail on people who do that, not because they're just sticking back. If Metro completely fucks windows up like this, then people will stay back on 7 because it isn't horse shit in a split dick.
[editline]14th September 2011[/editline]
*vista was shit, sorry
[editline]14th September 2011[/editline]
although i'll probably just set it to windows 95 mode and continue to use Launchy to start things

If it is utter shit, it will be staying on my laptop as I assume it will save power better than windows 7

[editline]14th September 2011[/editline]
Oh hey, It works atm!
My monitor is out for delivery!
:smug:
I love my Linux class.
I'm the only one in the class that has actually used Linux before, so there's way too much waste time.
All I have to do tomorrow is go to class, write up a report on how I set up Samba as a primary domain controller and then I have the day off, plus Friday.
Last period today, pulled out Minecraft on my flash drive and got it all working. This surprised me, because on all of the other computers I tried it on didn't have Java installed. Luckily, the ones in the Tech block do. So I fired it up, signed in, started walking around and then suddenly a ton of footstep sounds started playing at the highest volume that the computers could go up to (it was that weird bug where it plays all of the sounds at the same time), got a few odd looks from my tech teacher.

P.S I got out of School at 2:15 today, :toot:

How can you guys call something bad, when it's not even Beta/RC yet?
How can you guys call something bad, when it's not even Beta/RC yet?
We can call it bad because that's what it is, I'm personally not taking this as what the final version will be. I'll judge that when we get to it, I'm mostly saying "Don't keep this bullshit up Microsoft, this is awful.".
However, some things in this version are how they will be in the final and they are complete and utter tripe.
Patch 1.8 released a few hours back.
How can you guys call something bad, when it's not even Beta/RC yet?
because the design is absolutely retarded and it's pretty clear that it's what they're going for
