Dropped off the original monitor at UPS. UPS via email is so useful for this kind of thing.
Not really ignorance, but I just misread the system requirements of Oil Rush and spent $20 on a game I can't play.
So I'm getting a terabyte hard drive that I'll be putting into an old Dell desktop with 2gb Ram and a geforce 8300. I think I'm going to start a simple server for maybe hosting a server for file hosting, or maybe a website. I might also host a multiplayer game server. May I ask what operating system would be good for any of those sorts of things? Also, anyone have some good suggestions on what I should do with the server? (Besides porn.)
Seriously, anyone.
Why the hell are you putting a GPU in a server
Seriously, anyone.
Nix all day every day (I personally use Arch Linux because linux). The only exception you'll have to this is if you plan on running game servers without linux binaries (although I doubt you'll be running anything strenuous on that by the sounds of things that doesn't have linbins) that doesn't run under WINE, in which case Windows Server is the way to go (but I'm not particularly a fan of it for everything except as a game server / file server). As for what to run on it, my home server is currently running: cups: print server transmissiond: torrent seedbox (so I don't have to have my PC on constantly) git-daemon: git version control server nginx: local web server for user-friendly stuff (some stuff needs to be usable by my family) samba: file sharing wot works with windows (got 2.6tb of room, works great for backups) subsonic: music streaming to your phone and stuff (site) - donationware, but worth it. ps3-media-server: DLNA-compliant UPNP streaming that isn't just for the PS3 - works fantastically with my PS3 when it's downstairs for watching all my film rips. That's the basics, but I have some other stuff running (like dhcpd, squeezebox-server, and nagios) that's outside scope.
Why the hell are you putting a GPU in a server
I have a Quatro 4400 in mine :v:
Why the hell are you putting a GPU in a server
Why not? I mean I don't have anything else to put it into, and it won't do any harm will it?
I have an 8400GS in mine, just to offload what little bit of graphical processing there is off the CPU.
My "server" has a GeForce 2 MX, mainly because there's NO integrated graphics. None. I do have a slightly better card, a Radeon X700 (I think - haven't looked in forever) but I don't use it because it draws more power, I don't have actual drivers for either card, and the screen's rarely on anyways.
My server to be will only have a Celeron d. 1.9 GHz single core.

my, uh, "server" has a sort-of-semi-broken 6850 in it. I was going to send it to shadaez but i keep forgetting, currently using it to mine bitcoins in case the market ever explodes again ()
I could never invest in bitcoins. with online currency that people can generate like that, inflation happens quick.
Actually, I might also use my server for VMPI with Valve Batch Compiler.
I could never invest in bitcoins. with online currency that people can generate like that, inflation happens quick.
When I was still into Bitcoin, I read that they "Solved" inflation by making it harder to generate over time.
Actually, I might also use my server for VMPI with Valve Batch Compiler.
Does that still work? I was under the impression that it only works with older versions of Source.
snip
"solved" it's mostly just a personal paranoia, I'm sure bitcoins are fine but I can't bring myself to invest in such a potentially unstable currency.
My computer has been acting odd. When I'm simply browsing the web. My system will stutter for a couple seconds and then freeze completely. Really odd. Only started today.
I have an HP Pavilion 515n (got for free) that I was planning on using as a "server" but nothing shows up on the graphics. I can't tell if it's just integrated graphics taking a shit or if it's not even POSTing. And I don't have a spare graphics card floating around to check.
does it not have a speaker? Pavilions usually have a PC speaker hooked up
hi erryone
hi erryone
Internet back yet?
Well. Back from 2 hours of cable management and cleaning. I had 2 cans of compressed air for the cleaning. I used a whole fucking new can on my PSU and it's still dirty as fuck and half a can on my GPU. But my GPU Idle temp has dropped 10'c. So uh, fuck yeah.
does it not have a speaker? Pavilions usually have a PC speaker hooked up
If it does, it's not doing anything. There's no beeping, no nothing.
Oh After effects... You so silly with ram usage...
Oh After effects... You so silly with ram usage...
Upgrade to 24GB of RAM.
When I move to X79 I may end up moving to 64Gb just for the fuck of it. But that's like a year away. [editline]24th September 2011[/editline] Also Youtube is now actually full HD without force deinterlacing stuff. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nerQ2IPaZPU If you have a 1080p monitor, run this full screen at 1080p. It's a grid of lines moving down one pixel each frame at 30fps. Since you see the pixels without flicker it means that each line of pixels is still present. meaning Youtube is no longer auto-deinterlacing 1080p content. Since 1080p came out youtube's filters would cut out every other line of pixels as if you were uploading 1080i content. This is very exciting for me since my videos now are going to look much better.
http://puu.sh/62dd on my 1080p, seems you're right.
God, that fucks with my eyes.
For comparison check this video that is also 1080p but uploaded early in the year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ne0XDTHD0u0 I wish I did it like the one above but basically the lines move down and when it hits that odd line Youtube assumes it's a field and removes it and then duplicates the others to make it 1080p again. [editline]24th September 2011[/editline]
God, that fucks with my eyes.
Zoom in alittle, if it's not 1:1 it will scale the pixels at odd ratios and create trippy patterns.
