Based off some other research, a good discrete sound card alone would give me better position sound based simply off the higher quality of the sound. So something like an Asus Xonar DG with dolby headphone is probably what I'm looking for.
And it's like 20 bucks. But 20 bucks isn't expensive enough for me so I'm still looking for a small-ish card with more to it.
Surround headphones are a gimmick
Surround headphones are a gimmick
Most content I listen to is stereo, so a 5.1 headset is a bit redundant, even if it does sound good.

I'm actually on my second pair, and surround headphones are pretty neat - as long as you don't spend more than about 60€ for them, of course.
Started with Zalman Theatre (which were a workout to just have on your head), now on Speedlink Medusa.
(Also keep in mind I haven't had any normal speakers connected to the computer since I started using them so my opinion might be a bit rubbish)

Though anything more than 5.1 for headphones is probably a waste of money
All the music i listen too is stereo. The only thing with 5.1 support (And use) are modern games.
7.1 headphones are a waste of money, 5.1 are a waste if they are double the price of regular headphones.

Who here actually use headphones more than speakers? And why do you do that? I'm kind of interested why you'd choose headphones over speakers.

Somehow steam just started downloading at 5MB/s (Yes byte not bit) while my connection is 1Mb/s (bit) max download.
Proved that ass on yogiverse right

Easily: I don't listen to music, except on rare occasions, since it's too much of a distraction, with perhaps exception of ambient music. My entire library of music consists of just soundtracks that I thought were neat (and those are pretty much just ambient music). And since the vast majority of games support 5.1 out of the box and I do a lot of that, it's not such a hard choice.
More reasons: Using computer at night and not wanting to wake people up, better sound clarity (which is very useful if you're watching an unsubtitled movie) and also listening to incredibly embarrassing songs that I happen to like.
As for download speed, perhaps your ISP has its own steam content servers to save up on international traffic.

Capsule went up to 4.3MB/s too.
Speedtest still says my connection is 1.4Mb/s (With the downloads paused)

Headphones for Skype/Games in Desktop. Speakers for Music on Laptop.
[editline]20th September 2011[/editline]
And like Murkow said, for listening to "embarassing" songs.

Headphones offer better quality/isolation at a much, much lower price than a set of actually fantastic speakers, comfort wise I'd rather use my logitech 5.1 (and when I'm watching a film), but when I want to actually "listen" to music I switch to my headphones like most people do.

I'd rather use my speakers than my headphones for listening to music, since it's better sound than my Siberia V2. Nothing beats good old Speakers from the 80's/90's with a good amplifier.
And Music somehow sounds better to me when you can feel everything vibrate :v:

Too bad subwoofers can be heard within a 20km radius

That's why I love my current headset. My ears grip the soft velvet puffy earmuffs and start merging, having sex with the softness of them, my eardrums then proceed to come out of their slimy hermitages and dance with the soft stringy mesh covering the drivers.
Basically my headset has sex with my ears.

I don't need a subwoofer to make my room vibrate.
My Wharfdale Diamonds are a bit of a bitch for bass, even my brother in the loft can feel the house shake.

Assume you have XB headphones?
Y'know what I hate?
When your friends are using your computer and start reconfiguring everything
Gimp/photoshop is missing half its windows, your games have all the bindings reset, a bunch of stuff is bookmarked in your browser, and there's a bunch of flash decompilers and encrypters sitting on your desktop

Here's a lesson. When you let them use your shit, only allow them to use a fucking browser.

Or just don't let them use your shit.

Or give them a Linux netbook.
Or actually stay with them while they're using your shit.

I remember when my primary school made us do some touch typing thing in the library, I looked at the readme file and found out that ctrl+clicking on the options menu took you to the teachers menu, where you could read people's scores and change what level they're on and stuff :v:
