But that's what he was talking about.
Also, this guy apparently has a 'GTX 570 Ti' :v:
My school requires that everyone in high school has a tablet, and the one for this year that they recommend is the Lenovo X220 Tablet. It has a sandy bridge i7(don't know much else about the cpu), 4GB RAM, and an amazing Intel GMA.
After school, one kid was using his laptop, and he was talking with his friends about how it could run pretty much everything. I point out that the computers are complete shit, and his response was that it could run Black Ops.

it isn't "complete shit". strangely enough some computers are not made for l33t g4ym3n, contrary to your apparent beliefs.

Well, I meant complete shit in terms of gaming. As a work computer, it's pretty good, though not for its price.

seems fairly reasonable for a business-class laptop.
I'm not actually sure if the x220 is business-class of course, as the latest thinkpad I own is the t60. Can someone confirm this?
[editline]25th September 2011[/editline]
nevermind, missed this

Now, I don't know much about laptop pricing, but I know that computers and the parts are cheaper in America. How can it be 1.8 thousand? I'm sure that it could be picked up for less than £1k in the UK...
is that even bannable
I've seen people getting bad advice, and it's not always that someone corrects them before OP does something stupid. This is a sub-forum where you're actually handling a lot of money, and some people don't realize that.

I would consider giving obviously harmful advice a form of trolling, which is bannable IIRC.

Not "harmful" advice, simply bad advice. Like putting a shit PSU, WD caviar green as a boot drive, etc., in a build.
Not that it should be a serious bannable offense, but after a few threads where you've given this kind of advice, you should probably get banned for 12 hours to think about not doing it again. It says something in the rules about only giving advice you're 100% certain on, as well.
And to the people giving advice to people in PC building, stop up a second and think about how money you have actually been handling. How many 1000$ have you made people buy? 10? 20? 30? And how many minor builds?
Yeah, it's a fuckload of money, really.

From Paulo Marques <>
Subject Performance disparity, problem found
Hi, all
I have two machines that show very different performance numbers.
After digging a little I found out that the first machine has, in
/proc/cpuinfo:
model name : Intel(R) Celeron(R) M processor 1.00GHz
while the other has:
model name : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
and that seems to be the main difference.
Now the problem is that /proc/cpuinfo is read only. Would it be possible
to make /proc/cpuinfo writable so that I could do:
echo -n "model name : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @
2.40GHz" > /proc/cpuinfo
in the first machine and get a performance similar to the second machine?

Shit guys I just got sooo lucky--
When I was going to install arch linux, I made a new partition, which changed the hard drive to a dynamic disk, and apparently you can't boot other OS's when you do this. When I was installing arch, I discovered this with GRUB fucking up and saying it doesn't recognize the 0x42 filesystem(dynamic). After some research, it was practically impossible to get the disk back to normal w/o formatting, until I found out you could do a hacky fix, by hex editing the hard disks filesystem. What you do is change all of the Section 0 Column 2 0x42s to 0x07(NTFS). I rebooted and surprisingly it worked. Time to install arch.

Thanks, I got the first set and I'm quite happy with them considering the cheap price.
Just had the worse weekend ever, moved into university. First nigth here and it takes around 5 hours to get internet running. You have to install software which checks your computer for viruses and an anti virus, mine failed because I didnt have one of the bloatware anti viruses they recommend, then once you've finally agreed to that it takes about an hour for them to refresh who's passed and then you can access the internet.
Then I had to disable eyefinty to be able to rotate my displays and get them setup, once I did that my computer froze, thinking nothing of it I turn it off and let it run the CHKDisc which for some reason took hours. It then tries to boot into Win7 and fails to do so several times, being able to run safe mode but nothing else, I assume the graphics driver was at fault but I don't know.
Giving up I finally decide to install vista which I luckily brought the disc with me for. Get that done, then realise 1. I didn't backup my main hard drives data (like the only 2 files I don't have on my other drives) 2. I don't have my motherboard's driver disc so can't connect to the internet and have no other computers to download it with.
But then I remembered I had a Linux mint live disc so I boot into that and download the right drivers, finally getting that to work and am now reinstalling all the programs I use and hoping maybe a copy of the files I need have survived on my other raid 0 disc although I think it may have already written over them when I stupidly plugged it back in after installing vista to it's other part.
The two files I'm missing annoyingly are massive spreadsheets I've made for university tuition and another recording my progress at the gym for the past 6 months. The first I can remake but the latter is annoying because I love statistical back records, I suppose this is my warning that I should back up 100% of my stuff not 80%, silly that I have 2 redudant copies of the other stuff just not these two.

Interesting....When I come back to my computer after it having idled for a long time, my graphics card is 37c. Which is 10c lower than idling with monitors on.
