tl;dr version: two very untrustworthy sources claim Windows 8 will run XBox360 games. Everybody immediately creams their pants, not realizing that a) there's no way a 360 emulator will be playable on PCs for a long while, and b) an emulator would not instantly make the games work with mouse/keyboard - you'd still be stuck with a 360 controller.
I copied the Xbox version of Half Life 2 to my modded Xbox's (Original, not 360) hard drive a few hours ago. When it was copying, I noticed the BSP files were being copied straight to the drive. I can probably rename one of the maps I've made, FTP it over and play it on the Xbox. Awesome.

Not to be dumb, but surely you could virtualise the entire platform?
Not to be dumb, but surely you could virtualise the entire platform?
Uh, no. Virtualization doesn't work like that. You can't virtualize a different platform, only code that can execute natively. The 360 uses a PowerPC processor - emulation is the ONLY way.
Edit:
Did some math to figure out how badly a 360 emulator would run on the PC. With an i7 990X, or an i5 2500K, you could expect, at most, 30FPS.
I'm starting up my first VM! (XP) I am so excited!

what did you exit?
I hate seeing my graphics card as one of the shortest on the list, it feels so weak... (6870), but then again, it's all high end cards.
Haha, mine isnt even on the list, it's so low. Suck on that!

you said exited instead of excited
you said exited instead of excited
Oh god, sorry, fixed!
"WHAT THE FUCK GARRY WHY WOULD YOU REMOVE HAR--"
>scroll down, it's got it's own section
"oh."
I forgive Garry for fucking up Emotes now that we have our own section on the homepage.
I just ordered my gaming build from newegg. First computer i'll be building from scratch instead of just modifying my current computer.
I'm  excited but at the same time :suicide: because it arrives on wednesday and i have no desktop till then.
Cool, posting from my XP VM.
You learned how to install a VM, congratulation.
Now we just need VMception
from 7 to 95 (if possible)

So what's the change from an actual Xbox 360, exactly?
So what's the change from an actual Xbox 360, exactly?
Fact: Many (I would say most, but I have no stats) games run at 60FPS on the XBox. Even Call of Duty manages that.
So what's the change from an actual Xbox 360, exactly?
the point is its going to run like shit
you have to emulate a whole processor architecture

Just shows what you can do with a standardized system.
I wonder what would happen if a big company like HP started making standardized PC's. Ya know, proprietary components all round to eliminate redundancy and cost. I know it sounds like I'm speaking heresy because you wouldn't be able to upgrade and stuff but the end result would be cheap computers for the end user, if they do it right and do it simple.
Personally if it was all round about 20% cheaper I wouldn't mind getting one. And it would spawn an interesting community of modders for it.

Proprietary components are usually more expensive than standard. And the main reason consoles are better optimized is because they're easier to optimize for - you know all manner of details about the hardware, so you can push right up to the limit of performance throughout. Along with not having to share the system with a bloated OS, a browser, a dozen preloaded programs and all the little notification apps and drivers that slow you down. Plus, they don't have to retain backwards-compatibility - even a brand-new processor starts up in 16-bit mode, and can take quite some time to switch to 32-bit, then 64-bit mode, for example.
Even Call of Duty manages that.
"EVEN" call of duty? What are you implying?

Yes, Steve Jobs.
Great idea, Steve Jobs.
"EVEN" call of duty? What are you implying?
It's relatively demanding? I dunno just going by the Even in his post.
"EVEN" call of duty? What are you implying?
I was implying (and now outright stating) that Call of Duty sucks.
It's relatively demanding?
No it isn't. Not even close to the other games. Plus, you have no idea how washed down the graphics in the Xbox version is.

Wasn't a good way nor a good time to hint that.
